Dunmore County

History

Named for Virginia Governor John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, Virginia's last royal governor.

Dunmore was formed on March 24, 1772 from Frederick County. Dunmore was renamed to Shenandoah County on either January 12, 1778 or February 1, 1778.
