Elijah Whaley Monson Obituaries
Died - Mr. Elijah Monson - at his home near Shadynook last Friday afternoon at 6 o'clock of Bright's disease. Mr. Monson had been in a critical condition for several days and the end had been expected at any hour for the last week. He was eighty-five years old last December. He was probably one of the best known men in this end of the county, and he also enjoyed a large acquaintance in Harrison county. He has been sick for more than a year with Bright's disease and about two months ago he took a change for the worse. At times he seemed to improve but they were of short duration. Mr. Monson has been a member of the Indian Creek Baptist church for many years. His whole aim seemed to do his Master's will and help others upward to higher attainments. He was a man that everyone liked and his death is a source of great sorrow to the whole community. A short funeral service was held at the house Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, Elder J.R. Jones, of Cynthiana, officiating. Burial at Battle Grove cemetery. He leaves an immediate family to mourn his death, a widow and eight children, two sons and six daughters. His sons are I.N. Monson, of Cynthiana, and J.L. Monson, of Shadynook, and his daughters, Mrs. J.D. Evans, of Republican, Mrs. R.F. Scott and Mrs. Lafe Monson, of Colville, Mrs. E.F. Griffin, of Headquarters, and Miss Bessie Monson who returned home some weeks ago from Birmingham, Alabama where she has been teaching for two years.[1]
Mr. Elijah Monson, a prominent and highly regarded farmer, died of the infirmities of old age at his home seven miles east of Cynthiana last Friday afternoon July 7 in his eighty sixth year. He was born in Bourbon County on December 19, 1825 and married Susan Turley in Nicholas county on March 4, 1858, his wife surviving him. He has been a member of the Indian Creek Baptist Church for a number of years, and was a splendid elder whom all regarded highly. He was the head of a prominent family, his sons and daughters being among our best people. The surviving children are: Messrs. I.N. and James I. Monson, Mrs. J.D. Evans, Mrs. B.W. Monson, Mrs. Lafe Maffett, and Mrs. R.F. Scott, all residents of this county; Mrs. Edwin Gaffin, of Nicholas County; and Miss Bessie Monson of Birmingham, Alabama. The funeral services were held at the residence Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. S.H. Burgess, and the burial occurred at Battle Grove Cemetery. The pall bearers were James Monson, Lark Monson, Thomas Jones, R.W. Rankin, J.B. Endicott, Dr. W.F. Phillips, J.W. Smith and H.F. Maffett.[2]
Mr. Elijah Monson - Cynthiana, KY., July 8. -- Mr. Elijah Monson, aged 85 years, a prosperous farmer in the eastern section of this county, died at his home late yesterday afternoon of the infirmities of old age. He has been in remarkably fine health for years until several weeks ago when he seemed to break down and the end came late yesterday. He married Miss Susan Turley of Nicholas county, and she with eight children, six girls and two boys, survive him. They had been married for fifty-four years. Mr. I.N. Monson, division deputy collector of this city, is the oldest son of Mr. Monson. The funeral will be held at the house Sunday morning at 10 o'clock and burial in Battle Grove Cemetery this city, will follow.[3]
