How to Create a Slave Profile
You must have a first name to create a profile. If you do not have a first name (such as someone listed with only an age on a slave schedule), please see How to Document Unnamed Enslaved People.
Example Profile: Lucy Daniel
For documenting enslaved ancestors with at least a first name:
- Choose Add+ in the WikiTree menu and choose "Add a Person."
- In the form that appears, add the first name as given on the source document.
- If a last name is not given, please use the last name of the slave owner named in the document. For more information on naming conventions, please refer to Naming Conventions for Slaves
- If an age is not given, use the date of the document and choose the "before this date" button.
- Choose the gender if known.
- If the birth location is unknown, use the location from the document.
- Add the source citation for the document in the source box.
- Click the "Add New Person" button.
- Click the edit button for the newly created profile.
- Above the == Biography == heading, add the following:
- Category:
- Category: <County, State, Slaves> (use the category picker to find the one you need)
- Below the == Biography == heading, add the following:
- Sticker: African-American Sticker
- Create a new subheading: === Slave Owners ===
- If known, list slave owner(s) beneath the new heading.
- Click the save button.
How to Create a Slave Owner Profile

- Category: <County, State, Slave Owners> (use the category picker to find the one you need)
- Under Biography, enter the heading: === Slaves ===
- List known enslaved people.
- If this person had more than 10 slaves, add the following category above the biography heading
- Add any source citations for slavery documents.
- Click Save.
How to Create Slave Owner Space Pages
This is a more advanced portion of the documentation process. For more detailed information, please see Creating Slave Owner Space Pages
Example Page: Slaves of Ephraim Daniel, North Carolina
- Name the page for the slave owner: <Slaves of Full Name, State> Example: Slaves of Ephraim Daniel, North Carolina
- If the person owned slaves or lived in multiple states, choose the state they first resided in for the title.
- Add the category: above the biography heading.
- Add a description at the top of the page and include a link to the slave owner's profile.
- List the enslaved people with Wiki-ID links. Use * bullet points to list one person per line or # for a numbered list.
- For each slave profile already created, please use the Wiki-Link for their name list. Example: Lucy Daniel
- Add the sources heading ==Sources== with <references/> below it.
- Add citations for any slavery documents below the sources heading.
- Click Save.
Consideration for Descendants of Slave Owners
One of our jobs as a project is to help descendants of slave owners understand why it's important to list slaves on their ancestors' profiles and connect them together. We don't want to make them feel like we are calling them out or shaming them. Please work to keep open communication with the profile managers of the profiles you will be editing, especially if these are profiles you have come across or are working on and that haven't been added to the Heritage Exchange category by the profile manager.
When making edits to profiles you don't manage, please use the "Explain your changes" field 100% of the time. It's a courtesy to the profile manager so they know what change you made without having to hunt for it.
When adding a list of slaves to a profile, please add something similar to this in the comment section of the profile. You can copy/paste the same message, changing the name each time.
- As a member of the US Black Heritage Project, I have added a list of the slaves owned by <insert name> on this profile with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information.
