Definition

An English Classical Music Composer is a musician producing concert , stage or liturgical works who was born in England or like Maude Valerie White was born abroad of English parents and was counted a British Citizen. This does not include non-English composers working in England for part of their artistic career, however eminent (e.g., Haydn, Handel, Mendelssohn)
The Mission of the subproject is to assist in the management of the profiles which represent composers who were born in England or who are English-born-abroad and their immediate families and ancestors. Some composers are badged as Notables. English composers have been active during all the different historical periods in Western music, and this will be reflected in the categorisation structure.

Goals

  • To identify and gather (by categorisation) WikiTree profiles of English classical music composers.
  • To create a basic profile for a composer if he/she does not already have one - then research and develop that profile
  • To search for them in the England & Wales censuses
  • To add their bibliography (in a list) to their profiles
  • To create a linked freespace page to contain their bibliography if they were a prolific composer
  • To determine which profiles are to be managed by the England Project
  • To place a sticker on the profiles to be managed by other individuals/projects
  • To continue their lineage by at least two generations to grandparents and grandchildren

This subproject should serve as detailed refutation of the comment made in 1904 by German music critic Oskar AH Schmitz (1873-1931) that England was "das Land ohne Musik" (the land without music).
