How are you connected to the Thuot (dit Duval) line? These are my ancestors, and it would be fun to share notes. The following has been compiled/consolidated from ongoing research for over 10 years. Several name variations and spellings within sources. (Many name variations of Goyet (i.e., goguet, Guyette, goyette, etc.)

The guidance for "dit or dite" can be found at Help:Name_Fields#Last_Name_at_Birth states:

"Dit" names should not go in the LNAB field. They can go in the Current Last Name, Other Last Name, or Nickname field, as appropriate.

BASIS FOR SUPPOSITIONS

Alexis Duval

  • Birth Est 1818-1821 Canada
(St Antoine birth/bapt. (b104) 1819 – Parents Michel Thuot (dit Duval) & Josephte Suprenant dite LaFontaine)
  • Death March 27, 1886 – Age 68 (b.1818) – Charles Mix Co., SD; buried Old St Ann’s Cemetery, Lot 21, Grave 8.

Alex enlisted in the Civil War on October 4, 1864 at the age of 43 in Avon, New York. Was discharged July 1, 1865 at Washington DC. – Puts birth year at 1821. From civil war records birth year 1821– aka Alley and Allex Duvald. (Blue eyes, dark hair and dark complexion; occupation – Laborer) From an old article biography (believed to have been published in 1894-1895 Charles Mix Co SD Newspaper) transcription provided by Edwards Researcher regarding his son Narcisse: Alex was in Canada until 21 years – puts him in US about 1842 – however, children from 1840 to 1844. Age at death was 68 making birth year 1818. (So, this is close to the 1819 record for Alexis Thuot dit Duval)

From SD article regarding his son Narcisse, Vinnie & Alex had 6 children. Narcisse was the only surviving child. Records for 5 of the 6 – Possible set of twins. Also from this article, research begun in Canada as supposition was that at least first child (Celina) had been born in Canada due to conflicting information found on census records.

From first marriage Alexis Duval & Julie Goyet had three daughters:

1. Celina Duval Born Dec. 14, 1840 in NY, died June 3, 1914. Buried in Brunswick St Jean Cemetery in Rensselaer Co., NY. Celina Married Louis/Lewis Jarvis about 1855-1859.

From Census information: 1870 West Troy, name spelled Salina; 1880 Watervleit Town, Louis not listed. 1900 census indicates 7 children/4 still living; 1890 NY Directory shows Selena Jarvis, Widow of Lewis.

Godparent/witness Relationships

Bartholemey Senecal married Felicite Gendron – St Clement October 4, 1836 Bartholemy parents – Laurent & Agathe Menard (from La Prarie - https://www.nosorigines.qc.ca/GenealogieQuebec.aspx?genealogie=Senecal_Laurent&pid=14605) Felicite parents – Jean Bapt & Madeline Fournier (Felicite born St. Joachim Chateaugay July 16, 1816)

Ambroise Leseige married Josephte Thuot (dite Duval) June 23, 1829 St Clement Ambroise Parents Ambroise Lesiege (vf) & Marie Desmaison (St Laurent de Montreal) Josette Parents - Michel Thuot dit Duval & Josette Suprenant dite Lafontaine Present - Jean Bapt Pigeon, Jean Baptiste Quevillon (friends); Michel Thuot dit Duval (father); Jean Baptiste Tejorer(?) (son ami)[1]

Several Records within St Clement with Bartholemy Senecal and Josephete Thuot as godparents.

Most of the Julie Goyets found with birth dates 1819-1823 were ruled out because marriage records were located/indicated. Most of the Alexis Duvals found during same time period were ruled out because of marriage records found.

The text from the Alexis/Vinnie marriage seems to indicate that Julie died in Montreal (ND Mtl) – However, no record of this death was found on the films.

  • A Death record index for Julia DuVal – Ft Covington (New York) was located through internet search. It is suspected that this is Julie Goyet from the Alexis marriage. Was never able to locate film regarding this index record. Apparently the index was done by John Austin who indexed a great many records in the Ft Covington area and it supposedly came from a small piece of film held by the LDS Centers.

http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyfrankl/deaths/ftcovdeaths.html Fort Covington Death Records Name Date of Death Age Occupation Cause of Death Married or Single DuVal, Julia Mar. 24, 1848 26 (alien) tuberculosis married

From St. Patrick's Church Marriages in Clinton N.Y. (Also near Ft Covington) http://www.angelfire.com/ny5/clinton/ParishRecords/StPatrick/StPatrickMarriages.htm Daniel Leseige - Parents Ambroise & Josette Duval Married Jan 9, 1871 to Maria Rondau - Parents Bell, Moyse/Rondau, Genevieve Apparently the Duvals here are from Ellensburg NY (Same general vicinity as Ft Covington)

Very much appears that it could be our Ambroise & Josephete (godparents). LDS Film 1450729 (Ft Covington) shows deaths for Rondou family with Ambroise Leseige death at age 70 (died Oct. 27, 1873, buried October 29, 1873 in Ft Covington). I have not reviewed this film.

One of the strongest links is the Josette Duval/Ambroise Leseige and the Sophie Goyet/Benjamin Boyer ties in the Fort Covington area. This lends support to the Julie DuVal actually being Julie Goyet. Additionally, Joseph Goyet & Veronique Fournier are also found in the Ft Covington area during the right timeframe for the death, as well as their son Joseph (present at 2nd marriage in Montreal).

