John Leach (bef.1616-aft.1685)
Contents |
Biography
Caution: This John Leach is almost certainly not the man John Leach who married Marblehead, Massachusetts, 15 December 1683, Sarah Waldron, as her first husband. See Research Notes and Leach-Waldron Research Notes.
John Leach was baptized in Sonning, Berkshire, England, 29 September 1616, the son of Lawrence Leach and his wife, Elizabeth Milhelm.[1] John died, probably Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, after 26 January 1684/5, the date on which "John Lea[ch?]" testified at court.[2][3]
John Leach, married, by 1648 (birth of child), Sarah Conant, born probably Salem, say 1623, the second daughter so named of Roger Conant and Sarah Horton.[4]
Immigration
His parents, Lawrence Leach and Elizabeth (Mileham) Leach. immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony as early as 1629.[5] John is presumed to have immigrated with his parents and siblings.
At Massachusetts Bay Colony
John Leach is presumed one of Lawrence's sons granted land in 1639. On 15 : 3 mo [1639], Salem "Granted to Lawrence Leachs two Sons 70 acres of land, where of 7 acres of meadow. They both relinquishing ther former grants of 20 & 30 acres."[6][7]
Robert Charles Anderson wrote (1995), "There being several men named John Leach, this man's career is presently unclear."[8]
Family
John and Sarah (Conant) Leach were the parents of children at least six children, born or baptized Salem;[9][10] of whom, one son and four daughters survived at the time Roger Conant wrote his will, 1 [March] 1677[/8],
- John Leach, baptized 3: 7 mo. : 1648 [3 September 1648], "son of Sister Leach."[11] Mentioned in Roger Conant's will.
- Rachel Leach, baptized 6 : 2 mo. : 1651 [6 April 1651], "daughter of Sister Leech."[12]
- Sarah Leach, baptized 6 : 4 mo. : 1652 [6 June 1652], "daughter of Jon Leach."[13]
- Mary Leach, perhaps the child baptized 3 : 7 mo. : 1654 [3 September 1654], "daughter of Sister Leach";[14] married 2 March 1680, Thomas Field. Presumed the Mary Leach mentioned in Roger Conant's will.
- Remember Leach, baptized 3 : 9 mo. : 1661 [3 November 1661], a daughter "of John Leach."[15]
- Hannah Leach, baptized 3 : 9 mo. : 1661 [3 November 1661], a daughter "of John Leach."[16]

Not John Leach of Dedcom, England. John Leach of Dedcom, England, married at Marblehead, Massachusetts, 15 December 1683 to Sarah Waldron, as her first husband. Sarah Waldon's husband died 1688, Marblehead. [Essex Probate, case #16485 (1695)]. Essex (Massachusetts) Deeds 13:148 reports that his estate was deemed insolvent at Superior Court in Salem, 12 November 1698.
It seems highly unlikely that Lawrence Leach's son, so well known at Salem, would be referred to as "of England" in 1683. Likewise, without considerable understanding, why an estate about the man who was Lawrence's son would have been deemed insolvent.
Quite separately, Sarah Waldron was born Marblehead March 1666/7, daughter of John and Dorothy (Dollever) Waldron. As Sarah Leach, she married again, Timothy Goodwin. See Leach-Waldron Research Notes.
Salem Baptisms. The baptismal records for nine children born almost certainly to either Richard^2 Leach or John^2 Leach appear in the Salem church records reporting the only parent as "Sister Le[e/a]ch." Four additional children's baptisms mention a father's name--John/Jon (three children) or Richard (one child). See Salem Baptisms.
Unknown name child Leech, 1665. The records of Salem First Church provide for a group of children baptized as "___", with a given name not recorded. Among those then baptized is "_____ of Sister Leech." See Richard D. Pierce, The Records of the First Church in Salem, Massachusetts, 1629-1736 (Salem, Mass. : Essex Institute, 1974), 26 (1 : 27 : 1665); digital images, InternetArchive, "[1665] 1:27" [read 27 : 1 mo. : 1665]--"____ of Sister Leech."
