This page is to document the conflicting information regarding George Rousell who passed away in Forbes, New South Wales in 1921. He was purportedly born about 1823 in Somerset, England. A baptism has been associated with his profile (1821 in Broadwindsor, Dorset) and needs to be investigation for it's validity. Note: there are two entries for the baptism of George.[1][2]

Identified marriage for William Rowsel and Elizabeth Hunt on 17 February 1808 in Broadwindsor, Dorset, England.[3]

Identified baptisms for eight children (including Geroge) of William and Elizabeth Rowsell.

Identified a death for Mary Rousell, an infant, who was buried on 1 May 1817 in Broadwindsor, Dorset. Mary may be a sibling of George's who died before being baptised. Searched for baptism of Mary in 1817 and was not able to find anything.[12]

While searching The National Archives (TNA) Kew website for information regarding George Rousell, identified an entry for removal of this family from Broadwindsor to North Perrott, where William and Elizabeth were identified in the 1841 Census (see below). Therefore confident that this is the same family. Searched ancestry and identified the document. The removal of William, Elizabeth and their younger children Henry, George, Edith, Mary Jane and Elizabeth on 12 September 1831.[13] Suspect older children had already left home and/or married.

Parents

Searched Somerset prison registers and Identified an entry in the Somerset prison register for William Rowsell on 11 July 1833, age 50 (born about 1783), born in Broadwindsor, abode North Perrott, height 5' 6", person slight, complexion fair, visage long, hair brown, eyes hazel, marks lost the sight of left eye, trade labourer, married, 8 children, read but not write, remarks for want of [?].[14]

Identified William Rousel age 60, Elizabeth age 55 and Elizabeth age 11, living in North Perrott, Somerset in the 1841 census. This is about 6 miles north east of Broadwindsor, Dorset.[15][16][17]

Identified William Rowsell age 68 and Elizabeth age 64 still living in North Perrott in the 1851 census .[18][19]

Identified Betsy Rousell, widow living in North Perrott, Somerset, born in Broadwindsor, Dorset. Suggest this is Elizabeth Rousell and her husband William has passed away since the pervious census.[20]

Identified a burial for Wm (William) Rowsell on 27 Nov 1859 in North Perrott, Somerset.[21] Death registration, Free BMD, death Dec 1859, Rowswell William, Yeovil, 5c 335.

Searched for Elizabeth in the 1871 census and unable to find a person that seemed to fit (Ruled out Elizabeth Rowsel mother-in-law living with William and Ann Cole in Dundry, Somerset). Therefore suspect Elizabeth passed away between 1861 and 1871. Identified a burial for Elizabeth Rowsell, buried 14 Nov 1866, age 80 years.[22]

John

Searched for possible marriages of John. Searched "Dorset, England, Church of England Marriages and Banns, 1813-1921" collection for possible marriage of John. Identified two marriages for John.

  • Marriage for John Rowsel to Sarah Poore on 21 May 1826 in Broadwindsor, Dorset.[23] No other applicable marriages identified.
  • Marriage for John Rowsell to Sarah Powell on 23 Aug 1835, in Bridport, Dorset, witness William Rowsell.[24]

Suspect first marriage is not for the John Rowsell born in Broadwindsor, Dorset. Identified A John with his wife Sarah and children in 1841 and 1851 census.[25][26] In 1851, this John is aged 47, giving him a birth year of 1804. In addition, search for baptisms of children, identified baptism of James Poer Rowsell on 16 June 1833 in Winsham, Somerset and John Poer Rowsell, both sons have their mother's maiden name (Poore) as a middle name. Therefore, confirm that the marriage in 1826 is not for the correct John Rowsell.[27][28] Also, this is the incorrect John in the 1861 Census, born abt 1804, Sherborne, Dorset and 1871 Census.[29]Possibly 1871 Census but has John and Sarah?[30]

Yet to identify John in 1841-1861 Census. Identified John in 1871 Census (John only).[31] Where was John between marriage and 1871? Military?

