The Ellender Ferry crossed the Intercoastal canal in Calcasieu Parish. During the 1940s the canal was crossed by a cable ferry. A bridge was later built on a site not too distant from where the ferry crossed.

Paw Paw J.B. says that ever-so-often, a tug boat would come through the canal and cut the cable that the ferry used to guide it across. When that happened a boat had to be dispatched to retrieve the ferry that was floating aimlessly down the canal.
