Biography

Hannah Jones was born about 1633; the daughter of Thomas Jones and his wife Ann (Linney) Jones. In a 2022 article, author Robert Battle found no birth or baptism record for Hannah, saying that the records at Caversham at that time had gaps, or it may be that her baptism happened elsewhere, prior to the family's immigration. Her father was Thomas Jones, probably the one who was baptized at Caversham, Oxfordshire, England on January 23, 1602/3; the son of Roger Jones. Her mother was Ann Linney, baptized December 26, 1603 at Henley on Thames, Oxfordshire; the daughter of Floris/Florence Linney and his wife Helen (Benson) Linney.[1]

In April 1638, at about the age of 4-5 years, Hannah probably immigrated with her parents on the ship Confidence bound for New England. There were four underage children with their parents on the ship, [2] the other three were Hannah's living siblings - Abraham, Sarah, John. Also on board the Confidence were the Jones' servants, William Baunsh(e) and Jude Donley (or Denley); as well the family of John Benson of Caversham who were probably closely related to Helen (Benson) Linney, Hannah's grandmother.[1]

Residing firstly at Hingham, Hannah's father Thomas Jones was the tailor of Caversham and continued with the same occupation in Hingham, Massachusetts Bay Colony following the family's migration.[3] While in Hingham, three more siblings of Hannah came into the world, Thomas, Mary, and Ephraim.[1]

In 1650, when Hannah was about 16 years of age, her mother died. The family moved to Hull where her father married Abigail (unknown surname) Ellithorpe in 1657.[1]

Hannah married Richard Goodwin at Gloucester on November 20, 1666.[4] He was the son of Richard Goodwin born at Gloucester about 1640, died March 5, 1708/9.[3][5]

Hannah Goodwin, widow, died Feb. 4, 1724-5, at about 80 years of age in Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts Bay.[6][3]

Research Notes

1. Ethel Farrington Smith in her "Seventieth Century Hull, Massachusetts, and Her People"[7] says that Tingley in "Some Ancestral Lines Being a Record of Some of The Ancestors of Guilford Solon Tingley and His Wife Martha Pamelia Meyers" lists 8 children to Hannah and Richard Goodwin. The others are: Joseph Goodwin, b. 22 Nov 1677 at Gloucester; Daniel Goodwin, b. 21 Feb 1684/5 at Gloucester d. Apr 1717 aged 30; and Sarah Goodwin b. 15 Sep 1687, Gloucester.[8] NOTE that "Genealogical Items Relative to Gloucester" mentions only children Hannah, Richard, Thomas, Mary, and Eleanor.[4]
