About Leon Lane Sr. "Rocky":
Leon is my cousin, who unfortunately passed away in 2015, as I never met him, I didn't run across his research until after he had passed away. He had 20+ years of research into our family history before I began. As Leon has said about the "family record" and how it was given to him by his Aunt Rena, I likewise have gratitude for all the time and dedication it must have taken to write not only the "Genealogy Report " but for all the information he shared across multiple genealogy sites. These family history pages on www.geneaology.com were compiled by Leon Lane Sr., as he was given a copy of the Lane's "Family Record" by his aunt, Rena Lane McDannels Smith, but Leon's grandmother, Nola Lane, the wife of Worthy S. Lane was the recorder of said notes. He referred to her as the "family historian" for this branch of Lane's. She carried a notepad to record family events. He wrote:

"I owe a great deal of gratitude to her [his aunt] for giving me this record. I will strive to add to, and make corrections as needed." In this genealogy report the family of Samuel S¹. Lane are listed in order."

GENERATION¹

Samuel S. Lane is the earliest proven ancestor of the Lane family. In earlier records (pre-1830) he was spelling his last name – "Lain". It wasn't until the early 1830's that he started spelling it – "Lane", and all generations since have used "Lane". He must have been spelling it wrong one way or the other, census records from that time period indicate he could not read or write or it's possible that he knowingly altered the spelling.

A tradition passed down through Samuel's second son, William Hamilton² implied the Lane's had an ancestor of the Seneca Indians, supposedly in the generation of Samuel's parents, but this has never been verified.
Summary:

He was born on January 31, 1813, in Fayette County, PA -(Category:Fayette County, Pennsylvania). He was a successful farmer in Upshur County, Virginia -(Category:Upshur County, Virginia), which in 1863 became Upshur County, WV -(Category:Upshur County, West Virginia).

First, he married, Elizabeth Audra Moore (b: abt. 1814?, probably in Fayette County, PA? ; d: between 1838-1840?). He married second, Elizabeth Charlotte Bryan (b: Apr 19, 1821, Rockingham Co, VA ; d: 18 Apr 1899, Upshur Co, WV) in August 1840 - in Rockingham County, VA -(Category:Rockingham County, Virginia). She was daughter of James Bryan and Sarah Martha Shown. He died January 25, 1885, in Hinkleville, Upshur, WV -(Category:Hinkleville, West Virginia). He and about 7 other family members was actually buried on the family's old farm in Hinkleville, under a tree w. There's now a headstone in the Mount Olive Cemetery -(Category:Mount Olive Cemetery, Hinkleville, West Virginia), which in those days wasn't far from the Lane farm.

-ABT 1831- Shortly after reaching his 18th birthday, around January in 1831, Samuel moved from Allegany County, Maryland, to southwestern PA, most likely to Wharton Township, Fayette, PA?. Around the same time, he married Elizabeth Audra Moore. It's unknown who her parents were, or where they were from. She was born around 1814? - possibly in Fayette County, Pennsylvania?. They had 4 son's, the 3rd, Samuel Albert² (#4) was born in Wharton Township, Fayette, PA -(Category:Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania), the other 3 were probably born there, too.
-ABT 1832- Their 1st child, Isaac Spicer Lane (#2) was born in or around 1832, in PA (probably in Fayette County?).
-ABT 1834- His 2nd child, William Hamilton² Lane (#3) was born about 1834.
-1835- Named after his dad, the 3rd son Samuel Albert² Lane (#4) was born in 1835 in Wharton Township, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.
-1835 DEC 8- Samuel S., Conrad W. Shown, Levi Cushman, and Alexander Stewart (all 3 of Wharton Township), had bought 400 acres from Andrew Stewart. Samuel's portion was 100 acres/one quarter/twenty four perches of land.
-1837 APR 18- Samuel and Audra Lain sold their 100 acres of land to Harrison Wysong, of Fayette County, PA. Samuel was described as: "of the County of Allegany, and State of Maryland", which indicates he was living in Allegany County, Maryland, at this time -(Category:Allegany County, Maryland).
-ABT 1838-1840- His wife Elizabeth Audra Lain died abt.1838-1840?, exact date and location unknown.
-ABT 1840- - Samuel, and his four, young sons moved to the Shenandoah Valley, in Rockingham County, VA -(Category:Rockingham County, Virginia).

