Location: New Kent County, Virginia
Surnames/tags: Dollard Dillard New_Kent
The following entries are all sourced from:
The vestry book and register of St. Peter's Parish, New Kent and James City Counties, Virginia, 1684-1786. by C. G. Chamberlayne[1]
Some entries are from Vestry meetings (designated by "Vestry" and some are from the registry entries "Register")
The entries are in chronological order. Page numbers for the book are beside the entry.
At the bottom, I have arranged the entries by family groupings.
Dollard/Dollar is the only name that appears in these records. Dillard does not appear. These records do appear to be Dillard records as names were often spelled as they were pronounced.
Dorothy Dillard Hughes was a leading researcher of Dillards in America. She wrote
"David Mossom, rector from 1727-1758 (died 1767), wrote that Hen Collings, minister from 1723-1725 (died 21 Nov. 1725), had the books recopied. This explains why the Register part had "Dollard" and the Vestry Book part had "e" written like "o" with a loop at the top. During the 17th century and later the "e" was usually written like "o" with a loop at the top, as in ordered*.[2]
Hence what was written and copied as Dollard really was Dellard. Genealogists are told that one vowel is often substituted for another. Especially in the South short "e" is often pronounced like short "i."
