Disputed Associations
Disputed Parentage. Although Thomas Spooner (1869) suggested William Spooner's parents were John Spooner and Anne Peck, both born England but last known of Leiden, Holland, this association lacks historical support and has been disputed by WikiTree collaborators. See William Spooner (PGM) -- Is there historical evidence for a link to parents? and Research Notes.
Biography
William Spooner's origins are unknown or unproven.[1] He was born, probably England, only perhaps Colchester, Essex,[2] about 1623 (estimated age at indenture). William died in Dartmouth, Plymouth Colony, between 8 March 1683[/4] (date of will) and 14 March 1683[/4] (inventory of William Spooner "of Dartmouth late Deceased").[3]
William Spooner married (1) presumably Plymouth Colony, by about 1646 (birth of child), Elizabeth _____ (sometimes called Elizabeth Partridge, see Research Notes). She was born probably England, about 1625 (presumed age at first marriage), and died at Plymouth, Plymouth Colony, 28 April 1648.[4]
William Spooner married (2) in Plymouth, 18 March 1651/2, Hannah Pratt.[5] She was born, probably Plymouth, say 1632, the daughter of Joshua Pratt and his wife, Bathsheba.[6] Hannah was not mentioned in William's 1684 will and is presumed to have predeceased him.
Immigration
Robert Charles Anderson (2015) placed William Spooner's arrival in Plymouth, Plymouth Colony at 1637.[7] This is based on the record of his apprenticeship/indenture. From Records of the Colony of New Plymouth ... (emphasis added),[8]
Whereas, William Spooner of Colchester in the County of Essex by his Indenture, beareinge date the twenty seaventh day of March Anno Dui 1637, in the thirteenth year of his Ma^ties Raigne $c hath put himself apprentice w^th John Holmes, of New Plymouth in America gent from the first day of May next after the date of the said Indenture vnto thend _ terme of six yeares thence ensuing w^th diuers other couenant_ both pts to be pformed eich to other by the Indent it doth more plainely appeare. At Plymouth Colony
The earliest notice of William Spooner at Plymouth is the record (above) of his indenture/apprenticeship with John Holmes being assumed by John Coombs, with William's consent. Given the terms of the indenture, it would have ended 27 March 1643. Immediately prior to that date, 6 March 1642/3, an interesting record orders William Spooner to pay "the debt of ... his master."[9]
It is ordered by the Court, that Wilim Spooner shall pay for the debt of Mr Combe, his master, vnto Mr Wm Hanbury, the sum of xs, wch was attached in Mr Prenc_ hand, wch Mr Prence did acquit to Mr Combe ; but the debt remayneing due to Mr Hanbury as aforesd, the said Spooner shall pay it to Mr Hanbury by a bushell of wheate, & a bushell & a half of barley.
William Spooner's name appears on the August 1643 Plymouth "List of Men Able to Bear Arms."[10]
John Coombs had died by 15 October 1646, and his widow had already left for England, leaving a child or children with William Spooner. At court,[11]
William Spooner came before the Gour and vndertooke to saue the towne harmeles from any charge that might befalle by reason of a child that Mrs Coombs left with him when she wente for England, and which he vndertooke to keepe & prouid for.
Two years later, on 1 August 1648, William Spooner, then a widower, again appeared at court regarding the Coombs family,[12]
Att this Court it was ordered, yt Thomas Cushman shall haue and enjoy, without disturbance, the one third part of all the English corn due vnto Mis Combe, for her part, from William Spooner, for this p'sent yeare, excepting the rye, wherof hee is to haue the one halfe, and one part of fine of the Indian com, and the one half of the finite, and the one half of the hempe. The said Court haue further ordered, concerning the children of the said Mis Combe, now being with William Spooner, yt the said Spooner keepe them for the p'sent, and not dispose of them for the future, without further order from the Court.
