The first grist mill in the Glenville, Gilmer, WV area was built by William Howell in 1812 on the current site of Glenville. It was described as "a very poor excuse for a mill" but was "used to grind the corn and wheat of all the settlers for miles around." The mill built by the Stouts was described as "though a very ordinary affair was a long step in advance of Howell's mill" [1]
