Biography
His birth and parentage are unknown or unproven. Before associating John Lovett with parents or siblings, please collaborate in profile comments or G2G. See Research Notes.
John Lovett was born, probably England, about 1610 (age at death). John Lovett died, probably at Mackerel Cove in Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, on or after 8 November 1686 (date of will),[1] though the town record reads,[2] "John Louett senior Departed this Life on the fifth Day of November being aged aboute seauenty six years Anno : Do : 1686."
John probably married (1), before about 1638 (birth of child), to a wife whose name is unknown.
John Lovett married (2), presumably Massachusetts Bay, perhaps by about 1641 (he was of Mackerel Cove) and certainly by about 1645 (birth of child), Mary _____, whose birth and parentage are unknown or unproven. She was born, probably England, about 1623 (aged about 50 in 1673), and died, probably Beverly, sometime after 16 December 1686 (made oath regarding late husband's estate).[3] See Research Notes.
Immigration
The details of John Lovett's immigration are not known. Robert Charles Anderson placed John Lovett at Salem (later Beverly) in 1639, saying his origins were unknown.[4][5]

Regarding a writ dated 29 March 1671, "John Lovett, constable of Beverly," similarly, for a writ dated 6 : 4 : 1671, "John Lovet, constable of Beverley," and writ of 15 June 1671, "served by John Lovet, constable of Beverly." In 1673, he ("John Lovit, constable of Beverly") served a writ dated 1 May 1673 in a case of trespass ("for carrying away dung"); he served a venire dated 27 May 1673 ("John Lovett, constable of Beverly"), and a writ on 24 October 1673 ("John Lovet, constable of Beverly); he ("John Lovet, constable of Beverly"). then another venire dated 5 : 9 : 1673, as "John Lovet, constable of Beverly." (Editor notes that his autograph appears on these various documents.)[16]
On 26 December 1673, "John Lovet. Senr" was a witness to the agreement between John and Thomas Patch for the division of their father's estate.[17]
"John Lovet, cooper," was owed 7s from the estate of Richard Kimball; inventory taken 17 June 1676, presented in court, 27 : 4: 1676.[18]
His wife was Mary _____. She was among 20 admitted to the Salem church in 1650, and on 1 : 7 : 1650, baptisms at the church included, "Simon, Joseph & Mary chs of Sister Levett."[19]

Family
John Lovett and his first wife, whose name is not known, were the parents of one child,
- John Lovett [Jr.], born, only possibly Massachusetts Bay Colony, say 1638 (he was about age 32[26] in 1669; about age 40[27] in 1678; about aged 45[28] in 1683; and about age 80[29] in 1714), died at Beverly, 10 September 1727. "aged about nintey one years";[30][31] married Bethiah Rootes.
John and Mary (_____) Lovett were the parents of six children,
- Mary Lovett, born probably Mackerel Cove, then Salem (now Beverly), say about 1645 (assumes she married at age 21 or 22), baptized Salem, 8 : 7 : 1650 [8 September 1650],[32] died, probably Beverly, before 28 March 1707;[33] married, say about 1667 (baptism of two children, July 1668), Thomas Patch.[34]
- Joseph Lovett, born probably Mackerel Cove, then Salem (now Beverly), say 1648 (assumes he was age 25 at marriage), baptized Salem, 8 : 7 : 1650 [8 September 1650], [32] died _______; married, probably Salem, by 1673, Elizabeth Solart.
- Simon Lovett, baptized Salem, 8 : 7 : 1650 [8 September 1650];[32] no further record; not mentioned in his father's will. See Research Notes.
- Bethia Lovett, born probably Mackerel Cove, after 8 September 1650 (baptism of older siblings), baptized Salem, 13 June 1652;[35] died Beverly, before 25 July 1706; (date administration granted on estate of George Standley).[36] married before 18 July 1698, George Standley.[37]
- Abigail Lovett, born probably Mackerel Cove, 20 August 1654,[38] baptized Salem, 18 March 1655;[39] died, probably Mackerel Cove, 27 May 1659.[40]
- Abigail Lovett, born probably Mackerel Cove, after 27 May 1659 (date sister of the same name died); married, probably Beverly, before 1684, Issac Randall, probably born at England, who died of Beverly before 23 April 1684.[41] Abigail probably married (2) about 1686, Thomas Woodbury, and then (3) Thomas Larcum as his second wife. Abigail may be the widow of Thomas Larkum who died Beverly between June and August, 1740.[42]