William Spooner stood for freemanship[13] on 7 June 1653,[14] and was sworn and admitted, 6 June 1654.[15]
On 8 June 1655, William was named one of the three "Surveyors of the Highwaies" for Plymouth.[16]
In 1657[17] and 1666,[18] William sat on Grand Enquests (grand juries).[19]
Possibly the last notice of him at Plymouth, his name appears on a list of names, "First, Plymouth," about 1658, thought to be a list of the town's freemen.[20]
The family removed to Dartmouth. On 9 June 1665, the court addressed John Rushell "of Acushena, allis Dartmouth" in a matter concerning Hannah (Pratt) Spooner.[21] Rushell was fined, and a condition of his release was that,
... if the said John Rushell shall and doe appeer att the Generall Court ... to be holden att Plymouth the first Tusday in October next to answare for any thinge that may bee further objected against him conserning attempting the chastitie of Hannah, the wife of William Spooner.
On 29 May 1670, William's name appeared on the list of Dartmouth freemen.[22]
On 5 March 1677/8, the court ordered that William Spooner should receive £2 10s, due to "the defect of a constable in the towne of Dartmouth ..."[23]
---WIP---
From Spooner--resided Plymouth until about 1660, when he removed to the new settlement at Acushnet in the Dartmouth purchase. Here he held lands in his own name and an interest in the purchase.
Question-- reference for "Held lands ...'" Where do we find the grants/deeds???
From Spooner--Family tradition that William and his sons built the first mill at Dartmouth.

Birth. Research about English indentures has been used to estimate his date of birth. In 1637 William had 6 years of indenture left. Assuming that William fit the criteria for completing his apprenticeship by the age of 24, he would be no older than 24 by 1643, putting his birth year about 1619. Assuming he would complete his service by the age of 21 in 1643, his birth year would be about 1622. From this material, the median age for London apprentices, from 1630 to 1639, was 16.86 years and the mean age was 17.46 years, with an age of 15.45 years in the 25th percentile and 18.73 years in the 75th percentile.

John Holmes. Can anything more be learned about William from the study of "John Holmes, of New Plymouth in America gent," to whom our William Spooner od Colchester was first apprenticed? This contract was later transferred to John Coombs I (1610-1646). Parentage/Sibling/Leiden? Great speculation is found in print[53] regarding the possible association of William Spooner as the son of John Spooner (Jan Spoenaert) and Ann Peck, married Leiden, Holland, 24 December 1616. She married (2) in Leiden, 28 June 1631, Peter Powell.
The earliest records about this by Thomas Spooner (b. 1817) seems "Ann Spooner," in "Notes and Queries," The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, 23 (1869):348 (Ann Spooner); digital images, Hathi Trust.
In 1883, Spooner was still writing about this,[54] "It is known that in 1616, John Spooner was living in Leyden and was the head of a family;—also, that Ann S., his widow, was there in 1630. In 1637 an Ann Spooner was in Salem, who it is supposed was the Ann S. of Leyden, and that John and Ann of Leyden were the parents of William of 'Plymouth and of Thomas, who was in Salem in 1637."
Those interested in pursuing this possible association may want to review Anderson's 1995 comments about Hannah (Pratt) Spooner's mother, Bathsheba.

The fact that her sur-name was Pa[r]tridge, is learned from a record made by James Spooner, No. 680, “as related to him by Walter Spooner,” No. 179. Walter was born in 1720, his grandfather, Samuel S., lived until 1739, and his great uncle, John S. is known to have been living in 1734. Walter, at these periods of time, was of an age to have an interest in such matters, and from either John, the son of Elizabeth, or of his grandfather, he probably obtained the record communicated by him to his Plymouth relative.
Colchester, Essex ... Herein, reference is presumed to Colchester, Essex, England, now about 50 miles northeast of London. Spooner (1869, p. 407) casts doubt on this identification, suggesting it refers to the place Salisbury, then Old (County) Norfolk, and after 1643, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay. Given the plain reading of the indenture, it more likely refers to the place in England--were all the parties then residing New England, it seems unlikely the agreement would have referred to John Holmes as (emphasis added) "of New Plymouth in America gent."
Bristol County, Massachusetts. According to Wikipedia, Bristol County, Massachusetts was founded 2 June 1685, from parts of Plymouth County.
