Dunmore Townland, Lissan Parish, County Tyrone

A townland a few miles north and west of Cookstown, County Tyrone. It lies on the border of two counties.

The neighbouring townlands are: Ballynagilly (south), Slaghtfreeden (west) both in the county of Tyrone; and to the north and east in the county of Londonderry: Ballybriest, Mobuy, Brackagh, and Clagan; all in the parish of Lissan.

As of Griffith's Valuation, the landlord of Dunmore and Slaghtfreeden was Mary Elizabeth Stuart Trench (sometimes recorded as "French"). According to a blog she was a member of the Poe family of aristocrats from Queen's County. Perhaps they owned Slaghtfreeden as a holiday house or something.

Older history

Dr. Allan Cook bought the lease for Dunmore, which lay about 4 miles from Cookstown at the foot of Slieve Gallion, in 1619-1620. His holdings also included Derryganard, Ballynagilly and Clagan. The townlands were part of the church lands of Mallanagh and were leased in lots of 4. [1] [2]

Tithe Applotment (1827)

Images of these books can be found on National Archives of Ireland website, which gives the land area and also the quality of farmland. Various sites transcribe the names and townlands.

15b is not actually marked on the map. 15a is adjacent to the homestead 7A.
1896-1903 is missing from the books; it must have gone to James Crooks after Thomas J. Bell's death in 1891 and then been re-acquired by his son.