Last Name at Birth (LNAB). His surname was frequently Lovet, but seen as Louit, Louett, Louet, Luvet, Lovett, Lovat, Levett.
Immigration 1637 aboard True Love not shown. PackRat Pro and Olive Tree Genealogy report the Truelove had sailed to the colonies once in 1633 and twice in 1635, but no departures or arrivals in 1637 are reported.
Birth and Parentage. John Lovet's birth and parentage are unknown or unproven. A prior version of this profile assocated him as the son of Jeames Lovett (bef. 1565 - 1633) and a wife Mary _____ (1573-____), of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England. That association was disputed by WikiTree collaborators and severed in 2021. See also G2Gs (a) ... John Lovett, Sr. and (b) Parents of PGM John Lovett Sr. severed ....
A cluster of Lovet families resided in the Chesham area. See surname births, marriages and burial parish records, compiled by Carole Hammett, "Combs &c. Families of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, England"; web content, USGenNet, citing "Connie Bates' Loventt-Lovittt Genealogy" (links were not recovered when Lovett & Lovitt Genealogy was researched on the WayBack Machine, 2023). Records have not been located by which John Lovet of Salem and Beverly can be shown to have been born at Chesham or associated as the son of a James Lovett.
Not shown a brother of Daniel Lovett. At least two somewhat recent genealogies associate John Lovet as the half brother of Daniel Lovett (PGM), without providing proof or analysis; see Frank Nelson Hall (1965)[43] and Patty Barthell Myers (2003).[44]
Robert Charles Anderson found "no evidence provided for claimed [sibling] relationship" between John Lovett of Salem and Daniel Lovett; see T. Stanton response on G2G, Should John Lovett, Sr. be PGM; he was rec'd at Salem 1639, 21 June 2021, referencing Robert Charles Anderson, The Great Migration Directory: Immigrants to New England, 1620–1640: A Concise Compendium (Boston, Massachusetts : New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2015), 212.
WikiTree reports Daniel Lovett (abt.1608-1692) is the son of Jeames Lovett (bef.1565-bef.1634). There is a baptism at Chesham, Buckinghamshire, 5 June 1608, for "Daniel soonne of James & Jane Lovet hundrich."[45] suggesting the parents were of "hundrich."[46][47]
Wife Mary. She is often confused in family files, see, for example, "Mary Grant (c1605-____), PID LZVG-99T; web content, FamilySearch FamiyTree, assessed as recently as 2023.
Edwin Martin Stone (1843) reported Mary Lovet died "June 1605, aged about 80,"[48] but no supporting historical record has been found. See the related 2023 G2G, Reported death of Mary (_____) Lovett, 1695: Seek historical support for this 1843 claim.
More generally, family accounts report Mary as the mother of all John Lovett's children, but her sworn age (50 in 1673) suggests she was born about 1623 and seems too young to be associated as the mother of John Lovett, Jr., born about 1638. This child, John Lovett, Jr., was not among the children of "Sister Levett" baptized Salem, 1: 7 : 1650.
Children.
- Son John unlikely baptized at Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. A prior version of this profile associated John's son John Lovett with a baptism at Saint Mary, Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, 3 April 1636; however, baptismal records for Saint Mary report a father named John had four or five children[49] baptized there between 1633 and 1640--extending beyond the time PGM John Lovett is known to have been at Salem. The immigrant is unlikely the father of the children baptized St. Mary.
- Son Simon. Frank Nelson Hall (1965) writes, "probably Simon was the Capt. Lovett killed at Black Point in April 1677 in the King Phillip's War ambush."[50]
- Did daughter Abigail (Lovett) Randall marry (2) Thomas Woodbury? Her surname as "Lovett?" appears in some Woodbury baptismal records (see InternetArchive), but that is an annotation by Augustus A. Galloupe. These annotation by Galloupe have often been shown separately to be incorrect. See Errata.See Lovett-Woodbury-Larcum Research.

Daniel Ray. Daniel Ray immigrated 1630 to Plymouth,[51] and removed Salem, 1631.[52] In late 1637, Salem allocated its "marsh & meadow Land ... to the Inhabitants of Salem, proportioned ... according to the heads of their families," based on family size.[53] At that time, Daniel Ray's family included a wife and 2 children (four persons), but the record of the division, reports seven in his household.[54][55] About the seven persons reported in the division record, Anderson writes, "No clues have been found which would help in identifying the remaining three persons," [56]