-1840 AUG 27- He married his second wife, Elizabeth Charlotte Bryan(t) August 27, 1840 in Rockingham County, VA -(Category:Rockingham County, Virginia). She was born in Rockingham County, VA, Apr 19, 1821 (the daughter of James Bryan and Sarah Martha Shown). Samuel and Elizabeth were married by Rev. John J. Reimensnyder. Mr. Reimensnyder was an in-law of the bride, he married Susan M. Bryan on May 3, 1838, in Augusta County, Virginia. James Bryan and Sarah Martha Shown were both born in Maryland, they were married on August 14, 1815, in Augusta County, VA. Sarah was possibly the daughter of John and Margaret Shown? of Allen County, Ohio.
-1840s- After their marriage Samuel and Elizabeth C. moved from Rockingham County -(Category:Rockingham County, Virginia), to nearby, Burke's Mill (or Burketown), in Augusta County, Virginia -(Category:Burketown, Virginia). They lived in Burke's Mill for about ten years. They would eventually have six more children, three sons, and three daughters.
-1843 NOV 27- He bought a tract of land in Augusta County, Virginia from John D. and Elizabeth Miller (bk. 64, pg. 257).
-1846 MAR 4- He deeded land to Jacob Sheets on March 4, 1846 (bk. 66, pg. 100).
-1846 SEP 23- Samuel sold a portion of his farm to his wife's parents, and they moved in next door.
-1850s- During the 1850's, at an uncertain time, Isaac (#2), William (#3), and Perry Lane (#4) moved away, and apparently never returned to the home. Isaac (#2), and William (#3) went to Maryland, where both got married. Perry (#4) went to Williamston, VA (Category:Wood County, Virginia), where he married Susan Mayo and raised a family.
-1855 JAN 19- He sold a tract of land to his former neighbor, Benjamin Spicer on January 19, 1855 (Wills: bk 74-pg 558).
-1862- Charley Brooks, of Harrison County, WV began the wholesale raising, and manufacturing of tobacco in 1862. He had three acres of tobacco, built two tobacco houses, sweetened it with homemade sorghum, and shipped it by the hogs head. Samuel S. began tobacco farming in this way not long after Mr. Brooks.

— Mount Olive Chapel —

Samuel S. Lane was a member of the United Brethren Church. He and his family played a major part in the construction of what is now known as the "Hinkleville United Methodist Church", as shown in the following historical sketch of the church:

When construction of the first, Hinkleville United Brethren Church began Samuel hewed the frame in the woods, and there it stayed hidden in the woods until after the Civil War. Four years later, upon the return of the soldiers, construction of the church resumed.

John Lane (#7), and his brother, Peter Calvin Lane (#8) hauled the poplar logs, which had been cut with a pole axe at Samuel's farm, to Marshall Gould's saw mill. At Gould's mill, the logs were cut with a whip-saw, run by water power. The brothers hauled the logs on a bob sled, with a pair of oxen, and one horse. While their younger brother, Theodore Brasher (#9), would hitch his dog to a little sled, and race his brothers to Gould's mill. Mr. Gould donated all the mill work he did on the logs.

Samuel Lane, Enoch Cutright, and George Moore were the carpenters. Paris Casto plastered the walls, and the shingles for the roof were made by hand. Other workers included Alva Arithna, Teter Neely, and Asby Cutright.

Samuel Lane, who had come to Upshur County, in 1850, from the Shenandoah Valley, Augusta, Virginia, decided to return to solicit funds for the new church from some old friends. The money was needed for cut nails, which cost 28¢ a pound, and window glass, which was expensive.

The land for the church was purchased from Jacob Casto. The first trustees were Enoch Cutright, Lemuel Brake, and Jacob Rohr. Some of the first members were Samuel Lane, Mrs. Enoch Cutright, Marshall Gould, and his wife, Asby Cutright, Absalom Helmick, and his wife, Martha, Ithel Hinkle, and his wife.

-1868- The buildings construction was completed in 1868, and was given the name: "Mount Olive Chapel". The name of the Church changed a few times before it was demolished, and a new church built in it's place. The Church that exists there today is known as the Hinkleville United Methodist Church.

