The Ship
The Eden, a three-masted ship, was built at the Union Dock on the River Thames in 1826 by Fletcher, Son and Fearnal. She weighed 513 tons and was initially used to transport sugar to England from the West Indies.
From 1836 she was used for ten years to transport convicts to Hobart Town and Port Jackson. She later carried settlers to South Australia and New Zealand. [1]
The Voyage
At the start of this voyage to NSW, the Eden initially embarked about 30 military guards from the 96th Regiment and about 12 passengers from Deptford. About 150 convicts were then loaded from the prison hulks at Woolwich on 30 June 1840 and a further 120 at Chatham on 3 July. She departed Sheerness, England on 10th July 1840 carrying 272 convicts under the command of Henry Naylor. [2]
The voyage proceeded via Santa Cruz, where a stay of three days allowed for replenishment. She arrived in the New South Wales colony on 18th November 1840 with one convict having died en route. The journey took 131 days. [3]
The Eden was the last convict ship to bring prisoners to NSW although transportation to other colonies in Australia continued until 1868. [4]
Eden departed Port Jackson in February 1841, bound for Batavia.
Passenger List
Among the passengers were Captain Shadforth of the 57th regiment, his wife and child. [5]
There was also the military detachment which kept order during the voyage and then became part of the Colony's Regiment.
