Research Focus and Theories

This page is being created from the Weekend of Gaulding Research Work as a start of the Gaulding-A-Thon, November 20-22, 2020. This represents the "getting ducks in a row" for important research to clean up and organize all the Gauldings, Gauldens and Gauldins who descend from John Gaulding, 1665 of St. Peters Parish, New Kent County Virginia.

John Gaulding, ~1665

Is there an image or acess to the original parish register? We need to find an image of the St. Peters Parish Church Register to see the issue with Mathew Gaulding, daughter of..." is it a transcription error either way? What does the original say? There is a transcribed post of it in the comments section.

Alexander Gaulding, 1717

This is the man hanged for highway robbery.

Bill Gaulden of Kansas

Has him married to Mary Gaulding. Where did she come from to marry him in 1738? [1]

Catherine Gauldin

Catherine has his wife as Mary Unknown and not Gaulding.

Charles Gaulding

Mentions him on page 23, An Alexander Stuart was in the area and that could account for one of her sons being named Alexander. In December 1752, Anne's son, Alexander died and a James Stuart was given custody of one of her children."

The 70k Document, Bill Gaulden of Kansas

Bill Gaulding has a 20-year leap for John Mathew, bef. 1710 children. John Mathew, born before 1710 would have been about 20 in 1725, 35 in 1735.

John, 1725 |Alexander, 1726 then the 20-year jump to William, 1745 | Elizabeth Nancy, 1747 | Jacob, 1749 | Judith, 1752 | Jesse, 1758

Charles Gaulding doesn't give any dates other than John Gaulding, 1735-1781

Generation Jumps Affect on YDNA Tested Lines and DNA Confirmation

A Y DNA tester, who matches F.E. Gaulden, is affected by the possible generation jump.

Research needs to determine the solution for the Generation Jump for William Gaulding, 1745 back to his parent, then on to John Mathew.

Omitted Family Research?

How does James Smith Gaulding connect back to John Gaulding, 1665? A YDNA tester has a pedigree going back to Samuel Gaulding, 1732 (Youngest son of John Gaulding, 1665). This is for the YDNA.

Laura Gaulding Bailey

Poses theories for the origination of the Gauldings in the Americas to Huguenots from France who are English or Welsh when they come to the Americas or Quakers from PA. No researcher today is chasing these theories nor are these theories considered relevant to today's research work.

John Gaulding, 1665

Does not discuss him and picks-up with John Gaulden who settled in Sumter, SC.

Issues

  • Theorizes the Gauldings are Gouldings from Pennsylvania - no connection to Quakers or Pennsylvania.
  • States John Gaulden of Sumter was a soldier under Francis Marion. This is often copied and is on many, many online trees but John of Sumter was not a soldier. He was a petite Juror and could have been supplying materials to Francis Marion's troops when he died near the battle of Eutaw Springs.
  • Mixes-up the James of Greenwood, SC (Ninety Six) with the Dempsey and James D. of York County, SC. This has been corrected here on WikiTree, but how much of the color of the story she tells goes with whom.

Bill Gaulding

John Gaulding, 1665

"JOHN GAULDING II, 1665 married ANN after 1690 in VA. His wife, Ann, is assumed to be MARY ANN STUART, who was born before 1685. She died on 27 Oct 1735 in ST. PETER'S PARISH, NEW KENT CO., VA. ANN may have been the daughter of ALEXANDER STUART, who appears to have lived in NEW KENT CO., VA area in this period. It is noted that the second son of JOHN and ANN GAULDING was named ALEXANDER, thereby placing some credence to ALEXANDER STUART being the father of ANN. Children recorded in the ST. PETER’S PARISH CHURCH REGISTER are included below but there obviously could have been other children, however, no record has been found to establish that:

Martha Gaulding, 1721
John Mathew Gaulding, 1710
Anne Gaulding, 1705
Honour Gaulding, 1713
Alexander Gaulding, 1717
Samuel Gaulding, 1732

"The Gauldin Family in America began with John Gaulding and descends from his line through WILLIAM TURNER GAULDIN, a veteran of the Revolutionary War. Catherine spends time explaining the differences between some of the sources for the Family. Very definitve.

One line of the William Turner family has been disproven via DNA testing. Contact Mags Gaulden for further information. This information is not public at the request of the family.

John Golding of Burnham England

There is a birth record Catherine points to as a hypothetical beginning of the Gaulding family in England, Thomas Golding as father of John Golding, 1630, Swindon, Wiltshire, England, in the Wiltshire, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages and Burials, 1538-1812. [2] The name listed is absolutely spelled Golding in the record. Record Image. "The record is John, son of Thomas and I don't know who he was because it's not proven the immigrant was from Wiltshire. That's just a record. The existence of John of Burnham in Virginia comes from the land records and the will of William Hallam who called him out by name and said he was of Burnham." - Catherine Gauldin - Will look into this as I have access to some research on this and the Hallam connection. Mags Gaulden

The spelling of Golding as it relates to this family does not match any of the DNA findings at any Marker or YDNA testing level. The Gaulding Males do not match any currently test males who carry the Golden, Goulding or Golding surnames. Golden DNA Group Project. Deeper Next Generation Testing, or Big Y, has confirmed that the Golden families diverted from any possible connection to the Gaulding line about 6,100 years ago (4,200 BCE). Further testing is needed and research is ongoing.

Gayle King Blankenship

Blankenship Ancestors, Self Published, 1995, "Researchers of the Golding family have said that the name "Gaulding" evolved from "Golding." However, the three early Golding families of Virginia do not appear to be connected"
