The University of Virginia (UVA), founded and designed by Thomas Jefferson, only purchased and owned one enslaved individual. The laborers were enslaved by the area plantation owners as well as the professors at UVA. The students of UVA were not allowed to bring their slaves. Enslaved individuals were rented to UVA during the period of 1817-1870. This project is to locate descendants of the free and enslaved laborers. [1][2] [3] [4]
