Renier Louden and Elizabeth Tindell first declared their intention to get married at the Salem monthly meeting on 24th day of the 2nd month of 1717 (24 Apr 1717 old style). The meeting appointed a committee to look into Renier's intentions. [1]
Renier Louden and Elizabeth Tindell appear before the Salem monthly meeting on 24th day of the 3rd month of 1717 (24 May 1717 old style) to declared for the second time their intention to get married. The committee appointed to look into Renier's intentions reported no obstructions to the proposed marriage and the meeting gives the couple leave to get married. They appoint a committee ensure the the marriage is according to custom and with instruction to report to the next monthly meeting. [2]
The committee to oversee the marriage of Renier Louden and Elizabeth Tindell did not report at the following two monthly meeting (24th day of the 4th month of 1717 (24 Jun 1717 old style)[3] and the 29th day of the 5th month of 1717 (29 Jul 1717 old style)[4]
After three months, on 26th day of the 6th month of 1717, the meeting appoints a committee to investigate why the marriage did not occur with intructions to report the next monthly meeting. [5] At the following monthly meeting, on the 30th day of the 7th month of 1717, the committee reports that they have discussed the matter with both Renier Louden and Elizabeth Tindell and that in their judgement Elizabeth shares most of the blame the collapse of the proposed marriage, they comment that she does not seem to love Renier very much. [6]
One might well have expected this to be the end of the story, but that is not the case, The next three monthly meetings[7][8][9] were quiet, But at the fourth monthly meeting a dispute between Thomas Mason and and Renier Louden over a chest of drawers was reported. A committee as appointed to resolve the dispute and, as instructed, the committee reported at the next monthly meeting. [10]This must have been a chest of drawer that Renier had order from Thomas Mason for his bride to be and when the marriage folded there was no need for the chest of drawers. Unfortunately the digital reproduction of this record is so poor that the details of the resolution remain murky.[11]
