"Community joins forces to help clean up Franktown Cemetery
Community members and family members along with the youth group from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints joined forces, from 7 I a.m. to noon, in a effort to
clean-up the Franktown Cemetery on July 19. The Saturday clean-up event drew approximately 126 people but more than 600 man-hours went into the project earlier in the week, according to Cary LaCouture, organizer. Franktown Fire Chief Lee Willis and ( Gene Walker, cemetery caretaker, oversaw the project as the group sanded, painted and made repairs to the entrance gate and trimmed scrub oak brush on the grounds. Zodiac Rentals and Safeway also supported the project with the donation of equipment and food respectively. According to Franktown history writings, the
Franktown cemetery is remarkable not only for its natural beauty, which has been maintained by sixth and • seventh generations, but also for its continued demand in a modem era. Because land title required a corporate entity, the ; land is held in the name of the Douglas County School 5 District, but the land originally was donated by James • Kelly for his wife Clara’s burial plot in 1870. This makes Franktown cemetery one of the oldest used . cemeteries in Colorado. “There has always been a need for the care of the cemetery and that is one reason why we chose this for a ; service project,” said LaCouture.
