Our Goals
This is a One Name Study to collect together in one place everything about the Faw surname and the variants of that name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join our study to help make it a valuable reference point for people studying lines that cross or intersect.
While we love oral history, we strive to find original sources to support our claims. Where oral history and sources differ, we try to contact the profile managers to discuss the matter privately before making special notations on the profile in question. It is important to remember that there can be and often are errors for both oral history and sources and extra care should be taken when making changes and updates. For example, oral history sometimes mixes up names, birth dates, and birth locations while death records are filled out by relatives or friends whom may not know the intimate details of the persons life including their parental information. Birth records may have been delay filed resulting in inaccurate birth dates. Lastly, birth records do not gurantee the father listed is indeed the biological father.

The Faw Surname
Origins
From the Dictionary of American Family Names (2013, Oxford University Press), the surname Faw is considered the Americanized spelling of South German Pfau. A nickname for someone thought to resemble a peacock in some way, or a habitational name for someone who lived at a house or tavern distinguished by the sign of a peacock.
The current Faw research and oral history tells a more interesting story of the surname. It must be noted that there is little evidence to support these claims and of course if you have any evidence to add it would be wonderful if you could share.
Tracing back through time, Faw was born out of Pfau or Pfauw when our ancestors arrived to Colonial America in the early to mid 1700's. Note that Pfauw was considered at this time to mean "bird of peace" and there are a few different versions of exactly how the change occurred. From a simple phonetic transcription error during the immigration process to a local sign painter that misunderstood the name Pfau and printed “Faw” for one of our early ancestors and businessman Abraham Pfau. Perhaps the most interesting version occurred due to a change of heart after rebellion and turmoil in Switzerland causing the loss of a Castle and surrounding territory.
From approximately 1444 to the 1700's, Pfauw would remain the primary spelling of Faw. The Pfauw surname is found in a few surprising places during this time. The most famous is a stained glass window from around the 1590's that displays ten Coat of Arms for ten Swiss families. The window is still in one piece after all this time and can be seen in the Reformed Church Mönthal located in the village Mönthal in the Swiss canton of Aargau.
Prior to the mid 1400's, Pfauw was known as Falkenstein; specifically, Graf (Count) von Falkenstein. This may be translated as "bird of prey on a rock." Why the surname change?
Amy and Linda Faw compiled an interesting story that can be read in further detail in the Faw Family History book, see the publication section. A short summary is provided here.
Castle Farnsburg built between 1319 and 1342 would change hands from time to time. In 1366, the Bishop of Basel gave the Farnsburg family the right to own all the territory. Graf Farnsburg controlled this area until 1418 when no male heir was present. It is said the castle and lands were given to his daughter Clarianna whom married Graf Hans Freiherr von Falkenstein.
In 1444, while Hans was feudal lord, the Swiss villagers rose up against German and Austrian Graf's. They believed they were deprived the pleasures of liberty and prosperity. It is said that in July of 1444, the villagers gave Graf von Falkenstein notice to vacate or the castle would be burned down. In August of 1444, the villagers surrounded the castle and for three days they kept up the battle until the Graf was forced to surrender or flee. The Graf chose to flee to the Rhine river and escape to France.
In France it is reported that Hans had a change of heart over the ordeal and to complement this, he decided to change his family name. Thus, the original Faw surname was born when Hans changed his family name from Falkenstein (bird of prey on a rock) to Pfauw (bird of peace).
Years later, in 1455, Thomas Falkenstein, a brother to Hans, would gain possession of Castle Farnsburg. However, in 1461, Castle Farnsburg was sold to the City of Basel in order to pay the debts of Thomas Falkenstein. It would be used as the courthouse of Basel until 1798 when it was burned during a Rebellion of the people. Now all that remains are ruins.
Distinct Branches
There are several branches of the Faw family today. Most connect back to North Carolina around the late 1700's and early 1800's. However, a few branches are either distinctly different with a different origin or the connection must happen further back than known records. A few are still being researched as the connection has not been discovered yet.
- Jacob Pfau
- Researchers agree that Jacob Pfau is the common ancestor for the majority of Faw descendants in the United States. His legacy spawned several branches that have since migrated all across the United States.
