The First Annual Garver Family Reunion

Decatur, Illinois, August 24. -- The first annual reunion of the Garver people, a numerous and Influential pioneer family of Macon and Piatt Counties, was held at Oakland Park today, with 135 relatives present, besides 400 distant connections and friends. The Garvers are descendants of the original ancestor, Jacob Garver, a native of Switzerland, who came to America and settled In Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1730.

The Illinois Garvers are descendants of Christian, son of Jacob, who was the father of nine children. Their descendants number 456: children, 60; grandchildren, 218; great-grandchildren, 172; and great-great-grandchildren, 6.

David Garver, aged 80 years, is the only surviving son of Christian Garver. He is president of the association. Addresses were delivered by:

  • David Garver, of Decatur;
  • John G. Keller, of Monticello;
  • C. H. Garver, of Oreana;
  • S. B. Garver. of Farmer City;
  • A. H. Garver, of Argenta;
  • Rev. A. L. Scott, of Argenta, and
  • Judge NeIson, of Decatur.

All partook of a basket dinner and voted to repeat the union every year.
