About the surname - There are many different families with the surname Ellis (or variant) that are NOT related to each other in a genealogical time frame. We know this from the dna project. So far we have 7 different Haplogroups: E, G, I1, I2, J2, R1a, R1b.
Name Variations - Alce , Ales , Alis , Allace , Alles , Alless , Allis , Alliss , Eles , Elice , Elis , Elles , Ellice , Ellis , Els , Elys, Ioels.
What this project is about - This is a Wikitree Y DNA project for the surname Ellis and its variants. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect. It is meant to be a companion to the Offical Project website.
Get involved - Only men with the surname Ellis (usually) can be tested for this DNA project. Female family members or "proxies" can be involved in the project. Visit the offical project website to join the project.
Why only Y-DNA - The DNA project uses only Y-DNA. This is because, in Western culture, the surname is passed down the male line. We can use y-dna to follow the surname and trace distinct family lines.
Categories - Each male Ellis profile will be categorized with the basic [[Category:Ellis_Y-DNA]] , which is the highest level category for the project. When at least two of the descendants of a particular man have been ydna tested all descendants will be assigned a new category with the name defining their group, ie. [[Category:Ellis_Y-DNA_J2_Group_1]]. The high level category will then be removed from the profile.
Researchers - Please contact the project leader, Dawn Ellis, if you have any questions or would like to get involved.

- EKA: This group had submitted information that they might descend from Ellis Ellis, b. c. 1660, m. Lydia Humphrey. R1b Groups 17 & 19 submitted the same information. All three groups cannot descend from Ellis Ellis, though, and more research is required to determine which is the correct family.
