Djurgårdsteatern was built on the initiative of actor and theatre manager Abraham de Broen (1759-1804), who had a royal privilege from 1795 for himself and his family as a theatre company, permitted to play on Djurgården. By means of voluntary contributions from well-to-do citizens with an interest in theatre, a yellow "theatre barn" was built near the bridge. Djurgårdsteatern opened in 1801. It was initially a summer theatre and a hub for the travelling theatre companies that toured Sweden in the winter season. The old "barn" was dismantled in 1863, to give room for a new building for Djurgårdsteatern. This building, however, burned down after only one active season, in May 1865.[1][2][3]
