WILLEM II VAN TEYLINGEN

Adjust DOB to 1180 (about) Teylingen, Graafschap Holland, Heilige Roomse Rijk (Holy Roman Empire) (1101-1579)
Enter Death at 4 March 1244 Teylingen, Graafschap Holland, Heilige Roomse Rijk (Holy Roman Empire) (1101-1579) [uncertain location, others suggest Slot Brederode]

CAUTION
Various men were identified by the name Willem van Teylingen during Holland's medieval era. Appellations such as Willem I, II or III were not then in use, but have been assigned by modern historians to distinguish one from another.
When reviewing the available contemporaneous records, it is not always possible to determine which of these men is referenced by any particular document.

Most accounts draw heavily from a detailed review along with graphics for a Willem van Teylingen as published in the NL Leeuw in 1926 by Dr. Henri Obreen. This review pertains primarily to Willem II van Teylingen as he is now commonly referenced. His father is not identified by name, although footnote 14 alludes to another Willem van Teylingen appearing in an older record from 1174. The graphic also identifies a third Willem van Teylingen, who dies before 1284. There appear to be no historical records that explicitly and directly document the relationships between these men, whether as father and son or otherwise. No two of them are ever referenced in the same primary source document.

In the graphic from this 1926 publication, the dates 1198 and 1244 appear beneath the name of Willem van Teylingen. The year 1198 is preceded by "verm.," indicating a first mention. In popular genealogy websites, the year 1198 is commonly presented as his year of birth. This is clearly mistaken. Moreover, it seems probable that the event recorded in 1198 involving Wilhelmus de Teillinga actually pertains to the older Willem van Teylingen who first appeared in 1174.

Nico Groen describes this as a family reunion (based around dedicating a chapel), with an entourage similar to those who attended an event from 1182.

https://oudlisse.nl/nieuws/lisse-825-jaar-door-een-oorkonde-uit-1198/

The apparent confusion on this point also casts a cloud over other "facts" that are claimed for Willem II, both within this widely referenced document but especially elsewhere. Obreen did not attain a clear understanding of the identity of Willem II's father, and so likely conflated the two men when reviewing the records during the period when their lives may have overlapped.

With respect to Willem II van Teylingen, the first confirmed record for him is from 1205, when a Wilhelmus de Teilinge is referenced as the brother of Dirk Drossaard "zijn broer Theodricus". So this cannot be Willem I. This document, presumably dating from his adult life, points to his having been born at least by 1185 if not earlier.
(Are there any documents clearly establishing Dirk as the son of Willem I?)

With respect to the overlap in their lives, authors most commonly contend (whether accurate or not) that his father Willem I died in 1215 and was buried in 1217. So there is a potentially extended period between 1198 and 1217 where some documents cannot be definitively assigned to the father versus the son without further investigation.

However, the folks at Medlands have noted a document pertaining to his daughter Christina van Brederode dating from 1203 suggesting that he was deceased by this time.

"The absence of Christina’s father in the body of the document indicates that he was deceased."
https://fmg.ac/Projects/MedLands/DUTCH%20NOBILITY.htm#_Toc62491880

If confirmed, all references to a Wilhelmus van Teylinghen being present at an event after this date would belong to Willem II. Ben de Keijzer appears to find this evidence credible. In "Van de Woerd -- Van Foreest," he makes reference to Machteld as the daughter "van Willem van Teylingen (1174, 1198-1203)," where the enclosed dates represent his view on confirmed mentions for Willem I. However, it may still be that in his mind, other records after 1203 simply remain ambiguous.

BIOGRAPHY
Willem II van Teylingen was likely born about 1180 in Sassenheim, to Willem I van Teylingen and possibly but not with any certainty, to Agniese Ottensdr. van Bentheim.
Willem had at least two siblings, Dirk van Brederode (Dirk Drossaard) and Gerrit van Heemskerk. Some propose adding Arent, Machtelt, Hugo, and/or Simon.
He is widely claimed to have married to Agnes Willemsdr. van Lijnden, the daughter of Willem van Lynden and Christina van Brederode, who was born about 1203 in Lienden.
At least by 1217, if not by some earlier date, he becomes the Lord of Teylingen following the death of his father.

