Stanley Appleyard and four connected families with surnames Crawshaw, Jackson, Goodyear and Moorhouse who lived in Gawber Road, Barnsley.

Contents

Introduction

The story starts with a photo in one of Stanley Appleyard's photo albums. The image[1] shows a chemist's shop window with the name "J W Moorhouse". The location was traced to Market Hill, Barnsley, and the Joseph Moorhouse was identified.

The 1901 census [2] shows Joseph and wife Alice living at 5 Gawber Road (see image). Further investigation revealed that Alice turned out to be Stanley Appleyard's half sister Alice Maud Mary Carr. The first connection had been made.

Also living in Gawber Road in 1901 was Stanley's future wife Doris Irene Jackson. Doris's family lived at 49 Gawber Road[3]. At this time Stanley would have aged 13 and Doris aged 4. They would not have known each other. Doris's mother was Ada Annie Crawshaw who had married Richard Jackson in 1895.

Next door at number 47[3] lived Ada's brother Herbert Crawshaw, his wife and five children. The eldest daughter Jessie Jackson, aged 17 would go on to marry Robert Arthur Hanson Goodyear, Robert was nephew of Henry Goodyear who had previously lived in Gawber Road.

The exact locations of 47 and 49 Gawber Road are uncertain. The houses are shown on both the 1890 Ordnance Survey map[4] and the Barnsley Workhouse map that shows Greenfoot Lane running North-South and a row of houses to the west of the lane[5]

The 1901 census includes 9 houses built between 1895 and 1895 numbered 17-31 and situated between Syke's Avenue and Wellfield road. These houses do not appear on the 1890 map[4] and meant that odd house numbers in Gawber Road were changed at the time. The change meant that house number 41 post 1895 would have numbered 27 in 1891 and earlier. The difference appears to be 14 in all cases. A table showing relevant old and new house numbers appears below.

Other significant houses

The 1891 census records Jordan Villa, Wellfield House[7], and Wellfield Villa lying in Wellfield Road to the north of Gawber Road[8]. Jordan Villa and Wellfield House both appear on the 1890 Ordnance survey map[4]. Confusingly Jordan Villa is now named Jordan House[9].

Census records show the Crawshaw's had been living in Gawber Road since at least 1861 and Henry Goodyear and family were living there in 1871 and 1891.

Crawshaws in Gawber Road

The story starts with their father, Jabez Crawshaw. He is recorded in the 1841 census, age 20, living at May Day Green, Barnsely (together with his siblings Elizabeth and Charles and their (widowed?) mother Hannah).[10].

By 1851 Jabez has married Sarah Senior and living with her daughter Sarah Ellen Senior, aged 8. Jabez and Sarah have one child, John Armitage aged 9 months[11]. His occupation is recorded as Butcher.

The 1861 census records Jabez Crawshaw now married with 4 children living at Jordan House, Gawber Road[12]. (This is not the current Jordan House in Wellfield Road[9]. ) The eldest child "Sarah Ellen Senior" is named as "Sarah E Crawshaw" (aged 18) in the 1861 census.

The 1871 records Jabez Crawshaw and family now living at 27 Gawber Road[13], presumably the same house. The next census entry is for Henry Goodyear and his wife Sarah living at number 31. (Number 29 did not get built until 1896[14]).

The 1891 census shows Herbert Crawshaw's mother Sarah living at Jordan House (number 27) with her daughter Ada Annie. The next census entry shows Henry Goodyear and (large) family living at 31. Number 29 is not listed[15].

Confusingly The Barnsley Chronicle reports Henry Goodyear's attempted sale of The Views, Gawber Road in November 1891[6]. The assumption is that Henry and family were living at 31 and also owned number 25 (The Views).