Identified possible entry for John's family in 1841 census, including Sarah and children Ann (5), Danl [Daniel] (3), Mary (1). Unable to identify family after 1841. Did they emigrate? Did they pass away? Found a Mary Rowsell in the 1851 Census in the workhouse, is this the same Mary? This record also include a James and Elizabeth Rowsell. Needs more investigation.[32]

William

Identified William Rousell in the 1841 and 1851 England Census through wife and birth place in 1851 census and tracking back to 1841.[34][35] Then searched for a marriage of William and Sarah in the Bridport area, identified a marriage between William Rowsell and Sarah Welsh on 9 April 1835 in Bridport, Dorset. This ties in with the eldest child Emma being born abt 1836. In addition one of the witnesses was John Rousell, possibly a brother.[36]

Burial William B Rowsell, age 73, buried 6 Aug 1884, abode Bridport, in Allington, Dorset. This ties in with information obtained in the 1881 Census where William is listed as William B (for the first time).[40]

Sarah

Searched for marriage of Sarah Rowsell, identified a marriage to Samuel Lacey, FreeBDM, marriage Mar 1838, Sarah Rowsell, Chard, 10 541. Initially unable to identify parish register for the marriage, however searched for Samuel Lacey and identified the marriage (incorrectly transcribed as Sarah Rowdell).[41]

Identified Sarah Lacey in 1851 England census in Crewkerne, born abt 1817 in Broadwindsor without Samuel, but with children Chas, Mary and Saml. Searched for baptisms of these children and identified Charles Lacey baptised 27 Jan 1839, Mary Ann 24 Sep 1843, Samuel 21 Jan 1847 (father occupation late Hostler at the George Inn). This tied in with Sarah listed as widow indicates that Samuel passed away before Jan 1847. Also identified baptism for George baptised 31 Jan 1841, buried 18 Dec 1845.[42][43][44][45][46]

Searched for Sarah Lacey in the 1841 census and not able to locate. However, identified an Ann Lacey born abt 1816, with children Charles and George, which ties in with children born to this date. So suggest this is Sarah (maybe going by a middle name?). Again no Samuel at home.[47]

Identified Sarah and daughter Mary Ann in 1861, in Crewkerne.[48]

Possibly entry for Sarah in 1871 census, different birth location but she may not have been the informant and person made assumptions on birth location.[49]

Identified Sarah Lacey back with her two youngest children Marian (Mary Ann) and Samuel, in London in the 1881 Census.[50]

Unable to identify Sarah in the 1891 census therefore suspect she passed away between 1881 and 1891, possibly in London.

Identified marriage of Henry Rowswell to Sarah Shackelle on 16 June 1839 at North Perrott, Somerset. Henry's father is listed as Willm [William] Rowswell.[53]

Identified Henry Rousell and family in 1861 Census however wife listed as Mary not Sarah but still born in North Perrott. Suspect this person may have been listed incorrectly as Henry listed with Sarah (born in North Perrott) again in 1871 census.[56]

Identified Henry Rowsell as father-in-law in Bridport Dorset in 1891 Census. Suspect wife Sarah has passed away between 1881 and 1891. From relationship, Sarah A Richards, wife of George is Henry's daughter.[59]

All children born in Haslebury, Somerset with parents Henry and Sarah. Children are Sarah Anne Rowsell baptised 30 May 1841, Mary Jane Rowsell 25 Aug 1844, Selina Rousell 24 Apr 1847, Edith Rowsell 16 May 1849 and Henry George Rousell 30 Nov 1856.[60][61][62][63][64]

Searched North Perrott, Somerset burial register, page by page, between 1830 and 1880 for death of Edith Rowsell. Nothing found.

Searched Broadwindsor, Dorset burial register, page by page, between 1824 and 1835 for death of Edith Rowsell. Nothing found.

George

As stated above, identified baptism record for George in 1821 in Broadwindsor, Dorset. Subsequently identified George (his parents and siblings) being removed from Broadwindsor to North Perrot, Somerset in 1831 when he was aged 13 years.[65]

Entry in "Dorset, England, Dorchester Prison Admission and Discharge Registers, 1782-1901" for Geo Rowsell, age 20, committal date 17 May 1841, when bought to prison 17 May 1841, parish North Perrott, Somerset, trade labourer, single, committed by S Cox Esq, crime deserter from the 32nd Foot, stature 5ft 8", hair dark brown, eyes light grey, complexion fair, event of trial taken off by route to Portsmouth, behaviour in prison orderly, when discharged 11 June 1841, instructiuon N [No] Church, remarks rec't for body on back of warrant.[66]

With the above entry in mind, the George in prison in Dorset for the 1841 census must be this Geroge. 1841 Census for George Rowsell, age 20, Prisoner Soldier, born in county No, Dorset County Gaol & House of Correction, St Peter, Dorset.[67]

Elizabeth

Identified marriage for Robert Slade and Elizabeth Rouswell on 4 August 1849 in North Perrot, Somerset, England. The marriage list Elizabeth's father as Wm Rouswell a labourer.[68]

Identified entry for Elizabeth Slade in North Perrott, Somerset, born abt 1831 in Broadwindsor, Dorset, with husband Robert and son Thomas. Also Elizabeth's parents are listed on the same page of the census in the household above.[69]

Identified two deaths that may be for Elizabeth.