— Last Will & Testament —

-1883 MAY 26- His "Last Will and Testament" was drafted as follows:

"This Will, made this 26th day of May, in 1883, in the name of God Amen. I, Samuel S¹. Lane (#1) of the county of Upshur, and state of West Virginia. I think in my seventy-first year, as I am getting old and weak in body ; but of sound mind and disposing memory for which I thank God, and calling to mind the uncertainty of life and certainty of death, and being desirous to dispose of all such worldly estate, as it hath pleased God to bless me with, I do hereby make my last will and testament in manner and form following, that is to say:

"1st, I desire after my decease, that the executors here after appointed, pay all my just debts out of money coming into their hands,"
"2nd, I will, and bequeath to my son, Samuel A. Lane (#4), five dollars,"
"3rd, I will, and bequeath to my son, John L. Lane (#7), five dollars, and a one man saddle,"
"4th, I will, bequeath to my son, P.C. Lane (#8), five dollars,"
"5th, I will, and bequeath to my son, Theodore Brasher Lane (#9), five dollars,"
"6th, I will, and bequeath to my daughter, Elizabeth Lane McAvoy (#10), five dollars."

"10th, I will, and direct that my wife Elizabeth C. Lane, have one gray mare, two cows, all the bedding, one clock, one broad hoe, one set of Hames, the wheat crop, after expenses are paid, half the corn crop, one table, one stand, and one chest."
"11th, I will, and direct that my executors pay off and execute my will one year after my decease."
"12th, I hereby constitute and appoint John L. Lane (#7), P.C. Lane (#8), and Theodore B. Lane (#9), executors of this will, day and date above written."

-1885 JAN 23- Samuel S¹. Lane died January 23, 1885, he was buried under a tree on the family's old farm in Hinkleville, WV. There were about 8 family members buried there, 3 adults and 5 infants.
-1899 APR 18- His widow Elizabeth Charlotte Lane died on April 18, 1899. She was laid to rest beside her husband at the farm. There were memorial tombstones placed in the Mount Olive Cemetery -(Category:Mount Olive Cemetery, Hinkleville, West Virginia), at a much later date, but they are actually buried at the old Lane Farm in Hinkleville, WV -(Category:Hinkleville, West Virginia). There were no tombstones on the farm, there only rocks to mark the location.
To the best of his (Leon's) knowledge, Rena H. Lane Smith, the daughter of Worthy, paid for the stones and had them placed in Mount Olive Cemetery, which was not far from there in Hinkleville, WV.

-1840s- VA - Early in the 1840's, after their mother passed away, his father brought him, and his 3 brothers to Augusta County, VA, where they spent their adolescent years.
-1850- VA - In the 1850 Census, he was recorded as living in the house of Samuel Craun (Crown on Census) and Frances V. (Landes) Craun, in District 2 1/2, Mount Sidney, in Augusta County, Virginia -(Category:1850 US Census, Augusta County, Virginia) -(Category:Mount Sidney, Virginia), was not far from his father's home. He worked as a farmer, but it seems he didn't want to be a farmer, like his father. Sometime after the 1850 Census, he decided to move to Baltimore, Maryland. There, he became a blacksmith, then later, a machinist. He didn't fight in the Civil War, possibly his occupational skills were his contribution to the war effort.
-1854 DEC 28- He married Elizabeth Orrison December 28, 1854 (born in VA).
-1860- MD - In the 1860 Census, he was living in the 3rd Eastern District, in Howard County, Maryland -(Category:1860 US Census, Howard County, Maryland)-(Category:Howard County, Maryland).

-1907 APR 19- DC - He died about a year later, on April 19th, 1907, in Washington DC, at the age of 75.
-1907 APR 21- MD - His funeral was held the following Sunday, on April 21st, 1907, at the Congress Heights Episcopal Church, in Washington, DC. -1850- In the 1850 Census, he was recorded as living in the house of Daniel Link, in Burke's Mills -(Category:1850 US Census, Augusta County, Virginia) -(Category:Burketown, Virginia), District 2 1/2, Augusta County, Virginia, near his father's 's home . He left around the mid 1850's, and apparently never returned home. He went to Maryland, got married, and raised a family. At some point the prefix "Rev" was added to his name (his indexed obituary said he was an Episcopal minister of gospel.
-1859 AUG 9- He married Catherine Roxanna Langley on August 9, 1859, in Baltimore, Maryland -(Category:Baltimore, Maryland).