Plymouth. According to Wikipedia, Plymouth/Plimouth/Plimoth, was the capital of Plymouth Colony from its founding (1620) until the merger with Massachusetts Bay in 1691.
Deeds. Deed work has not been done.
Prior Version. Prior version of this profile reported hie was born (a) 1590, (b) in Colchester, Essex, England, 1 January 1621, without citing reliable sources. His death war reported in "Acushnet, Dartmouth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay Colony," "about 1684"

Disputed Parents & Origin
Although it was claimed in William's indenture dated 27 March 1637, that he was of Colchester, Essex, England[55] (reference is presumed to be Colchester, Essex, England, about 50 miles northeast of London), in an 1869 piece published in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Thomas Spooner[56] casts doubt on this identification, suggesting it refers to the place Salisbury, then Old (County) Norfolk, and after 1643, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay. However, he prefaced his assertion by saying, "[w]ithout entering into a statement of the reasons that influence the opinion..." (which reasons he definitely did not give) and in the footnotes he admitted that Essex as a county in Massachusetts didn't appear until 1642. He provided no evidence, nor reasons for doubting the indenture referred to Colchester, Essex, England as William's origin in the first place, nor are his arguments for a replacement location convincing.
Parentage/Leiden? Great speculation is found in print[57] regarding the possible association of William Spooner as the son of John Spooner (Jan Spoenaert) and Ann Peck, married Leiden, Holland, 24 December 1616. She married (2) in Leiden, 28 June 1631, Peter Powell. Those interested in pursuing this possible association may want to review Anderson's 1995 comments about Hannah (Pratt) Spooner's mother, Bathsheba.
Thomas Spooner proposed a theory, writing,[58] "It is known that in 1616, John Spooner was living in Leyden and was the head of a family;—also, that Ann S., his widow, was there in 1630. In 1637 an Ann Spooner was in Salem, who it is supposed was the Ann S. of Leyden, and that John and Ann of Leyden were the parents of William of Plymouth, and of Thomas, who was in Salem in 1637."
Biography
Birth and Origins
William was probably born before 1622 (most likely between 1619 and 1622), in, or near, Colchester, Essex, England.
Concerning his birth year, William's indenture, dated 27 March 1637, may provide a good estimate.[59] In 1652, under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the "Statute of Artificers 1562" was enacted by Parliament which stipulated that under some conditions (typically the poor or orphaned) apprentices should not serve after the age of 24,[60] yet section 36 of that act stated that no person should be bound to enter an apprenticeship under the age of 21.[61] The law was not overturned until 1766 at the earliest,[62] well after William's indenture. Assuming that William fit the criteria for completing his apprenticeship by the age of 24, he would be no older than 24 by 1643, putting his birth year about 1619. Assuming he would complete his service by the age of 21 in 1643, that puts his birth year at about 1622. See Research Notes, Birth Year for more information concerning his birth year.
As to his birth location, the apprenticeship/indenture in which William himself entered, stated that "[w]hereas William Spooner of Colchester in the County of Essex...hath put himself apprentice with John Holmes of New Plymouth in America..."[63] There is no reason to doubt the accuracy of the statement that he was of Colchester, England. The fact that William apprenticed himself to John Holmes, who was himself from Colchester, England, lends credence to William's whereabouts in England before migrating. Although William was "of Colchester" before departing England, that does not mean he was born there, although he probably was born either there, or nearby. There are many records of the time period for the surname Spooner within the area surrounding Colchester.