In any event, Willem fathered (at least) three children including Dirk, Simon, and Florijs/Florens. It is commonly asserted that these children were born in the 1220's, but no records exist to confirm that. Still other children have also been proposed, including Ada , Willem III, Hadewich, (Sophia), and Beatrice/x.

see Ben De Keijzer, "Borgstellingen in 1227, 1261 en 1266 -- Van Egmond, Haarlem en Waterland (Persijn – Putten)" (May 2024)

There is some speculation [page since modified] that Willem was first married to a woman named Hadewych.
Eg: https://www.genealogieonline.nl/en/kwartierstaat-dekker/I535386.php
(It would indeed be odd in this era for someone to first marry later in life, as with Agnes.)
Hadewich is now a focal point for newer claims that a woman by that name was the mother of Dirk Drossaert. (I've been advised that DNA research published in 2023 discounts that idea.).
Still others point to several older sources associating Willem with Oda van Wassanaer.

[Above page now refers to this other WvT x Oda who died in 1284]

Willem is referenced as a knight in 1223. He was also recognized with the title of nobilis viri as of 1241. (nobilis viri is latin honorific for noble man)

He died in 1244.

TEYLINGEN ORIGINS
Teylingen is first mentioned in the 10th C. in registers of the St. Maartenskerk of Utrecht summarizing assets of the cathedral. A place named "Taglingi" was mentioned, situated near Lisse, Warmond, Oegstgeest and Poelgeest. 'Dit taglingi' would later be corrupted to Teylingen. It was not before 1143 that the name Teylingen reappears, this time by reference to Gerhardo de Teilinc (Gerard van Teylingen).

Teylingen (and Brederode) were castles that flanked a narrow strip between the North sea and the Haarlemmermeer that protected the cities of Holland from invasion over land.
Early in the 13th century, the original castle (Slot Teylingen) was built by Willem (II) van Teylingen as a water castle with a ring wall that was later expanded with a front section. Effective control over the castle reverted to the Counts of Holland after 1282 when there were no direct heirs to Teylingen line. But for a time into the 14th century, certain descendants continued to occupy the castle. The castle later served as a hunting lodge on a timber farm belonging to the counts of Holland and feudal lords were given an official title of woodcutter with management responsibilities.

HADEWIG
Was Hadewig the name of Willem's first wife?
Willem was certainly an adult by 1205 (if not before) when his earliest confirmed mention appears.
Why would he wait another twenty years before marrying and starting a family in that era of shortened lifespans?

Perhaps he didn't:

Gezin van Hadewich von Haarlem

Zij zijn getrouwd rond 1210.

Back in 1203, there was a gathering of considerable prominence, including as a witness Willem van Teylingen, but also Agniese and Hadewig van Teylingen.

("datum 1303" is likely a typo; and this record may be found in the Van Haarlem transcription archives, but with "Agnes en Hadewig van Teilingen")

Which Willem van Teylingen was this? (their lives overlapped at this time)
Willem was listed second and ahead of everyone but Ada van Holland. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Holland-2225
So this was likely the elder Willem (I).

And who were these two women?
Arnold Zuiderent indicates that C. Hoek believed they were his wife and daughter in law.

In een akte van 1203 komen een Agneize en Hadewych van Teylingen voor, die door Hoek als vrouw en schoondochter van Willem (I) van Teylingen geïnterpreteerd worden.

http://www.zuiderent.ch/kwst/gen25.htm

Of course, Agniese would have been Agniese van Bentheim, the wife of the elder Willem.
So then, who was Hadewig and was she married to a Teylingen? Or was she Willem's daughter?
Other than Willem II and Dirk Drossaert, born 1175-85, Willem's later and younger sons were unlikely to be married by 1203.
Any older sons would have inherited Teylingen instead of Willem II, as he did.

