Biography
John Warham was baptised in Crewkerne, Somerset, England, 9 October 1595, the son of Richard Warham and Agnes Cooke Howper Warham.[1] He died in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut, 1 April 1670.[2]
He was educated at St. Mary's Hall, Oxford, with a B.A. degree in 1614 followed by an M.A. in 1618.[3]
John married (1) in Stoke Abbott, Dorset, England, 8 June 1625, Susanna Gallop.[4] Five children were born to the marriage but none survived to adulthood. Susanna (Gallop) Warham died in 1634. From a 12 December 1634 entry in the Journal of John Winthrop, Jr., "Mrs. Warham is dead."[5]
John Warham married (2) by about 1637, Jane (_____) Newbury, the widow of Thomas Newbury.[6] Three of the four daughters born to this marriage survived, married and left children. By this time the family had moved from England to Dorchester, Massachusetts to Windsor, Connecticut.
A few years before his death, Rev. Warham married (3) in Windsor, Hartford, Connecticut, 9 October 1662, Abigail (Searle) Brancker,[7] the widow of John Branker of Windsor.[8] She died in Windsor, 18 May 1684.[9]
Immigration
John Warham immigrated in 1630 aboard the Mary & John, settling first at Dorchester. The family removed to Windsor in 1636.[10]
Life at New England
Historical significance:
- He was a founder of Windsor, Connecticut. He was a religious dissident clergy in his native England. Given a choice of immigrating to New England or going to jail, he chose New England. Most of his congregation came with him. They arrived at Dorchester, Massachusetts and soon settled at Windsor, Connecticut.
- John immigrated on the ship Mary and John [11] which sailed on March 20, 1630 "and after a passage of little more than 70 days arrived at Nantucket on the Lord's day May 30th -- contrary to their wishes the Capt. put them on shore with their effects. They however obtained help and in a boat proceeded up Charles river to Watertown, built shelters & took up a temporary abode. They soon removed to a neck of Land at a short distance which they called by the name of Dorchester."[12]
- From a history of Windsor 1st church, Henry A. Rowland wrote (1801),[12]
The next year there was a scarcity of provision in this & the other new settlements and the people were nigh to perishing. They subsisted chiefly on acorns & clams. A vessel was dispatched to Ireland for provisions which return in such season as to prevent their perishing.

Research Notes
Second Wife, Jane. A Newbury Genealogy states that Thomas Newberry's first wife was Joan Dobinette and that his second wife was her cousin Jane Dobinette.[27] Other sources [28] and [29] leave the surname of John Warham's second wife as unknown.
Family and Ancestry. Anderson wrote (1995), "In 1989, Judy Osborn published the results of extensive research [about] four generation of ancestry for John Warham," citing the work as "M&JCH 12:1-26, 17:164-71. Anderson further reported that Osborn's materials were evaluated in 1990 by Myrtle S. Hyde, who found "more avenues need to be pursued, but the basic family tree looks good."[30]
