Welcome to the England Project Tangled Families Team

This team works raise the standard of English profiles on WikiTree. The primary focus is to seek out and improve English profiles that have have major problems.

The key words for this team are Collaboration, Team Work, Accuracy, Enjoyment and last but not least Fun.

For ease of collaboration, and for the camaraderie and fun, being an active Discord member is preferable, but it is not obligatory. If this team interests you, please drop a note to the team leader or send a message via Discord. If you are not already on Discord and would like to join us please let and England Leader know and we will send an invite to you.

Our Goals

  1. To Identify tangled families
  2. To untangle problem families
  3. To find names of unknowns
  4. To seek out and merge duplicate profiles
  5. To reduce the number of unmerged matches
  6. To clean up old gedcoms that have been abandoned or forgotten
  7. To improve profiles by finding sources, writing biographies, and cleaning up suggestions.

Tangled Families

"Tangled families" which can be tricky to untangle. Sometimes one profile can hold 3 generations in the wrong places, and have cousins mixed in with the children. If you find one and are becoming stuck or confused please don't struggle. Take a step back and request a new set of eyes on the profile. Sometimes you may need to ask for an Arborist to come and help or take over. Some of these may turn out to be fictitious or cross continents, so they need very careful researching :) Merges can also not be what they seem, so when checking for duplicates please be very careful to look at all the details not just the name :) We will only be working on England profiles. If a tangled family crosses continents please seek advice before disconnecting or making major alterations. Thank you :) If you do happen to make a mistake (we all do at some point) please don't worry. Errors can be fixed :)

Does anyone use this category? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:England%2C_Unsourced_Tree I am guessing it dates back to before better standards for pre1700 and pre1500 profiles, before an unsourced family tree allowed us to label profiles unsourced. There are currently 2 pre-1500 profiles in it (both labelled unsourced). I am wondering if the category should be removed and the whole category deleted. If people use if and pull from it that's great and but if this is now a forgotten/ignored category, perhaps it's time has been served and it can go away? -- I first asked this on Discord before I realized it was listed on this page, which may mean my question has an answer and yes, the category is used.

Hi Wendy - I think it could be deleted. Nobody seems to be using it, and I personally have never looked at it until now. Thanks for noticing!
It is now down to 1 profile and no one has spoken up that they want this category. Could remove it from the above, I can ask in the pre1500 channel to have the category removed, and then I can get back to categorisation to have the category deleted

If any of our England Arborists (or anyone feeling brave) would like to have a go at untangling, we currently have 100 profiles in the "Conflated profiles" category (see above). This category is meant to be temporary, until someone comes along to sort the family(s). Some of these may actually be easy, but the early profiles may require some skill to get them sorted. It's doubtful that we can "zero out" this category, but if we could knock the number down a bit, that would be great! If you do manage to sort a family, don't forget to remove the category and/or template ;) Many thanks in advance!
It would be helpful to add a subcategory for England here https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Unknowns.... (many unknowns don't get put in this category....but there is this big list I'm trying to work on...) ...and I find them here and there as I'm working on Unknowns and orphans and profiles without locations and would like to have somewhere to list them to know that someone with more expertise working on England records than I have would find them....I used to send them to Wendy Sullivan who was for a time Head of the England project.... but she isn't active anymore....Just a few thoughts...from Pam Anderson Smith, Team Leader, Unknowns

There's also the page England Unknowns which you can use.

But I might not know enough to place it in a shire etc....can I leave a comment and let someone figure out how to place it??

Sorry, I might have misunderstood. Ah you asking about profiles where the individuals name has "Unknown" portions, or profiles where the county of birth, marriage, or death is unknown?

I was answering re the former case. You can always leave a comment, or even add research notes, whether you have found something or not, explaining what you have looked at, and any relevant sources.

Are you thinking of the various unknown country reports? https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:England%2C_Regional_and_County_Statistics_Page#Unknown_County ? Between these and the England unknowns [mentioned by Roy], are these already accounted for?

Is there no way of removing from the list those profiles that have already been sorted out? Some profiles that have no source whatsoever apart from commercial sites which all too often are "sourced" by hearsay ttrees,or from unsourced gedcoms for which there is nothing in any freely available reliable source and sometimes not even in any commercial site should be removed or changed to reliable, freely sourcaeable profiles. The time wasted trying to source unsourceable profiles is time that could be used for sourceable profiles that are reliable and have freely available sources.

Good point Edwin,

It would be helpful if after trying to find verifiable primary/secondary sources if we could add a Research Note explaining our efforts and where we’ve looked, adding the four tildes ~~~~ so stamping our i.d. date and time, as we do on the Unknown profiles.
