Overview

The motivation for this work was a desire to connect descendants of William Tyllcott of Nailstone, Leicestershire (c1500-1547), to those of John Taylcott of Colchester, Essex (c1535-1606). The author explains a relationship between William and John by adding two generations to the top of Sebastian V. Talcott's 1876 tree--earlier ancestors of Colchester, Essex, and Chilvers Coton, Warwickshire. With these additions, Tylcote maintains John Talcott of Colchester, died 1606, was the nephew of William Tyllcott of Nailstone. See the Tylecote 1998 chart at p. 7.

Presumably about these earlier ancestral families (p. 8), Tylecote writes, "Due to the very early date of this family we lack full documentary proof and there is considerable conjecture." The author reports the Chilvers Coton registers prior to 1654 are not extant.

The work is more conclusionary than evidentiary--the author reportedly reviewed wills, court and parish/IGI records, but transciptions are not provided, and Tylcote did not include a source list or reference notes. If the author did seek to confirm or triangulate information/relationships between records and/or record groups, such work is not obvious and little critical analysis is found in the 1998 work.

Note: Without Tylecote's archives (perhaps even with), It would take a massive effort to first re-trace his information, and then determine if sufficient other records are necessary and accessible to prove or disprove the claims. (GeneJ, 2022)

Earlier Ancestry

Tylecote creates an earlier John Tyllcott of Colchester (c1500-?) as the father of John Taylcott of Colchester (d. 1606). This newly created John Tyllcott of Colchester (c1500-?) is then given as the brother of William Tyllcott of Nailstone (c1500-1547), both sons of another created ancestor, John Talcot of Chilvers Coton (c1470 -?). This John (c1470-?) has other reported sons, as below.

JohnD Talcott of Chilvers Coton, born c1470, & family

Note: these individuals seem loosely associated (GeneJ, 2022), see Tylecote p. 8 (1998). Tylecote (1998) reports issue,
  1. JohnC Tyllcott, born c1500, "almost certainly at Chilvers Coton" (said later a man of Colchester, given as the father of our John of Colchester).
  2. Thomas Tyllcott, born c1500. "Believed to have lived at Nailstone, Leics. Farmer."
  3. William Tyllcott, born c1500, made will 1547; lived at Nailstone, Leicestershire.
  4. Henry Teylcolt (or Taylcott), born c1500, died between 16 October 1550 (date of will) and 12 March 1551 (will proved). "Lived in the parish of St Botolph, Colchester, Essex."
  5. (possibly) Other children Tylcott

JohnC Tyllcott of Colchester, born c1500, & family

Note: Historical references for this John, born c1500 are not clear. Author claims/alleges (1998), "He is the 'Talcott of Warwickshire' mentioned in the 1634 Essex Visitation," adding, "...whose forename, according to SVT, was later established as John." No reference to the support of this by Talcott is given. From Tylcote (1998), also without reference, "He must have moved from Warwickshire to Colchester, possibly via Cambridge, where there was said to be a John Talcott, Doctor of Divinity, in 1537 ... if so, he did not obtain his doctorate at Cambridge because we have checked the records there." See Tylecote p. 9 (1998) for reported issue,
  1. JohnB Taylcott, born around 1535/1540, certainly at Colchester, died 1606.
  2. ?Other children Taylcott.

