Mary (Unknown) Lovett (abt.1615-1695)

Work on G2G

Seeking collaboration on early family of John Lovett (PGM). I'm working off-profile to update his profile. Any assistance you are able to provide is appreciated.

John Lovett was received as an inhabitant of Salem 25 July 1639, and was of Mackerel Cove (later Beverly) on 29 June 1641. He was born about 1610 (age at death).

(1) We currently report one wife, Mary ______, and link her as the mother of all John's children. Our knowldge of Mary, however, suggests she is too young; unlikely the mother of John Lovett, Jr.

  • John Lovett, Jr. testified three times about his age,
> In 1669, he was aged about 32, so born about 1637
> In 1678, he was aged about 40, so born about 1638
> In 1683, he was aged about 45, so born about 1638
  • John Lovett Jr. was reported about age 91 when he died in 1727, so born about 1636.
  • Mary (_____) Lovett swore in 1673 that was then aged about 50, thus born about 1623; she would have been about 13 in 1636; 14 in 1637 and 15 in 1638.

(2) John Lovett, Jr -- birth. He was born, probably 1638, but should we report his birth at England (uncertain) or Massachusetts Bay (uncertain)? And, if England (uncertain), should he be PGM, since we report the father's immigration as 1639?

(3) Mary (_____) Lovett joined the Salem church in 1650 and shortly "Simon, Joseph & Mary chs of Sister Levett" were baptized, 8 September 1650. (So John Lovett, Jr. is not among the children then baptized). Below summarizes "our" efforts to estimate the births of these three children

  • Mary Lovett, born about 1645 (assumes she was age 21 or 22 at the time of her marriage to Thomas Patch; they had two children baptized Beverly, 19 July 1668.
  • Joseph Lovett, born about 1648 (assumes he was 25 at marriage, which WikiTree reports as 1673, which seems not well documented).
  • Simon Lovett, born before 8 September 1650 (baptism).

(4) Mary (_____) Lovett's death. Cutter/Lewis Publishing (1908) reported she died June 1694. As with so many of Cutter's claims about early folks, he provided no reference and none has been found. Mary survived her husband John (she appeared on ____, swearing to the inventory of her late husband's estate).

Biography

Mary was born about _____ , presumably England; she died, probably Beverly, then Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, ______ .

As "Mary Lovett," she was among 20 admitted to the Salem church in 1650, and on 1 : 7 : 1650, baptisms at the church included, "Simon, Joseph & Mary chs of Sister Levett."[1]

In Salem, 1 : 5 : 1652 [1 July 1652], together with witnesses "John Grover, Math. West and Roger Conant," she testified at court in [the presentment of] "Thomas Tuck ... for being drunk",[2]

... The wife of John Lovet, living on Cappan sid by the highway, testified that she saw Goodman Tuefe [Tuck?] go reeling, not able to walk in the highway, being very much overtaken with drink and accompanied by his father, Samuel Archer.

On 30. 9. 1664, Mary Lovett was a witness to the presentment of Elisabeth, the wife of "Umphery Woodbery."[3]

On 20 September 1667, the Church of Christ att Bass River[4] in Beverly was founded; its first registrant was Robert Morgan, followed by pastor John Hale. "Mary Louitt" was among the many "brethren & sisters belonging to Basse Riuer who "doe present our desires to the rest of the Church of Salem that with their consent wee and our children may be a church of our selues." Those so named also included "Josias Roote." Mary's son, "Joseph Lovet," and Josiah's daughter, "Bethia Lovett," were reported among those "not in full Communion [but] desire[d] to be dismissed with their parents."[5] The names of Mary Lovett and Josias Rootes Senior were included the 50 who first subscribed to the church covenant.[6]

In a case concerning Goodwife Woolfe, wife of Peter Woolfe, "for abusive carriage at meeting on the Lord's Day," "Mary Lovit" was sworn and deposed before Major William Hathorne, attested by Hilliard Veren, cleric, 1 :7 : 1673, "Mary Lovit, aged about fifty years," the balance of her testimony is not on record, but no doubt she was called as a witness in the Woolfe case. In the same matter, [7]

Tamsin Taply, aged forty-two years, deposed that she saw Goodwife Woolfe sit so long in Goodwife Stackhouses lap that she leaned her head against the seat. Deponent would not have seen it, had not Goodwife Lovett pulled her by the arm to show it to her. [Testimony of 15 : 7: 1673]

Her husband, John Lovett, died at Beverly, 8 November 1686.[8][9] In his will, John Lovett calls her his "true and loving wife Mary." He leaves to her,

"four acres of Land with houseing outhouseing trees of fruits & all other appurtences pertaining to my homestead and also three acres of meadow adjoyning to Richd Dodges Grounds and all my Stock of meal cattle and all other creatures and all my household stuff ... "

John asks that his sons, "Jno and Joseph Lovet Thomas Patch and George Standley ... during her widdowhood find her with wood cut convenient for her and delivered at her door ..."

Mary died _____ (From what set of primary historical records does the date Jun 1695 arise?)

Family

  1. John Lovett [Jr.], born, probably England, say 1638 (he was about age 32[10] in 1669, and about age 40[11] in 1678); married Bethiah Rootes ... Note: John seems unlikely of wife, Mary, unless other references to her age are learned) - WIP
  2. Simon Lovett WIP
  3. Joseph Lovett WIP
  4. Mary Lovett, probably born Mackerel Cove, then Salem (now Beverly), before 1643 (she was "above 80" at the time of her death in 1723); died Wenham, Essex County, 26 September 1723.[12] Married Thomas Patch ... WIP
  5. Bethia Lovett, probably Mackerel Cove, probably after 8 September 1650, baptized Salem, 13 June 1652;[13] died Beverly, before 25 July 1706; (date administration granted on estate of George Standley).[14] married before 18 July 1698, George Standley.[15]
  6. Abigail Lovett, probably born Mackerel Cove, 20 August 1654,[16] baptized Salem, 18 March 1655;[17] died, probably Mackerel Cove, 27 May 1659.[18]
  7. Abigail Lovett, probably born Mackerel Cove, after 27 May 1659 (date sister of the same name died); married, probably Beverly, before 1684, Issac Randall, probably born at England, who died of Beverly before 23 April 1684.[19] Abigail perhaps married (2) about 1686, Thomas Woodbury, and then (3) Thomas Larcum as his second wife. Abigail is most likely the widow of Thomas Larkum who died Beverly between June and August, 1740.[20]

Research Notes

Birth. When was Mary born? Mary was deposed in 1673, saying she was about aged 50, thus born about 1623. She had given birth to at least three children by 1650 (Simon, Joseph and Mary were baptized at Salem on as "ch. of Sister Lovit"). Note Cutter (1908) claims she was born about 1605,[21] and Stone claims she was born about 1615; "She died June 1695, aged about 80" (no references).[22]

Marriage.

  • [_____] claims Mary married John Lovett at Salem, Massachusetts about 1636-7.[citation needed] (Who? Is this from Torrey material?)
  • Torrey/Roberts 1985 entry as John Lovet (1612, ?1610-1686) married Mary _______, m.. 1637, m. 1636?; Salem.[23]
  • For the current Torrey version, see New England Marriages to 1700 (Boston, Mass.: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2015), multiple vols., 2:972; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors. reports the same data, cites "Salem [2:70, EIHC 40:215; Granberry 275 [sic], see FamilySearch p. 270."

Errors in Print. In 1965, Frank Nelson Hall called her "Mary Grant" in A Lovett Genealogy ... (no records confirming surname of Grant).[24] A previous version of her profile identified her as this "Mary Grant"; her surname was later updated to "unknown."
