Conclusions

All of the descendants were found to carry the Y-chromosome mutations identified in the Y14084* SNP group believed to be carried by Thomas Mattingly I.

SNP Y14083 was found in all the descendants of John Baptist Mattingly Jr., and all all descendants of his younger brother Richard Mattingly Sr.. SNP Y14083 defines a major sub-clad under haplogroup Y14084*. John Mattingly most likely carried SNP Y14083 and passed it to all of his sons. It is not clear whether John Mattingly or his father Cesar Mattingly was the progenitor of SNP Y14083.

SNP Y14083 was not found in any of the descendants of Thomas Mattingly II , older brother of Cesar "Cezar" Mattingly.

Four sub-clads of haplogroup Y14083* were found in the Y-chromosomes of 15 project participants descending from John Mattingly.

• SNPs FT154797, FT200024 and FT200025 were found to be unique to participants C6 and C7 establish a new sub-clad of haplogroup Y14083*. Charles Edward Mattingly carried these three SNPs and passed them to his sons. The progenitor of these three SNPs has not been identified.
• SNPs Y200586, Y200587 and Y200588 were found to be unique to participants C10, C11 and C12, identifying a new sub-clad of haplogroup Y14083*. James Edward Mattingly, Sr. carried these three SNPs and passed them to his sons. The progenitor of these three SNPs has not been identified.
• SNPs Y97568 and Y81248 were found to be unique to participants C3, C5, C9, C13, C14 and C15 establishing a new sub-clad of haplogroup Y14083*. Elias Barton "Ely" Mattingly carried these two SNPs and passed them to his sons. The progenitor of these two SNPs has not been identified.
• SNP FGC22005 was found to be unique to participants C3, C5, C9, C13, and C14 establishing a new sub-clad of haplogroup Y97568*. Raymond Mattingly was the progenitor of this SNP and passed it to three of his sons.
• SNP Y220069 was found to be unique to participants C3 and C14 to create new sub-clad of haplogroup FGC22005*. It is not clear whether C3 or his father, Lafayette Joseph Mattingly Sr. was the progenitor of this SNP.
• SNP FT156058 was found to be unique to participants C5 and C9 to create new sub-clad of haplogroup FGC22005*. :Charles Elias Mattingly was the progenitor of this SNP and passed it to two of his sons.

No unique SNPs were found for participants C1 and C2 which might indicate a sub-clad for descendants of Leonard Barton Mattingly, son of "Old" Joseph Mattingly.

Two participants need a corroborating DNA from a close relative to determine whether they also define new sub-clads under haplogroup Y14083*.

• A descendant of William Oscar Mattingly would be useful to confirm the DNA testing data of participant C4.
• A descendant of Ignatius Stillman Mattingly would be useful to confirm the DNA testing data of participant C8.
