About First Burial Ground

The First Burial Ground (also known as the Park Street Burial Ground) is the oldest burial ground in Woburn, Massachusetts, in use from 1642 until 1794. The earliest recorded burial in the Town Records dates to 1662. However, the oldest gravestone still standing (2021) belongs to Deacon Josias Convers (1689/90).[1]
The first survey of the burial ground was conducted by town clerk Nathan Wyman in 1847. His list included information on 365 individuals, however the published results were mostly limited to names and dates.[1][2][3] William Richard Cutter (1847-1918) conducted a second, more comprehensive survey of the cemetery in 1866, publishing a transcript of 274 complete epitaphs, Transcript of Epitaphs in Woburn First and Second Burial Grounds, in 1890.[1] The epitaph numbers used by Cutter are referenced in the Table of Interments below, e.g., "Ep(128.)."
There are doubtless many Woburnites whose burials here remain undocumented. William Cutter recounts that during the nineteenth century when "the wall and town pound were built on the western side of the yard, several skeletons were exhumed. The earliest interments are thought to have been in this part."[4] A contemporary overseer from the Woburn Cemetery Association observed that while the affluent may have had the resources even to have "quality stone" for their marker shipped from the "Old Country," poorer residents may have resorted to using wood, or even "tearing shingles from their own house." Today, where even some stone markers are cracked, broken or gone, the much less durable markers have long since decayed into oblivion. This makes it all the more important to document what remains.
In 2017, the Woburn Historical Society installed a Gravesite Map and Legend on site to enable visitors to lookup and locate gravestones within the cemetery. The grave numbers from the Legend are referenced in the table below, e.g., "Map(544)."

In order to be included in the table, the person must first have a WikiTree profile, which should be tagged with: "[[Category: First Burial Ground, Woburn, Massachusetts]]." They must also be listed in Cutter's Transcript of Epitaphs in Woburn First and Second Burial Grounds, and / or in the Map Legend, or the profile must contain another legitimate source saying that they were buried here. Note that some "Find A Grave" memorials may cite burial in the First Burial Ground, but contain no actual proof (e.g., a gravestone photo).