- Jonathan Faw Jr.
- This branch connection is currently being researched. Most likely related to Jacob Pfau via descendants. The Faw surname in this branch has officially died with the male descendants and lives on through living descendants from Faw daughters with several surname changes having occurred.
- Frederick Faw
- Current research and living descendants show that this Faw branch originated in Waldtann, Wurtemberg, Germany with the surname Fach with descendants living in Canada. During the 1800's, Frederick Faw changed the surname from Fach to Faw for convenience of the public in Canada.
- Phillip Anton Faw
- Brickwall being researched. Could he be related to Frederick Faw from Wurtemberg Germany?
- Joseph Faw
- Brickwall being researched. Appears to originate from Russian Empire. Limited information.
- Larkin Faw
- Brickwall being researched.
- James Faw
- Brickwall being researched. May be related to Larkin Faw
Name Variations
Digital records have made researching genealogical information easier over the years; however, there are still issues finding specific records for a number of reasons. Primarily through transcription errors followed closely by homophones. If you are having trouble with indexing sites (e.g. FamilySearch) try out different combinations below that have been documented in various records.
For research purposes (digtally transcribed sources, etc.) the common variations of Faw both historical and through various misspellings are listed below. In addition, some variations are homophones and others are purely speculative as they may actually reference entirely different genealogical lines. Notes are made where appropriate.
- Historical Spellings

- Common Transcription Errors in Digitized Records
- These may represent different genealogical families or simple transcription mistakes. The tables below summarize the instances where a known Faw family member was incorrectly attributed another name.

Possible Duplicate Familes
At present there are several seemingly duplicate genealogical lines on WikiTree due to various imports of GEDCOM files with slight variations in birth date, birth location, and/or surname spelling that we could use help to source, distinguish, and consolidate.
- Pfau-49
- This family line's descendants have been sourced digitally (census, birth, death, marriage, probate, etc. records) with Family Search and Find A Grave records as well as a family history book, The Faw Family Record, when available and are directly available through the corresponding profiles or accessed from the publications section below. The ancestors of this line are not adequately sourced due to lack of digitized records and limited documentation outside of the family history book. They are considered speculative at best with one notable exception linking back to Switzerland with a church stained glass piece donated by Pfauw-4. The connections in-between though remain circumspect.
- Pfau-105
- A family line that appears to represent the same family line above albeit with variations of spellings of names as well as birth locations. Given the lack of historical records and nature of dealing with records in this time frame, it is unclear which is more accurate.
- Pfautz-2
- A family line with a very similar last name and to an extent similar family members exists on wikitree. At this time it is unclear if they are exactly the same with the last name varying as it usually does in historical references (Pfauw, Pfau, Faw versus Pfautz, Foutz, Fouts) along with the spellings of the family members names or whether it or this line contains some speculative and perhaps false information.
Unconnected Profiles
A list of unconnected Faw profiles can easily be generated live using the following link through WikiTree.
Questionable Profiles
These profiles need additional research to confirm their connection to the Faw family line.
- Lillie Berry (Faw) Kirkland
- A "new" Faw daughter not generally referenced in any currently known Faw documentation
- Amalia Maria (Faw) Engels
- A "new" Faw daughter not generally referenced in any currently known Faw documentation
Brickwalls and Unsourced Profiles
These profiles are either not yet connected to any main branch of the Faw family line or they could use some help with verifiable sources.
- Rachel Faw
- This family member was born about 1845 and died in 1877. They will be difficult to connect because it is unclear whether the maiden name is Faw or the married name is Faw. Additionally, they are buried in England.
- Nathan Faw
- This family member was born about 1867 and died in 1914. They were Jewish and buried in England.
- Richard Faw
- The head of this family married in Texas. It appears he has a business in Texas as well. No other records have been found to help link him to the Faw family tree yet.
