The goal of this project is to trace our Downings back as far as possible and find out how we are related. We know Downings came from England, Ireland and Scotland. The goal of this project is to get our Downing lines "back to the boat" by finding the original immigrant ancestors.

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am Cheryl Rothwell. I have two Downings lines. They intermarried just prior to the Civil War. DNA has now shown they share a common ancestor but who that man is has not been definitively proven. One possible candidate is a Scottish prisoner transported in 1651.

Here are some of the tasks that I think need to be done. I'll be working on them, and could use your help.

  • posting your Downing line(s)
  • adding appropriate location tags
  • posting DNA information

Will you join me? Please post a comment here on this page, in G2G using the project tag, or send me a private message. Thanks!

I have one Downing Ancestor, and found a Downing Family Cemetery on private property in Lancaster County, Virginia. I hope this helps someone!

I just adopted a couple of Massachusetts to Connecticut Downings...putting the name study category in, but can't put them in Connecticut because that one isn't created subcategory yet.

My Downing ancestor is Abigail Downing, b 1616 in England and married Richard Montague 1636 (probably in Massachusetts)
