First Theory
In 2007 by Carey Braswell “The evidence that identifies the parentage of Richard BRASWELL (c. 1723-c. 1800) was a long, frustrating time in coming. It finally turned up in the Mormon family Bible record of one James SMITH (b 8/25/1829 Gibson Co., Tennessee.”
“Background: The Bible belonged to James SMITH (b. 25 August 1829, Gibson Co., Tennessee), s/o Dianah BRASWELL SMITH, who was d/o John BRASWELL, the accepted youngest son of the above Richard and Obedience BRACEWELL. John was b.c. 1770, Anson Co., North Carolina & m. Rebecca PRUITT in Greenville District, South Carolina c.1790. (Cf. 1790 Census). The information in the Bible is in the form of a dairy, written sometime after April 8, 1884 (printing date) when Smith was 55 or older. Smith shared what he knew about his family from memory, the bulk of which was naturally about the SMITHs. It was probably written in Provo, Utah.”
It appears as though Richard Braswell’s father is Valentine BRASWELL (c. 1692-c.1766).[1]
Second Theory
Carey Bracewell wrote a book four years later published in 2011 where he gives a different, updated version: The Ancestry of David Bracewell: Including the Allied Southern Families of Braswell, Brazil, Bay, Price, Passmore, Gage, Prillaman, and Allen Hardcover – June 6, 2011 In The Ancestry of David Bracewell, Carey Bracewell describes the fourteen-generation lineage traced from Edmund Bracewell, who was born in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, c. 1510, to Carey's son, David Bracewell, who was born in Texas in 1964.[2]
Obedience’s husband, Richard BRASWELL is now born instead (c. 1732-c. 1799), his father is Richard BRASWELL (1707 - after. 1755) and his grandfather apparently becomes Valentine Braswell (c.1685 – c. 1766).[3][4][5]

Richard Braswell Jr 1732 husband of Obedience |
It appears as though Obedience’s husband, Richard BRASWELL Jr (1732-1799)’s father is Richard BRASWELL (c 1707-after 1755.). Valentine Braswell has new dates (c. 1685-c. 1766) as well as Obedience’s husband Richard (1732-1799).
Richard b. 1732 and Obedience married in Orange County, North Carolina about 1755.[6]

Eliminated Parents
Richard Bracewell was previously linked to Richard Bracewell (1672-1758) and Eleanor (Bryant) Bracewell (1672-1772) as his parents. There are reasons to question the accuracy of these parent-child relationships as follows:
- There is no record that indicates that Richard and Eleanor Bracewell had two sons named Richard,
- At the time of Richard's birth in 1723 Eleanor Bracewell (b 1672) would have been more than 50 years of age,
- Richard Bracewell (1672-1758) and Eleanor Bracewell (1672-1772) are documented to have married 1728 in Isle of Wight, Virginia, five years after the birth of RIchard (b1723),
- Richard and Eleanor Bracewell would have been about 56 years of age at the time they married. A bit old for starting a family (Although their oldest child, also named Richard, is said to have been born in 1704).
- Sources contained in this bio indicate that the Richard Braswell that married Obedience was the son of a Valentine BRASWELL (c. 1692-c.1766). This source should be validated and a determination made as to whether it refers to this Richard Braswell (Bracewell). [10] See Bracewell-72 for possible parent (dates do not agree (two different sources)).
Disambiguation / Merge Warning!
There are two different Richard Braswells of early Virginia:
- Richard Braswell [this profile] married to Obedience was the son of Richard Bracewell, Jr (II) and Elizabeth Bryant. Warning! Richard Braswell [this profile] has been removed from these parents.
- Richard Braswell (deceased by 1761 Orange, North Carolina) married to Joyce is the son of Valentine Braswell and Jane Pope. His Widow Joyce remarried Aquilla Cavenah and moved to Edgecombe, North Carolina. Warning! This also is wrong!
There is no evidence that Richard Bracewell (1672-1758) and Eleanor Bracewell (1672-1772) are the parents of Richard Bracewell (1723-1772) therefore these parents have been de-linked. Do not re-add these individuals (or others) as parents without providing reliable sources in support of the parent-child relationship.