Immigration
It is unclear exactly how or when William arrived in New England, but based on the record of his apprenticeship/indenture,[64] it was most likely by 1637. It should be noted that John Holmes, the man to whom William was indentured, had been in Plymouth as early as 1633,[65] and John Coombs, the man to whom William's indenture was transferred, was in Plymouth as early as 1633.[66]
Marriages
William Spooner married twice:
First Marriage
- William Spooner married (1) presumably in Plymouth Colony, Elizabeth _____[67] (sometimes called Elizabeth Partridge, see Research Notes, Marriages) by 1648, as Elizabeth died in Plymouth Colony, 28 April 1648: "Elizabeth Spooner, the wife of William Spooner, died the twenty eight of Aprell [1648]."[68]
Second Marriage
- William Spooner married (2) in Plymouth, 18 March 1651/2, Hannah Pratt.[69] She was born, probably Plymouth, say 1632, the daughter of Joshua Pratt and his wife, Bathsheba.[70]
Children
Based on William's will,[71] he had the at least the following nine children, all of whom are believed to have been born to Hannah, with the possible exception of John (Thomas Spooner states that he was Elizabeth's son[72]) [the dates listed below need to be verified]:
- John Spooner was born about 1644 and died 7 Feb 1733/1734.
- Isaac Spooner was born about 1652 and died 27 Dec 1709.
- Sarah Spooner was born 5 Oct 1653[73] and died after 1720.
- William Spooner, Jr was born about 1654 and died after 27 Oct 1735.
- Samuel Spooner was born 14 Jan 1655[74] and died 1739.
- Hannah Spooner was born 1662 and died between 1651 AND 1755.
- Martha Spooner was born about 1663 and died after 25 Mar 1717.
- Mercy Spooner was born about 1663. She died after 1684.
- Ebenezer Spooner was born 1665 and died 5 Feb 1717/1718.
At Plymouth Colony
On 6 March 1642/3, at a general court of assistance, William was ordered to pay a debt that his master, John Coombs, owed.[75] This event begs the question as to why William was ordered to pay the debt? Was John no longer able, either through death, incapacitation or departure? If John had died, it's unlikely the court would have referred to him as William's "master." {working on this part}
By at least 15 October 1646, William's second master, John Coombs, had apparently died, and his wife, Sarah (Priest) Coombs, had returned to England. On that date William appeared before the governor to let him know that William would not hold the town responsible for providing for "a child that Mrs. Coombs left with [William] when she wente for England, and which he undertook to keepe and provide for."[76]
William was listed as among those males, 16-60, able to bear arms, 29 August 1643,[77] and listed as a freeman in Plymouth, about 1658.[78]

Research Notes
Birth Year
William's indenture was moved from John Holmes to John Coombs (both of New Plymouth), in which Coombs was to give William "a good serviceable muskett, bandiliers and sword fitt for service."[81] At a court held in Plymouth in January 1632/3, in Act 3 it was ordered that "every freeman or other inhabitant of this colony provide for himself, & each under him able to beare armes, a suficient musket, & other serviceable peece for war, wth bandeleroes, & other apurteneces..."[82] One can assume that William was old enough to bear arms, typically 16 or older.
Also, based on a study in 2009, the median age for London apprentices, from 1630 to 1639, was 16.86 years and the mean age was 17.46 years, with an age of 15.45 years in the 25th percentile and 18.73 years in the 75th percentile.[83] Based on that, an age of about 17 years can be assumed for William at the time of his indenture, putting his birth year at about 1619. However, William entered into the indenture himself, thereby leading one to believe he may have been at the upper end of the range. In 1652, under the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, the "Statute of Artificers 1562" was enacted by Parliament which stipulated that under some conditions (typically the poor or orphaned) apprentices should not serve after the age of 24, [84] yet section 36 of that act stated that no person should be bound to enter an apprenticeship under the age of 21.[85] The law was eventually overturned in 1766 and with finality in 1814. In 1637 William had 6 years of indenture left. Assuming that William fit the criteria for completing his apprenticeship by the age of 24, he would be no older than 24 by 1643, putting his birth year about 1619. Assuming he would complete his service by the age of 21 in 1643, that puts his birth year at about 1622.
William was most likely born sometime between 1619 and 1622.

Marriages
Elizabeth's Surname. From Thomas Spooner, Records of William Spooner of Plymouth, Mass., and His Descendants (Cincinnati [Press of F. W. Freeman], 1883), 24; digital image, HathiTrust, or InternetArchive. See also entry for James Spooner, No. 680, (1777-1838), HathiTrust],
- The fact that her surname was Pa[r]tridge, is learned from a record made by James Spooner, No.
