Contents |
Biography
Robert1 Long was born about 1590 (age 45 on 7 July 1635), [1][2] presumably England, only perhaps St Albans, Hertfordshire, or Dunstable, Bedfordshire. His birth location and parentage are unknown or unproven (see Research Notes). Robert Long died in Charlestown, Middlesex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, 9 January 1663/4.[3][4]
Robert married (1) St. Albans Abbey, St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England, 3 (or 5) October 1614, Sarah Taylor.[5][6] She was baptized there 29 May 1595. the daughter of John Taylor and his wife, Margaret Willmote.[7] Sarah was buried in Dunstable, Bedfordshire, 12 December 1631.[8]
He married (2), at England, by 1634 (baptism of child), Elizabeth, whose birth and parentage are unknown or unproven. She was born about 1603 (age 30 on 7 July 1635; about 84 in 1687) and died in Charlestown, 29 May 1687.[9][10]
At the time of his immigration, Robert was an inn-keepter at Dunstable.[11]
Immigration
In 1635, Robert Long and his family emigrated from Dunstable aboard the Defence,[12][13] probably departing London. Anderson (2005) wrote,
[O]n 7 July 1635, 'Robert Longe,' age 45, innholder, 'Eliza[beth] his wife,' age 30, 'x children, Michell' aged 20, 'Sarra,' aged 18, 'Robert,' aged 16, 'Eliza[beth],' age 12, 'Anne,' aged 10, 'Mary,' aged 9, 'Rebecca,' aged 8, 'Jon,' aged 6, 'Zachery,' aged 4, and 'Joshua,' aged '3 quarter,' and 'Luce Mercer,' aged 18, a servant, with a certificate of conformity from two justices of the peace and the minister of Dunstable, Bedfordshire, were enrolled at London as passengers for New England on the Defence,
At Massachusetts Bay Colony
Robert Long and Elizabeth Long were admitted as members of the Charlestown Church on 17 April 1636.[14][15]
He became a freeman on 25 May 1636 in the first sequence of three groups of Charlestown men.[16]
At Charlestown, Robert was both an inn-holder and vintner.[17] As early as 3 September 1635, "Mr Longe is licensed to keep a house of entertainment at Charles Towne for horse & man."[18] Not long after, in 1640, he became licensed to sell wine.[19]
In 1635, Robert Long acquired the "Great House" in Charlestown for £30.[20] According to Hallock P. Long (1926), the property was situated at the foot of Town Hill and was the second building occupied by the First Church of Charlestown. When Robert purchased the property, it was being used as a town hall. He gave it the name, "Three Cranes Inn," but it is often referred to in records as the "Grand Ordinary" or "Grand Taverne."[21] The property remained in the Long family for more than 140 years. On 17 June 1775, with most of downtown Charlestown, the inn was burned to the ground by British troops in the Battle of Bunker Hill.[22][23]
Probate
The will of "Robert Longe of Charlestowne ..., vintner," was dated 10 June [or July] 1658 and proved 16 Feb 1663/4.[24] He named wife, sons Joshua, John, Mikaell, Zechariah, daughter Kempthorne (a widow), Ruth and Deborah, Hannah, Rebeccah Rooe, Sarah Hill, Elizabeth Parker, Anna Converse; also the estate of his grandchild Samuel Longe.[25] See Robert Long 1658 Will.
