Welcome to the Orphan Trail One
The Orphan Trail One (OT1) covers English profiles for the period 1700 to 1957. It is divided into two stages: 1838 - 1957 (stage 1) and 1700 -1837 (stage 2). You will usually be asked to improve one or two English Orphan profiles for each time period.
You will be assigned a Trailblazer to help you. Trailblazers are busy people and there is a lot of demand for their help so we ask you to make the orphan trail your priority for the short time that it should take you to complete it. It is important to contact your Trailblazer regularly and keep them updated with your progress.
You will learn:
- How to structure profiles in a simple way that others can understand.
- How to find and cite reliable sources from the free resources that are available online such are Familysearch and FreeReg.
- How to use the General Registration Index (GR0) and Free BMD to find birth, marriage and death records.
- How to find census records and make the best use of them in your research, for example noting registration districts and occupations.
- How to find and cite reliable sources from the free resources that are available online such as Familysearch and FreeReg.
- How to create a new profile.
You will start to develop skills in:
- Writing a simple biography
- Comparing records to evaluate whether the records relate to the correct person.
- Editing the data fields of profiles according to the England Profile Standards and Wikitree's Style Rules
- Inline sourcing.
- Adding categories
- The use of Research Notes
- The use of Headings and Sub-headings
- The use of commonly-used stickers and templates
You will be made aware of:
- WikiTree help pages
- G2G
When you have completed OT1 you will be expected to join an England Project Profile Improvements Team or England Counties Team. You can join more than one team if you wish and your trailblazer will help you to decide which is best for you. You will also be offered to opportunity to continue on to England Project Orphan Trail Two
If you do not continue working on your OT1 profiles and fail to keep in touch with your trailblazer you will be paused and if you do not return within 2 months we will remove your England Project Badge.