Previously reported Ancestors

JohnB Taylcott of Colchester, died 1606, & family

Note: Tylecote's 1998 update to Sebastian V. Talcott (1876) is signifiant--to John's family, he adds detail (alleged but compelling baptismal dates for some of John's known issue) and other children (via the same)--all records reportedly from St. Mary's, Colchester). Some of Tylcote's reported baptismal dates appear in IGI (index only) entries in FamilySearch's "England Births ...," but ready access to the underlying registers is elusive. The records do not appear on FreeReg (2022), but baptisms, marriages and burials at other nearby parishes do--see "Taylcott" (soundex) search, 1534-1650. See also, Tylecote p. 7 (1994) and Tylecote p. 11 (1998). Assuming the father's name was given as John in all the records Tylecote reported, how can we be sure there were not two or more men of Colchester named John who were baptizing children? The question is valid, especially since the author claimed his father and grandfather would both have been named John. Of note,
  • Pewterer. Tylcote (1998) reports JohnB Taylcott was identified as a pewterer, executor, in the 1578 will of his "cousin William," but such a will is not further referenced, and a profile of William was not seen. Without retracing Tylcote's work, we are otherwise unable to know how/if JohnB Taylcott is the man who was a cousin of the noted William.
  • First wife. Tylcote (1998) reports his first wife's name was Allis. Like Talcott (1876), the record reports she was the daughter of John Wells, baker of Colchester. Neither author provided details about how any of those details are known
  • Eldest son. John (JohnA) was reported by Talcott (1876) as "born (probably) in Colchester previous to 1558" (InternetArchive) but Tylcote (1998) attributes a baptism at St. Mary's Colchester, 04.10.1562. (The 1558 date may refer to that year's Visitation of Essex, but only the record from 1634 has been seen. Talcott cites the 1558 "arms and pedigree," as "vol. 1137, page 148 ... Harlean Manuscripts," British Museum.)
  • Eldest daughter. Talcott (1876) called her _____ Talcott, married _____ Bernard, and had John and Mary; Tylcote calls her Anne Taylecott ... married John Bernard, and had John, Mary and Anne.
  • Second wife. In his earlier pamphlet, Tylecote (1994) reported John married (2), at St. Mary's Colchester, 28.09.1574 [28 September 1574], Mary or Marie Pullen, with their first child as Thomas Talcott, actually baptized earlier, 10.01.1573 [10 January 1573]. The Talcott-Pullen marriage date does not appear in the book (1998), and the year of the marriage is there "1569" (still at St. Mary's). In the book (1998), Thomas is the second son and third child of the marriage, but we know from his mother's will that he was her eldest son.
  • Son John (2). Tylcote (1998) reports he was Marie's eldest son, born c1570 (note above), and that he married 05.04.1592, Ann Scott. We know otherwise that he was not his mother's eldest son, and no records are given that would show how/if the claimed marriage was proved.
  • Added children. Based surely on register/IGI records, Tylcote (1998) adds four (4) children to the family group. These include a daughter Elizabeth (baptized 1571), two sons William (one buried 1576, the other baptized 1577), and a Benjamin (baptized 1589). No such named children are found in the mother's will.
Tylecote reports issue,
By first wife, "Aliss Wells ... daughter of John Wells, baker of Colchester."
  1. John Talcott, baptized St. Mary's Colchester, 04.10.1562 [4 October 1562] (see note above); married Anne Skinner (6 children). See also, p. 13.
  2. Robert Talcott, baptized St. Mary's Colchester, 26.04.1565 [26 April 1565]; married Joanna Crane (6 children). Talcott called his wife Joanna Drane, daughter and heir of John Drane of Beanford, Co. Suffolk ..."
  3. Anne Taylecott, baptized St. Mary's Colchester, 19.09.1568 [19 September 1568]; married John Bernard (3 children--John, Mary and Ann).
By second wife, "Mary or Marie Pullen ... "; will dated 09.06.1625 [9 June 1625], buried 13.03.1627 [13 March 1627].
  1. John Talcott, born c1570 [no baptism identified]; married 05.04.1592 [5 April 1592] Ann Scott. He was a merchant in Madrid, 1625.
  2. Elizabeth Taylcott, baptized St Mary's Colchester, 13.10.1571 [13 October 1571].
  3. Thomas Talcott, baptized St. Mary's Colchester, 10.01.1573 [10 January 1573]; married Margaret Bigg (6 children).
  4. William Taylecott, probably born about 1574, buried 29.04.1576, St. Mary's Colchester.
  5. Mary or Mary Talcott, baptized St. Mary's Colchester, 06.11.1575 [6 November 1575]; married _____ Marshall.
  6. William Taylcott, baptized St. Mary's Colchester, 10.11.1577 [10 November 1574].
  7. Grace Taylcott [no baptism identified]; married John Death.
  8. Joanna Talcott [no baptism identified]; married _____ Knewstuble.
  9. Eme Talcott [no baptism identified]; Thomas Adler.
  10. Benjamin Taylecott, baptized St. Mary's, 20.12.1589 [20 December 1589].

JohnA Talcott of Braintree, died 1604, & family

Note: Tylcote (1998) seems not to have consulted published materials beyond Talcott (1876), nor otherwise to have reviewed the wills of William Skinner (1616) and Margerie Skynner (1617), thus his family compilation overlooks particularly key information. Tylcote (1998) mostly followed Talcott (1876), including or except that he claimed the items below, which are conflicted or disproven,
  • Daughter Ann. Tylcote reports Ann Talcott married 1614, Thomas Clench; providing no references or further information. This claim is not found in Talcott (1876). Note: Anne (Skinner) (Talcott) Wall's daughter Ann is not mentioned in the will of William Skinner (1616) and Margerie Skynner (1617/8), so she was presumably deceased by that time. Whether or not she married is unknown; if she did marry, the Skinner wills suggest she left no heirs. See Research Notes.
  • Daughter Mary. Tylcote reports Mary Talcott married Bagot Eggleston and "went to America, 1630." This claim is found in Talcott (1876), but she is not mentioned in the Skinner wills (1616 and 1617), so this daughter Mary almost certainly died young. See also Robert Charles Anderson's report about the immigrant, Bigod Eggleston--Anderson found no support to identify either wife--The Great Migration Begins: Immigrants to New England 1620-1633, Volumes I-III, 3 vols. (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 1995). 620-624 (Bigod Eggleston) at 622; digital images by subscription, AmericanAncestors.
  • Daughter Grace. Tylcote reports Grace Talcott was "unmarried in 1623." This claim is found in Talcott (1876), but seems an errant reading of Moses Wall's will so dated--that will makes no mention of such a step child; this daughter probably died young. See Moses Wall 1623 Will.
Tylcote reports issue, see p. 13.
  1. Anne Talcott, born at Braintree, married 1614, Thomas Clench.
  2. Rachel1 Talcott, born at Braintree.
  3. John1 Talcott, born about 1590 at Braintree and went to America; married Dorothy Mott (3 children; continued).
  4. Mary Talcott, born at Braintree and went to America; married Bagot Eggleston (2 children).
  5. Grace Talcott, born at Braintree; unmarried in 1623.
  6. Sarah1 Talcott, born at Braintree, married William Wadsworth.

Presentation.

  • Tylcote's dates are herein presumed dd.mm.yyyy, new style equivalent.
  • This presentation adds the Register-style genealogical numbering system to the ancestry of the three New England immigrants.

Talcott-Clench. The marriage returns in a search for records within 12 miles of Colchester on FreeReg. Particular entry cites Colchester, St. Runwald (parish Register) for the union 1 September 1614, Ann Talcott and Thomas Clench. No corresponding Ann Clench (soundex) death/burial entry returned in the immediate time period. See also Clench search for entries about Braintree and nearby parishes. (St. Runwold is considered a neighboring parish to Colchester, but not Braintree.)