- James Franklin Faw
- The head of this family is listed as the grandson of Emily. Of the known children, four possibilites stand out. Child of her daughter Jane whom may have died early (unknown at this time). Child of her son Rufus and an unknown spouse. Although he marries a younger woman later (whom could not have birthed James) and James is not listed in their census records. Third her son Thomas may have had a son earlier. Lastly, none of the above which leaves unknown children of Emily or other relatives.
- Recently a marriage record for J F Faw and his wife shows his parents as Tom and Kate Faw. More research is needed to determine if this is Thomas Faw the son of Emily and another possible wife.
- Joseph Faw
- This family originates from the Russian Empire during the 1880s in what is now Estonia.
- James Faw
- This family is not yet connected to the main Faw family tree. Born about 1837 in North Carolina.
- Larkin Faw
- This family is not yet connected to the main Faw family tree. Family members from the 1880 and 1900 census records have not been added yet. Awaiting more research.
- Larkin Faw may have family members listed in the 1860 and 1870 census records; however, as no relationship is defined in those records, more research is needed before adding the additional connections.
- Larkin Faw may be the father of Lee Faw due to inconsistencies with birth year reporting in the census records. More research is needed to verify whether this is the same Lee Faw before adding Larkin as the father.
- Unknown Faw
- Dayna Lynn Honea Faw in household with Zachary Anthony Faw and Tyler Holaand Faw
- Unclear who her husband is
- Jerry Faw
- connected to the tree via parents, need sources to support add
- Sandy (Faw) Szakach
- connected to the tree via parents, need sources to support add

FindAGrave Records
An ambitious project was started in order to match each FindAGrave record to a Faw family WikiTree profile and to reconcile the data as needed with supporting evidence. Digitized records (census, marriage, birth and death) are collected in support of this project and are available alongside each FindAGrave record that is matched.
The data for this project is consolidated and summarized in a spreadsheet that is publicly available from the publications section. The Faw Index Google Spreadsheet can be downloaded, used in research and publications, and redistributed freely as long as the author is given credit with an accompanying source citation.
Records that we were unable to verify or cross-reference will be listed below for others to help assist us with.
This data can be used to perform further analysis such as the following:
- Faw Name Geographic Distribution Through Time
- Faw Life Expectancy
Unmatched FindAGrave Records
These are the last records (out of more than 1400!) that have not yet been added to any Faw WikiTree profiles or connected to a Faw family branch on FindAGrave.
A new Faw or proper maiden surname WikiTree profile may need to be created for each one and if possible link them to their family branch on FindAGrave.
If a record is determined to not represent a Faw family member, suggestions for correction should be made on the FindAGrave website and the item can be annotated or removed from this list.

DNA Studies
All tests will give us a better understanding of our heritage and help trace our ancestral line through time. Specifically, autosomal DNA tests will facilitate cousin connections and family line verification while the Y-DNA test can be used to confirm whether the various Faw family branches are in fact related. See the additional resources section for more information.
Additionally, there are several DNA Project groups hosted by the company Family Tree DNA that can be utilized to assist these efforts.
- Germany-YDNA Project Group
- This project group is for everyone who knows they or their ancestor in the past have German ancestry
- Farr DNA Project Group
- This project group encapsulates the Faw surname and several other variants as part of the study
- Pfau DNA Project Group
- This project group only encapsulates the Pfau surname
- Poe DNA Project Group
- This project group has been added due to a Poe Connection revealed during Y-DNA testing
- Joining this group could help us determine possible ancestor connections as well as the evolution of both surnames
Joining any of these groups and participating will facilitate DNA test comparisons to confirm the various Faw family tree branches. The Y-DNA test is the most useful for comparisons in these DNA project groups.
Several Faw family members and close relatives that have participated in autosomal DNA testing have elected to upload their DNA to GEDMatch. This is a free service that facilitates comparing your DNA to others regardless of which service used to perform the test. Any GEDMatch associated with WikiTree profiles allows for quick comparisons to verify whether you have matching DNA to a particular family line.
The Father of the United States Faws
The vast majority of known living Faw's in the United States are believed to descend from Jacob Pfau.
Y-DNA testing shows, with 99% confidence, there is a common ancestor for three recent Y-DNA testers within 14 generations. Two of the three are listed as direct descendants of Jacob Pfau, while the third is a direct Poe descendant.