Suspect first death would match Elizabeth due to her baptism in Aug 1830. However, both are a possibility.

Different birth locations listed however locations within the Taunton area so suspect these are the same person. If so, this is not the George that emigrated to Australia.

Possible burial entry for this George. Burial in the same location as he was living in the 1871 census, although age is a little out (born 1824 vs 1819). Needs further investigation. Burial for George Rowsell on 23 Mar 1877 in Taunton, St. Mary, Somerset. The death registration for this burial is George Rowsell, death Mar 1877, age 53, Taunton, 5c, 293.[77]

George born Yeovil, Somerset 1824

Identified non-confirmist baptism (and birth) for William and George Rowsell (twins), parents Charles and Mary Rowsell, in Yeovil, Somerset.[78] Could this be the birth for one of the other George's identified above? (Possibly Somerset 1826?). Also identified a baptism for John Grant Rowell, born on 16 Nov 1828, baptised 21 December 1828, in Yeovil, Somerset.

Searched for George and/or his parents in the 1841 and 1851 Census. Identified a Charles and Mary Rowsel in Lopen and South Petherton, Somerset respectively. Additional research identified Church of England baptisms for the children listed in the 1841 census without the mention of William, George or John. Also the births/baptisms are too close together to be family. Therefore, suggest these are not the correct family for the George baptised non-conformist.[79][80]

Searched for John Rowsell (George's younger brother) in 1841 census. Identified entry for family in Yeovil, Mary, Wm (William) and John. Did Charles and George pass away prior to the Census or are they elsewhere? Needs further investigation.[81] 1851 census.[82] Possible death of Charles Rowsell (father) in Mar 1838, Yeovil, 10, 461.

Identified a George Rowsell, aged 25, Baker, born in Bridport with wife Emma in the 1851 Census.[83]

Unable to identify George in any other England census.

Identified a crew list that was attached to George Rousell (who died in Forbes, New South Wales) in one of the Ancestry trees. This George was 32 years old in 1864 (born abt 1830), born in Bridport, Dorset who was operating out of Weymouth on the vessel Geraldine.[84] Further investigation required to confirm.

Confirmed that this is not George's father George as he has been identified in the 1871 census. Searched Burial register for Crewkerne, Somerset in 1851 does not contain a burial for George Rowswell, so may not be this George's death. Needs further investigation.

Identified George's father George in the 1842 Pigot's directory for Crewkerne as a Book & shoemaker on East Street.[88] And in the 1830 Pigot's directory.[89]

1841 Census for George Rowswell in Shepton Beauchamp, born about 1833 in Somerset, his suspected parents John (32) and Susan (30), and younger brother Thomas (7).[92] Identified the same George born about 1831 in Shepton Beauchamp, Somerset, still with parents John and Susan in 1851 census.[93] Unable to identify George or his parents in any later census. Identified Thomas, Geroge's younger brother in later census'. Did they all pass away before 1861, or did they emigrate?

Baptism of George Rowsell "illegitimate child of" Hester a servant, on 19 Sep 1824 in Chilcombe, Dorset. Chilcombe is about 8 km from Bridport. Therefore could this be the baptism for George born in Bridport in about 1826?[101]

Parkstone is an area of Poole, Dorsest, England. Identified a baptism for George Rowsall, baptised on 29 May 1824, in Poole, Dorset, England, parents James + Hannah, abode Parkstone, father's occupation Cooper.[102]

Searched for siblings of George and identified Samuel baptised 15 Nov 1822 and Thomas baptised 20 Aug 1826.[103][104]

Identified George with his parents in 1841 England Census with sibling Thomas, and additional suspected siblings Mary and James. Geroge's occupation is listed as Shoe Maker Journeyman.[105]

Identified George Rowsell in 1851 Census, born in Parkstone, Dorset, age 27, married?, is listed as a Lodger in Pool St James, an Ag Labourer. This entry does have come conflicting information, it indicates that George is married however he does not marry until December 1851 (see below). A closer look at who George is lodging with, identifies his future wife Susannah Barnes, aged 32, unmarried ![106]

Identified George Rowsell a stone mason journeyman in Taunton St James, Somerset, born about 1829 in Taunton, Somerset in the 1851 Census. He is on the same page as a Susan Adams, who is most likely the Susan that become his wife.[125]
