Tammy |
Lyrae: My great Aunt Shirley (Grandma Cheney's sister-in-law) was an aunt that I have special memories of.
Aunt Shirley needed to move to help her mother out and the place where she was staying didn't allow dogs, She had an adorable little dog named Tammy and needed someone to take her in. I was more than happy to oblige!
Tammy was a teacup poodle about the size of two hands. Normally, I don't prefer poodles because I always thought they were high-strung and yippy but she had a quite, gentle nature.
I had always had larger dogs, so she was a special treat and I liked to pamper her.
I was used to currying horses but she was so delicate! I liked to brush her beautiful white coat, put bows at the top of her ears and paint her toenails. Her eyes were like two dark watery buttons...kind of like a baby seal. : )
Over the next few years, we had two new additions to our family (Layne and LaTasha) who (once they were toddlers) became a little too much for an older dog.
She was so tiny and the little ones loved to play with her so much that it wasn't always the safest for her. My Aunt had recently moved into her own home again but wouldn't have dreamed of asking for her back. When we discussed our concerns for Tammy, she was so thrilled to have her little baby back after 4 years.
Tammy had 2 puppies (Prince and Princess) who were about the size of little white mice when they were born. I would love to have kept them all because they were so tiny and cute.

Tammy was very fond of Gary because when he came over to pick me up for dates he babied her...like he still does to pets to this day. One more thing I love about your Baba!

Frosty |
Lyrae: When we brought Frosty home she was just a little ball of white fur.
My brother Lance and I had a paper route when we were about 10 and 11. We would take turns letting Frosty sleep at the bottom of our canvas tote full of papers while we delivered. It didn't take long before it became too heavy for us to tote around her plus all of the newspapers!
As a German Shepard, Frosty had a very territorial, protective nature. I took dog obedience classes with her and she minded very well.
I love to recall a few of her "night watches".
There was a certain neighboring farm boy (aka Gary/Baba) that lived only a quarter-of-a-mile down the road. He was a little intimidated by Frosty. She had got a hold of the leg of his jeans one time when he had come over to our house to retrieve a tractor that my dad had borrowed to till up a large garden plot. She thought he was a thief!
This certain neighbor boy used to come over in the evenings sometimes. Mind you, we had spent all day at school together, after school together, talking on the 13-party line phone (ask me about that someday) in the evening and then he would stand outside my window at night sometimes and we would chat some more. This went on for four years! : )
My dad used to walk by in the hallway to check on the little ones in the room next to mine. The first time that he saw Gary talking to me outside the window he was curious to know how he got past Frosty without her barking. Gary replied that his dad had half-a- beef in the freezer and he and Frosty had become quick friends with the tasty bribes!
Dad didn't mind him coming over and talking..."As long as you stay on THAT side of the screen". He loved Gary! There was a standing joke between our dads that there was an underground tunnel between our farms.

Tinkerbell |
Lyrae: This was the dog that Gary had when we were dating in high school. Tinkerbell was a very, very happy dog.
She used to make us laugh when it snowed out...only the least little bit and she would get high-centered because she was so low to the ground! : )
Gary |
Teddy Bear Joe |
Lyrae: Teddy Bear Joe was Gary's dog growing up. He had a bad habit of chasing the neighbor's cattle.
One day the neighbor took a shot at him to scare him off and the bullet lodged under the skin on the top of his head.
It stayed there for the rest of his life. What do you think...a souvenir or a reminder?

Snoopy |
Lyrae: Snoopy was the first pet that I ever remember having. She was given to my parents as a wedding present so when I was born (3 years later) she was very protective of me! She was a gentle and sweet dog.
Her favorite game was to be taken to the other room while we hid her favorite tennis ball. We would then call her into the room to "find it!"...which she always did.
A favorite spot to hide it was under the couch cushion until she caught onto us!
