McCool Name Study -> McCool Name Study - Ohio -> Early McCools of Southwest Ohio

McCool families started migrating to southwest Ohio in the early 1800s. Our goal here is to unravel the ancestry of these families, complicated by so many of them having the same name. They are all believed (so far) to descend from sons of James McCool Sr (1709-1751).

Our southwest focus areas in Ohio, which was given statehood in March 1803, are initially five counties:

  • Greene County; created 1 May 1803 from Hamilton, Ross, and Non-County area 1. Greatly reduced in 1805; reduced a bit more in 1818.
  • Highland County; created 1 May 1805 from Adams, Clermont, and Ross counties.
  • Clinton County; created 1 Mar 1810 from Highland and Warren. Gained from Highland and Warren in 1813 and 1815.
  • Miami County; created 1 Apr 1807 from Montgomery County. Lost area to Darke County in 1809 and to Shelby County in 1819.
  • Darke County; partly organized in 1809 from Miami County. Fully organized on 1 Mar 1817.