If Hadewig was the first wife of WIllem II van Teylingen as of 1203, who were her parents?
Jansen offers one idea - Hadewig van Haarlem. And the record from 1203 curiously pertains to the Van Haerlems.
However, in Ben de Keijzer's recent examination of the Van Haarlem family, there is no mention of Hadewig or Hadewich.
Just Wouter van Haarlem, who would have been her brother.

If Hadewig was indeed Willem II's first wife, we should not be surprised to see claims that Willem II named a daughter Hadewich after his deceased first wife, and we do.

OFFSPRING
Dirk Willemsz, Heer van Over-Sliedrecht‏‎, Ambachtsheer van Alblas, Baljuw van Holland, Heer Van Teijlingen, Waddinxveen en Polien.
Married to Gheertrudis (van Heukelom ? deKeijzer doesn't endorse ). Six children, including Machteld (Margaretha) who marries Gerrit van der Wateringhe. Dies at Stavoren in 1282.

Florijs/Florens Willemsz
Patriarch of the Van Tol family, and presumed father of bastard child Foyken Florensz., who became the "First Foyken".

‎Simon/Symon III Willemsz van Teijlingen van Brederode.
He and (unidentified) wife have four children, including Willem IV van Teylingen who was involved in the revolt and murder of Count Floris V in 1296.
"Willem van Teylingens jongere zoon Simon was de vader van Willem van Teylingen (gestorven 1320), die aanwezig was bij de gevangenneming van graaf Floris V van Holland op 23 juni 1296. " (Wikipedia)

Hadewich "Hazeke" Willemsdr. van Teijlingen.
Married to Florens III van der Woert/Woerd.
(not in Obreen and with limited support; deKeijzer has Floris II married to NN Willemsdr van Teylingen, daughter of Willem II and Oda. Oda van Wassenaar? See Hogenda: Ben de Keijzer "van der Woert - van Foreest.")

Willem III van Teylingen. Mentioned in 1247 at No 437
https://www.collectiegroesbeek.nl/doc/1190194
Obreen appears to be uncertain, and essentially places Willem III as both (or either) the son of Willem II, and/or as his grandson and the son of Dirk.
Willem from 1247 could not have been a young Willem Dirksz, who inherited Teylingen in 1283 and then died shortly after, because the Willem in 1247 would have been too old to be Dirk's son.

HADEWICH VAN TEIJLINGEN or VAN DEE MERWEDE (SPECULATIVE)

INTRODUCTION
It has been claimed that the Teylingen geslacht was related by blood to the Counts of Holland.
Documentary support for these beliefs comes in (at least) two historical records.
In 1248, King Willem II van Holland indicated that he was a blood relative to Willem IV van Brederode.
In 1269, Count Floris IV van Holland referred to Symon van Teylingen as his neef (~cousin).
But the precise nature of those relationships remained undisclosed and undocumented.
I.D.M. de Vries may have provided the key to solving the riddle, perhaps by inference.

Willem IV van Brederode was the son of Dirk Drossaert van Teylingen. (proof?)
Dirk was documented to have been the brother of Willem II van Teylingen and son of Willem I in 1205 and later years.
But was he?
Recently, there has been formidable speculation that he was born to Willem de Gek van Holland, and then adopted by Willem I.
More recently, DNA evidence has been used to argue otherwise.
But is that kind of analysis valid when 25 generations intercede?
So if Dirk was in fact the son of Willem de Gek, who was his mother? Was she a Teylingen? A daughter of Hugo?
No candidates had previously surfaced.

