Enniskillen Castle, County Fermanagh, Ireland
Enniskillen Castle was first built on an island in the River Erne in County Fermanagh c.1428 by the Maguire chieftains of Ulster. From their base in Lisnaskea, County fermanagh, the Maguire chieftains ruled from the later years of the 13th century to the early 17th century In Ulster. [1]
Hugh Maguire built a castle at Enniskillen in 1428; in 1439, the Annals of Ulster record the captivity of Tomas Óg Maguire in his own castle in Enniskillen by Domnall Maguire ‘the Freckled’. [2]
Enniskillen Castle was besieged by British forces led by Captain John Dowdall early in 1594. The castle fell to the British after a short siege. The Irish unsuccessfully besieged the British holding the castle later that year, the defendants were relieved by British reinforcements.
Enniskillen Castle fell to the Irish in 1595.
Niall Garve O'Donnell, a British supporter, took the castle from the Irish in the summer of 1602.
In 1607 Captain William Cole was given command of the castle. He remodelled and refurbished the castle adding the Watergate, the riverside tower in 1609 on the south side.
Enniskillen Castle was unsuccessfully besieged by Rory Maguire during the Irish Rebellion of 1641.
In 1796, Enniskillen castle was remodelled as a barracks in response to the arrival of French forces in Ireland in support of rebel Irish republican group, The Society of United Irishmen. [3]
In 1853, Castle Barracks became headquarters for the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot. The Inniskillings moved to their new St Lucia Barracks, County Omagh in 1875. In 1881, they were amalgamated to became the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.
In 1939, the Enniskillen barracks became headquarters of the Territorials, the North Irish
Inn 1950, Enniskillen Barracks became a council depot.
Enniskillen Castle is now open to the public as a heritage centre.

Afterwards, when Henry Ua Neill heard that Mag Uidhir was in custody, he mustered many forces and went to Port-abla-Faelain against Philip and Domnall, with whom Mag Uidhir was in custody. Mag Uidhir was liberated that day and hostages were given for him, namely, his own son, Edmond Mag Uidhir and the daughter of Mag Eochagain, that is, the wife of Mag Uidhir and many other hostages. And the castle of Inis-Ceithlenn (namely, Inis-Sgeillen) was given to Domnall Mag Uidhir the Freckled and so on.