Under Film 1450727 -- Benjamin Boyer & Sophie Goyet, along with Joseph & Veronique Fournier -- (This film covered Hogansburg 1844-1851; Ft Covington 1844-1852; Massena 1844-1852; Malone 1843 -) The 1845 census for Ft Covington also shows Benjamin & Sophie. I Did not locate Leseige here but It would seem that it is more than "pretty coincidental" that we would have the St. Clement individuals (Leseige & Goyets) showing up in Ft Covington & Hogansburg on both sides of Julie & Alexis. I did not make any copies of these items.

A fairly Intense search of the St. Clement (Beauharnois) records indicates: 1832 M2 - Joseph Goyette (son of Joseph Goyette & Veronic Fournier) married Marie Demers (daughter of Francois Demers & Marie Leucyer). Present was Paul Fournier and Francois Flavie Demers. (There was additional support for Joseph (the son) being in the Ft Covington area with children and possible 2nd or 3rd wife.)

Under Loiselle 1835 Nov. 23 M. Gendron (daughter of JB & Madeline Fournier) married FX Demers (son of FX & M. Leucyer) I think the FX stands for Francois Xavier and M. Leucyer is a pretty safe bet its one and the same as for Marie -- so probably her brother.

Next, this makes another connection of the Gendrons to the Goyettes. Notes on Barthelemy Senecal

  • m14 Oct 4 1836 -- Barthelemy Senecal Parents - def Laurent & def Agathe Menard

Felicite Gendron Parents - Jean Baptiste Gendron & Magdelaine Fournier Present: Louis Sarault (Notary); Jean Baptiste Gendron (father); Antoine Gendron (son) Magdelaine Fournier is sister of Veronique Fournier (married to Joseph Goyet) (Parents are Pierre Fournier & Veronique Robert)

(But still don't know about the Joseph Gendron & Suphronie Gendron, or how they fit in unless this Joseph is father or brother of JB. JB Parents are Joseph & Agathe Faubert.)

From the NY area research: I think in this particular case the "ill" means illegitimate whereas references to "ly" son/daughter mean legally -- don't know for sure -- just a guess based on other text in the record. So, whoever Elisabeth was, she and Joseph were not legally married (or married in the church). Further on - Dec/1848 there was reference to birth of Marcellina (parents Joseph Goyet & Margarete Thompson) -- godparents appear to be Joseph & Veronica Fornieur (close enough for Joseph & Veronic Fournier) -- Still in the Hogansburg/Ft. Covington area -- And in 1848. So -- One of two things -- Margarete is 2nd wife, or there are two Josephs -- which has happened before -- children with same names. I don't have any notes re "death for Marie Demers" but may not have zeroed in on it if there was one.

That leads us back to Julie DuVal buried in Ft. Covington which was March 1848, and we know Julie Goyet probably died in 1847/1848 timeframe. No death records found for her in Canada, even though there was a reference to a Ft Covington death about the right time frame in the St Clement records (this was illegible but did not appear to be Goyet/Duval related)

Another Probable Gendron connection. Ignace Gendron - Married to Josephte Gendron -- Their Son, Pierre married (October 25, 1836) to Emilie Thuot dit Duval - daughter of Ignace & Emilie Proteau (Michel's brother and father of Alexis) Not a Joseph Gendron & Suphronie Gendron but still a connection back to Michel Thuot dit Duval

Also (the father) Joseph Goyet’s brother Jacques – daughter Archange married Francois Gendron 1838 St Clement. This provides another tie to the Gendron connection.

Utilizing the Rivest/Loiselle & Drouin, I have been able to go back on the:

Michel Thuot dit Duval family connection to Pierre Edme Thuot (Tuot) b. 1680 d. Sept. 29, 1730 (St Antoine de Pades); Married Marie Fournier July 11, 1712 (Montreal) (Parents: Pierre Edme Thuot m M. Louise Duval and Antoine Fournier Prefontaine & M Roncery)
Joseph Goyet family connects to Pierre Goguet b. 1624 d. Apr 13, 1684 (Ile de Montreal); Married Louise Garnier (Parents Pierre Goguet & Marie Grippeau and Charles Garnier & Jeanne Labraye)

Both the Michel Thuot (m.Josette Suprenanat) & Joseph Goyet (m.Veronique Fournier) families contain the “right names” for a connection but again, all these names are pretty common, thus the “marriage record” validation (not located) should prove/disprove the connections.

If they (Alex/Julie) were married in New York or along the St Lawrence River area (St Regis), it is likely the record may never be found. Many of these early records were “lost/destroyed”. A 2019 review of Nos Origines show Laurent m. in St. Regis[2]

It is highly likely that if the marriage occurred in Canada, the records for Alexis (Thuot) Duval (and possibly Laurent (Thuot) Duval) are probably among those that were illegible in the St Antoine du Padue or St Joachim churches. Neither has shown up (married or death), on these films, but all of the other brothers/sisters have shown up.

[Pierre-]Edme was a baker, and it's possible that his marriage to Ms. Duval, the daughter of a royal official, was considered to be "moving up." This may explain why his son, Pierre-Edme (born 9 August 1681 in Tonnerre), chose to call himself "Thuot dit Duval" when he arrived in Quebec in the early 1700s.