Symon van Teylingen was the son of Willem II, the grandson of WIllem I, and the great grandson of Hugo.
King Willem was the son of Floris IV van Holland, and the brother of Aleid van Holland (with ties to Florekyn as an aside).
In turn, Floris IV was the son (born ca 1210) of Willem I ('de Gek') van Holland with his wife Aleid van Gelre.
However, before that marriage, 'de Gek' had an affair with Jutta Amstel van Pumbeke, yielding a daughter in the 1180s.
Did he have an even earlier affair with a Teylingen daughter? The daughter of Hugo and sister of Willem I ?
I.D.M. de Vries has posited that Hugo had two sons, Willem and Floris, but now also one daughter, Hadewich van Teylingen.
https://www.genealogieonline.nl/stamboom-i-m-d-de-vries/I42769.php#tab-directe-familie
Associates have the same woman, but carrying a different family name.
https://www.genealogieonline.nl/en/families-klein-ree-ea/I54720.php#tab-directe-familie
(Aad van der Geest, it should be noted, has also claimed based on naming conventions that Hugo MUST have had a first born son named Gherit, who died only after Willem and Floris were born. at p40)
Around 1180-85, Willem van Holland and Hadewich were both adolescents, and out of their union, Dirk Drossaert was born.
If so, then for Symon van Teylingen, Hadewich would be the sister of his grandfather WIllem I van Teylingen and "de Gek" would be her consort.
And for Willem IV van Brederode, Hugo would have been his great grandfather on his grandmother's side as the father of Hadewich.

Decades later, Willem II van Teylingen named a daughter Hadewich (aka Hazeke), who married Florens III van der Woert.
(This name was chosen even though his father had relationships with women named Agnes, Geertruid, Margaretha, Maria etc. any one of whom might even have been his mother. Ada was Hazeke's only known sister.)

In May of 2024, De Vries posted this on a public site:
https://www.genealogieonline.nl/stamboom-i-m-d-de-vries/I42769.php#tab-directe-familie
De Vries reveals no documentation.
No other sources of documentation for Hadewich have been located to this point.
And no one else appears to have parroted this claim as yet.
But no other viable solutions to this riddle have been found to exist either.
One curious further clue ---
De Vries' indicates this woman's full name was Hadewich Margaretha Stein van Teylingen.
That suggests this conclusion was drawn by more than mere inference.
As a final note, her DOB around 1165 would seem more reasonable than 1153, if she was the (illegitimate) mother of a bastard son Dirk Drossaert (van Holland).
His first known mention was in 1205, so he was likely born 1180-85.

Update: Arnold Zuiderent points to a publication in NL 2023 examining DNA evidence that refutes or discounts these speculations that Dirk Drossaert was the son of WIllem de Gek. There seems to be insufficient correlation in the genetics.

or Willem Bort Pouwelsz from Leiden in 1460, and schout van Valkenburg en Catwijk as of 1469.
All of these people's names are subject to a variety of spellings. This is a partial listing.

BIOGRAPHY
Willem Foijtgen Willem Bort was the son of Will(a)em Jansz Bort(s) and Lijsbeth Claasdr Nannenz.
He was born about 1350 in Leiden.
(He was first mentioned in 1371 as sheriff of Hazerswoude and in 1374 as a Leiden alderman.)
He is usually referenced without the surname Bort, simply as Willem Foijtgen.
His siblings included Claas/Claes, Lijsbet, and Simon/Sijman.
He was married to Machteld Pietersdr. van Leijden with whom he had at least one daughter, Elizabeth (Lysebet) Willemsdr Bort, who went on to marry Godschalk (Godschalksz.) Oem.
His wife's father Pieter van Leijden was heavily involved in establishing homes for the sick and poor, as was Willem Foijtgen himself.
He died in 1412.

LNAB
Willem Bort had three sons (and one daughter).
This profile pertains to his son Willem Foijtgen Willem Bort, who is referenced in various ways -- usually as some variation of either Willem Bort or Willem Foijtgen.
In at least one undated leenkamer record, a property that was previously the "woning" of Willem Bort was transfered to a Willem Feutien Willem Bortsz.
Willem's other son Claes is commonly referenced as Claes Willem Bortsz(oon).
Curiously, and despite abundant records, there are no known instances of his other brother Simon Bort ever being referenced as Simon Willem Bortsz.

