The Petition of Mrs. Syrena Guest
Referred to Judiciary Committee, 13th Jany 1845.
To the Honorable the Senate and the House of Representatives of the Repubic of Texas in congress assembled.
The petition of Syrena Hereby complaining would most Respectfully Represent and show unto your Honorable body that petition To Wit on the fifth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty two years petitioner was lawfully married to and in all forms of law became the wife of one Martin Guest, a citizen of the county of Red River, and lived with the said Martin at his domicile as such lawful wife for the space of about eight months when the treatment lf the said Martin to your petitioner became so outrageous and inhuman beyond forebearance, so much so that your petitioner was compelled to depart from the Residence of the said Martin, and seek refuge at the domicile of her aged mother[?] upon whose charity alone she is now dependent for subsistence. That since the departure of your petitioner from the residence of the said Martin she has become the natural parent of a legitimate son of the said Martin by the name of Ephraim Alexander Guest, about three or four months of age.Now therefore, may it please your Honorable body to pass some act as To Wit [a] Resolution giving your petitioner the sole control of the said son Ephraim Alexander, legitimate [son] of the said Martin and your petitioner until he shall arrive to full age of Twenty one years, and as in duty bound will ever pray.

The undersigned citizens of the Republic and county aforesaid Recommend to your honorable body the Petition of the within named Syrena Guest to be considered by your honorable body and that the prayer of the petitioner may be granted and as in will ever pray &c.

Syrena has thought proper to squander the gold [goods?] my deceased wife left Contrary to my will and without my consent, the part that may be at your house, please have sent home & Oblige yours,

We the undersigned certify that we have carefully enquired and compared the above and foregoing with the original and found the issue [?] to be a true copy of the original letter, as exhibited. Given under our names and seals this the 20th day of November A.D. 1844.

We the undersigned citizens whose names are hereto Subscribed do certify that we have been acquainted with Mrs.Syrena Guest of the County of Red River previous to and since her marriage to one Martin Guest, also the county and Republic aforesaid and from our pro___dgd [?] of and acquaintance with Mrs. Syrena Guest, we pronounce [?] and look upon her as a complete and perfect amiable lady whose honesty, vict__ and and integrity is superior, by no lady within the limits of our acquaintance and ____ing and surely believe that all the charges as charged against her as dishonesty preferred by any person or persons to be maliciously here made and falsely preferred.

Be it remembered that on this the Twentieth day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty four, Personally appeared before me, the undersigned Justice in and for the county and Republic aforesaid, Syrena Guest and being by me for that purpose first duly Sworn, and Subscribed the following affidavit To Wit That Martin Guest, a citizen of the county and Republic aforesaid, my lawful husband, has treated this affiant with intermaucty [?] in diverse Respects. That the said Martin Guest on or about the 15th of August A.D. 1823 unjustly, ____cously, maliciously and falsely accused the affiant of being Guilty of Larceny qs well as other accusations derogatory and ____minible to her Rreputation as per copy of Letter herewith attached and Marked A)
This affiant further states that thre said Martin Guest has heretofore at to wit on or about the year and date aforesaid Barr and so secure the doors of his own Domicile against the affiant, with a servant negro girl there and prevented her from entering unto the house using their whole might and was ___ exposed to the _____ny of the night.
That the said Martin Guest has at other times not per____ me ______ster. In truth this affiant with gross neglect and continued injustice and ingratitude and in every Respect contrary of the usual course of man to his wife.
