Commentary

Despite its title, not all fifty colonists include their origins.

The author's source citation practice leaves much to be desired; from the author's "Introduction":

"At the end of each monograph is a list of general sources. I do not choose to clutter the material with superfluous details, explanatory notes and references that make reading tedious. A baptismal record obviously comes from a parish record and one certainly doesn't need a page number when the entries are in chronological order. The reader is expected to be competent enough to locate any of this material from the information given, should verification ever be desired."

Some of the material also appears to be from previously published sources. Again, from the introduction:

"Some of the material already long in print has been transcribed more or less verbatum. There is no intention to claim otherwise. The only reason for repeating the material is to provide continuity of the several generations for the reader and to provide a complete account of a colonist or his ancestor."

The author ends his introduction with "I hope that others will more or less approve the format and follow it." This critic hopes people won't. Robert Charles Anderson's Great Migration series is a far better model to follow.

The "good" news is that the author gives readers permission to copy from this work.

Here is a EE styled citation (note author is not part of the title, and "Fifty" not "50" is the title's first word.

Well that's embarrassing. Thanks for catching that Gregory.

Agree with the commentary, Jillaine! Threfall's sources are either unavailable or difficult to find online.