BORT FAMILY HERITAGE
Fred van Kan at Oud Leiden speculates that the Bort family had family ties to the Van Teylingens.

"Op grond van de relatie van de familie met Foijtken Willemsz. c.s. alsmede de leeuw met dwarsbalk in het zegel van de Borts en de bij hen voorkomende namen Simon en Foijtken, vermoeden we ook bij hen een afstamming uit de Van Teijlingens."

Willem Foijtgen's father, Willem Bort, was likely born at least by about 1325, as he is mentioned holding property by 1346.
He was murdered in 1363 in likely connection with the Hook and Cod civil war.

"Dirk van Polanen was daarentegen Hoeks totachter zijnoren. Zijn betrokkenheid bij demoord op de Leidse Kabeljauw Willem Bort in oktober 1363 was mogelijk deaanleidingtotzijn terugtreden als castellanusvan Heusden."

P.C.M. Hoppenbrouwers (1989) Een middeleeuwse samenleving; Het Land van Heusden, ca. 1360 - ca. 1515 (Published as doctoral thesis, Wageningen Agricultural University )

Not many years before, his father Jan was reportedly killed in 1357.
Fran Angevaare places Jan in his tree of Foykens as the probable son of Feukinus. [section II f]

Angevaare notes in particular that Symon Bort, Claes Bort and Willem Foyk(en Willem Bort) were all in attendance in 1395 on the second day of the negotiations convened by Count Aelbrecht van Bieren to resolve differences in connection with the death of Jan Regenboog, an associate and relative of Foyken Foykensz. Unlike those who were present on day one, their relationships to the deceased were not revealed. Angevaare suspects they were residents of Leiden with interests in the matter.

"Het tweede lijstje bevat voornamelijk, en missschien wel alleen, poorters van Leiden. Hun preciese verwantschap met Jan Regenboog werd helaas niet vermeld."

In 1335, a Sijmans Borts was briefly mentioned in Leiden:
"Dese brieve die hier na volghen sien an £ 1 goets ghelts tsiaers dat (huij) Claes van Reijnsburch cureijt inden Coedijc den gasthuijsse bewijst heeft op Gherijd Groeters scuijr ende nu ter tijt Sijman Sijmans soens is ende staet after Sijmans Borts."
A.v.d. Tujin, St. Catharina Gasthuis te Leiden

It seems reasonable to suspect that Sijmans may have been a brother to Jan Bort, but there are no other known records pertaining to him.

In 1282, a record may be found for a Matheus filius Theoderici Bort residing (as an adult) in a neighborhood near Lisse, in the vicinity of Sassenheim and Teylingen and just north of Leiden. That implies that Matheus was born by about 1260, if not earlier.
Who was Dirk, his presumed father?
That is not known.
Dirk van Daerrode was a neighbor.
And Dirk Willemsz. lived in Teylingen where his father Willem (II) van Teylingen had begun building a strategic fortress. Dirk later had a home built on the edge of Warmond named the Steenhuis, first occupied around 1272.
Dirk and his wife are claimed to have started their family in about the mid 1250s.
Nor is it known whether Matheus was directly related to either Jan Bort and or Sijmans Borts. If they were related, there would likely be a generation in between them, born about 1275 and marrying with offspring around 1300.

MENTIONS

1374

(translation)

In 1390, the considerable Leidenaar Willem Foijtgen donated an annual gift of five shillings on the sick (leprosy) living outside the city, that presupposes a certain continuity of habitation. The same Willem Foijtgen was involved when the city council made a parcel of land available in 1399 to set up a building for the lepers there. Willem Foijtgen was part of the Leiden city council in 1374 that also supported other charitable institutions.
