Dunmore County

History

Named for Virginia Governor John Murray, 4th Earl of Dunmore, Virginia's last royal governor.

Dunmore County was formed on March 24, 1772 from Frederick County. It was renamed to Shenandoah County on either January 12, 1778 or February 1, 1778.
