The table below shows the number of Littles baptised between 1533 and 1855 in Dumfriesshire, Scotland by parish, as retrieved from Scotlands People searches. They are also grouped by Church of Scotland, Roman Catholic and Non-Conformist, and show whether all have had WikiTree profiles created.

Columns also show the number of Monumental Inscriptions from that parish, and the number of individuals in the 1851 census, if they have been sourced and whether profiles created.

There are known to be some duplicates, and of course there will be missing records.

WikiTree profiles have already been created for all LITTLE Birth and Marriage events in Scotland, before 1700, using FindMyPast.

For statistics for the whole of Scotland, by county or burgh, see the Scotland Little Name Statistics.

So do these include Eskdale and Liddesdale stats too? or just the modern boundaries of Dumfriesshire? I think the older divisions were Annan, Eskdale, Liddesdale, and Ewesdale north of the border and the baronies of Gilsland, Liddel, etc. south of the border as things went back and forth. The border remained above the Esk for the most part after the Union of the Crowns but that area between Hadrians Wall and the Antonine were considered Cumbrian then Alba/Scott after 1100 CE or so. Even Carlisle was included briefly here and there. I'm curious to see what the same statistics might say over time (in slices) about any migration patterns in this territory as well as the neighboring districts for comparison purposes.

Hi Leake, apologies - forgot to reply! I am going with the modern (<1974) boundaries, as that is how the archives and sources are organised, so makes it easier to ensure completeness. As the work moved on from just BMDs and MIs, to more interesting records such as manorial, then the old boundaries are more relevant. At that point we can refactor the project(s).
