History
Originally established as a temporary location to house the sick and poor, the Dunwich Benevolent Asylum began operating at Dunwich, on the western side of North Stradbroke Island, Queensland, Australia, in 1865, starting with approximately 80-90 inmates. In it's 80 years of operation, it was home to over 21,000 inmates. The asylum officially closed on 30 September, 1946, with all inmates being transferred to the newly built Evantide Home at Sandgate, Queensland, Australia. [1][2]
Goal
The goal of this project is to create profiles, or update existing profiles, with the information provided in the downloadable PDF files available from Queensland State Archives, Brisbane, Australia.
