Disputed Origins
This person's existence and relationships were introduced by about 200 descendants who attempted to claim a share of the 1907 Eastern Cherokee payment by asserting that their ancestor born in the early 1700’s was the same man as a Cherokee person born in the early 1800’s. Don Greene in his book, Shawnee Heritage embellished the claims further. The Missouri man was not Cherokee, was not named Youngwolf, and was not a Chief.
"I concur Don Greene's book is a sham. I talked to him on the phone and he knew nothing about my Gardner Green family from Lunenburg VA. He basically copied my research, and added some "Native American" sounding names. This does not mean that this Gardner Green was not Native American or our family where liars. They were related to the White Top Laurel Cherokee Sizemore's and were part NA. I'm a direct descendant and show NA DNA on Ancestry. You can't argue the DNA." - Troy Sims (grandson of Golden Green, and 7th great grandson of this Gardner Green)
Biography
Gardner Green(e) was supposedly born about 1735 (possibly in North Carolina) and died in Missouri. The parents and siblings attached to this profile appear to be inventions of Don Greene. Gardner Green does not appear in any census records in North Carolina, (*Not True: see below 1780 Rowan NC) Tennessee, Kentucky, or Missouri, all places he is claimed to have lived. A newspaper article in 1908 described "the only person living who saw him," descendant Nancy Green. Nancy was 80 years old in 1908 and stated that Gardiner had visited her family "when she was a child 65 years ago," meaning he was still alive in 1843, which is very unlikely. It appears Ms. Green was confused about whom she met. [1] Several other descendants stated that he had died before 1830.

*The Moravians had Native American and Cherokee Schools. It's possible that Gardner Green was closely affiliated with the Moravians and the Cherokee in Rowan NC. Given Gardner's connection to "Ned" Sizemore, and Edward Vann, Edward Vann's children being schooled at the Moravian School at Springplace GA, this is very plausible. I find a Conrad Green on the Moravian Records in Rowan NC. This may be in reference to Gardner Green. "Young Wolf" at Springplace GA had a reference of Conrad his father visiting him,.

Some of his descendants tried to obtain Cherokee land in Indian Territory in 1896 and were unsuccessful. According to affidavits filed in connection with their Indian claims (and accounts vary), Gardner was the father of Benjamin, [2] William, [3] Isaac, [4] Letha, and Mossie. [5] Son Benjamin was reported to be 70 or 75 in 1835 and was supposedly born in Tennessee. A 1908 newspaper article said that Benjamin lived near Sturgeon, Missouri and died in 1840, [6] but his granddaughter Louisa Ketchum stated that he died about 1847. [7]
Research Notes
In 1907 over 200 people, descendants of the white man named Gardner Green, filed applications for a share of the Eastern Cherokee payment. They all claimed that the Missouri man was the same person as Young Wolf aka Gardiner Greene. All claims were rejected. Guion Miller's analysis and response to the claims is included with application #5145, William Neal. Digitized at Fold3 beginning at Guion Miller. This Blog by Twila "Polly's Granddaughter" walks through how any possible Gardner Green of Missouri could not have been Young Wolf Gardiner Greene of Cherokee Nation.
The Cherokee Gardiner Green/Young Wolf was born in 1809 in the Cherokee Nation, the son of a man named Mouse. He enrolled in the Moravian missionaries' school at Spring Place (now Georgia) in 1819, at the age of ten. [8] His parents were unable to afford school clothes for their son, so he left the school in 1822. The Moravians had received an offer from an anonymous donor to pay for a student's education, as long as he would be renamed Gardiner Greene ; the donor was believed to be Gardiner Greene, a merchant of Boston. After much discussion the Moravians agreed to accept the gift and offer it to Young Wolf so that he could return to school. [9]
There are a number of men named Gardner/Gardiner Green living in the southeast at this time. Gardiner Green appears on a list of tithables with John Green in Lunenburg County, Virginia in 1764, meaning he was born by 1748. [10] Someone named John Green died in Lunenburg in 1768 and left a will but did not list a son named Gardiner.
South Carolina land records [11] and the 1800 U.S. Census place a Gardner Green (age 45+) in Greenville, South Carolina. [12]