The oldest sourced and verifiable ancestors for the three testers are the following:
- Jacob Poe born about 1795
- Note that the tester shares a genetic distance of 3 between the Faw testers
- Jacob Faw born about 1771
- Note that the tester shares a genetic distance of 3 with Poe tester and a genetic distance of 6 with the other Faw tester
- Isaac Faw born about 1773
- Note that the tester shares a genetic distance of 3 with Poe tester and a genetic distance of 6 with the other Faw tester
Of the three profiles listed above, two are suspected to be the sons of or at least directly related to Jacob Pfau, the possible Father of Faw's for the United States.
While not impossible, the age of Jacob Pfau at the time of birth for his purported sons, Jacob, Isaac, and Adam is unusual. He would have been around 50 years old at the time.
Y-DNA testing has shown that it is possible for Jacob Pfau to be the common ancestor of descendants from his purported sons Jacob and Isaac; however, the genetic distance for Y-DNA between the two is 6. This leaves open the possibility of additional generations between Jacob Pfau and descandants Jacob and Isaac. Meaning that it is possible Jacob Pfau is not the father, but rather the grandfather, great grandfather, or even 2nd great grandfather of Jacob and Isaac.
At the very least, the above Y-DNA tests indicate that there are some interesting overlaps of Faw's and Poe's at some point in the 1700's. It is not clear at this time whether the common ancestor ultimately would be a Poe, Faw, or some other unknown surname before the 1700's.
The possible missing generation could allow for the Poe or Faw connection via migrations and separations of families at ports along the Eastern Coast with names being changed phonetically on arrival...perhaps two brothers arriving to port at different times (years apart?). One migrating to PA and another to NC.
In summary, the Y-DNA results prove relatedness, but raise questions about how Faw's and Poe's, at least three specific lines from two different geographic regions, are related and whether there might be one or more missing generations between the believed common ancestor Jacob Pfau and the rest as well as whether the ancestral surname is Poe or Faw or something else entirely. It can be said with confidence that research has shown both Faw's and Poe's living in both PA and NC in close proximity during the late 1700s when census records began. Whether they were close cousins or directly related cannot be proved at this time.
Further work in finding additional Poe and Faw descendants to test their Y-DNA may help sort out whether there are indeed missing generations. Additionally, there are various records at the local and county level for PA and NC, such as tax and land records, that can be researched to find more possible connections between Faw's and Poe's and potentially missing generations.
The Poe Connection
The Poe connection started when a Y-111 DNA test match from Family Tree DNA revealed that a gentleman from Pennsylvania with the surname Poe matched two gentleman from North Carolina with the surname Faw in April of 2019. A few interesting observations and facts concerning the surnames.
- The surnames are both short and prone to transcription errors and phonetic changes
- There are “Faw” records in Pennsylvania dating from the Revolutionary War up until the 1790 and 1800 census records that have yet to be connected to any known Faw branch
- There are "Poe" records in North Carolina dating from the late 1700's to early 1800's that have yet to be connected to any known Poe branch.
- Similar names passed down the generations, e.g. Jacob (albeit some of these names were popular in general during this period)
- A genetic distance of 3 from the Y-111 DNA results indicates a genealogical connection
- Most matches at this level are related as 9th cousins or closer, and over half will be 5th or more recent cousins.
- Mathematically, there is a 50% chance the two gentlemen share 6th generation ancestors, 90% 10th generation ancestors, 95% 11th generation ancestors, and finally 99% 14th generation ancestors.
- Both gentlemen have sourced family trees and thus we can safely eliminate 6 generations based solely on historical records.
For reference, the two open family trees:
Based on the above, it would seem there is a decent chance that Poe, like Faw, may be a derivative of Pfau or Pfauw and subtly changed over the years. Whether from immigration upon arrival, or when written for historical record based on phonetic sounding and pronunciation.
More historical research and additional DNA testing of Faw and Poe family members from both North Carolina and Pennsylvania may assist in solving this mystery. If you are interested in helping, please reach out using the comments or private message capability of this page.
