1903 "History of Montgomery Co. KS" published by L. Wallace Duncan (Sutro Library, San Francisco CA, 4/6/88) Pg.474-5: HARVEY DUNCAN, farmer, native of Fulton Co. IL, born Jan. 30, 1854; parents were Solomon and Rebecca Duncan, born in KY. The mother's family came from VA. Harvey Duncan one of 9 children: David, Molly, Beal, Anna Herrell, John, Harvey, Lida Taylor, James (decd.), and 2 died in infancy. In autumn 1870 family to Montgomery Co.; purchased claim at Independence; contested, settled 4 years later in favor of Solomon Duncan. Soon after, Harvey located claim next to his father. Harvey Duncan married Edith Drenner, native of IL, dau. of Jacob & Mary Drenner of VA; 4 children: Lina a teacher, Grace, Jay S., and John W. Republican. Pg.504-5: JOHN DUNCAN; arrived 1880 Montgomery Co., born Fulton Co. IL 1852; parents were Solomon and Rebecca (Emerine) Duncan; parents originally from Blue Grass State and were farmers as were their ancestors. 1908 "Greater Terre Haute and Vigo Co. IN" by Oakley, Vol. I (934,922 item 1; SLC 2/28/92) Pg.273-5: James Richard Duncan (sketch prepared by John B. Aikman), was born in Big Springs, Hardin Co. KY, January 7, 1843, and died in Terre Haute, November 10, 1903. His father, Rev. Peter Duncan, being a Methodist minister in a very remote rural district, and of frail health, felt the need of a more favorable environment; abandoned KY home when James was 14 years of age and moved to Mattoon [Coles Co.], IL. His ill health ... James inherited from his parents many of their sturdy traits ... Scotch ancestry to which the name Duncan belongs. First business undertaking a news stand in the depot hotel at Mattoon, IL, known as Essex House. Then engaged in retail grocery business. At this point in his career he was married, August 16, 1863, to Miss Julia Rosana Vreeland, who still survivies him. To them were born three daughters and one son, all of whom are still living, viz, Mrs. Virgil E. Perryman of Atlanta, GA; Miss Ida B. Duncan and Mrs. John B. Aikman of Terre Haute and Charles E. Duncan of Chicago. Paper & Stationery business named J.R. Duncan & Co., and hides & old materials business named Duncan & Kingsolver. In 1889 he took into partnership his son-in-law Mr. John B. Aikman. Additional information: Peter Duncan married Mourning "Horn", bondsman Ed. Allison, on 25 Jan. 1833 ("Madison Co. He fell a Martyr during the religious troubles that afflicted Scotland at the time of Charles II was restored to the throne of his ancestors. Rev. Wm. Duncan had a grandson William Duncan who was born in Scotland April 19, 1690, settled in the colony of VA in the year 1719. He was married to Ruth Rawley Feb. 11, 1722. Rawley Duncan born in Culpeper Co. VA. Nov. 23, 1724, was the grandfather of the late William Duncan of Jessamine Co. who died in 1863 and was born in Jessamine Co. Jan. 1, 1788. William m. KY, January 7, 1843, and died in Terre Haute, November 10, 1903. His father, Rev. Peter Duncan, being a Methodist minister in a very remote rural district, and of frail health, felt the need of a more favorable environment; abandoned KY home when James was 14 years of age and moved to Mattoon [Coles Co.], IL. His ill health ... James inherited from his parents many of their sturdy traits ... Scotch ancestry to which the name Duncan belongs. First business undertaking a news stand in the depot hotel at Mattoon, IL, known as Essex House. Then engaged in retail grocery business. At this point in his career he was married, August 16, 1863, to Miss Julia Rosana Vreeland, who still survivies him. He fell a Martyr during the religious troubles that afflicted Scotland at the time of Charles II was restored to the throne of his ancestors. Rev. Wm. Duncan had a grandson William Duncan who was born in Scotland April 19, 1690, settled in the colony of VA in the year 1719. He was married to Ruth Rawley Feb. 11, 1722. Rawley Duncan born in Culpeper Co. VA. Nov. 23, 1724, was the grandfather of the late William Duncan of Jessamine Co. who died in 1863 and was born in Jessamine Co. Jan. 1, 1788. William m.
