Welcome to the Gilbert and Sullivan Challenge!

The theatrical works of dramatist W. S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan have enjoyed broad international success for more than a century. Their creative partnership began in 1871 and produced 14 comic operas over a 25 year period, with H.M.S. Pinafore (1878), The Pirates of Penzance (1879) and The Mikado (1885) among their most popular works.

The Gilbert and Sullivan Challenge aims to create, source and connect WikiTree profiles for performers who stepped onto the stage in The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. Our casts are mostly chosen from the London and New York debuts of each opera, and also include the creative duo W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

To join the fun, simply follow the steps below.

How to join

1. Choose an opera and cast member
  • Pick a comic operaβ€”either The Pirates of Penzance or The Mikado. Their casts are listed below.
  • Add your name next to the cast member(s) you plan to work on. To add your name, click the "edit" tab of this page and insert your name in the following format: [[WikiID-123|Your Name]]
  • Up to 3 people can work on each cast member, so put your name down before you miss out!
  • You can work on as many cast members as you like.
2. Create, source and connect the cast member's WikiTree profile
  • Check if the cast member has a WikiTree profile. If not, create one! Some cast members performed under stage names, so confirm you have the correct LNAB before creating profiles.
  • Source the profile with reliable sources. All the cast members have biographies in the Gilbert and Sullivan Archive and many are on Wikipedia, so that might be a good place to start!
  • Connect the cast member to the global tree. You will know they are connected if you link them to a profile that's got "... is 23 degrees from ..., 21 degrees from ... and 17 degrees from ... on our single family tree ..." at the bottom. If you're new to connecting, read Fran's 'Connecting How-To' Guide. It's got lots of pictures and screen shots to help you learn.
  • Don't feel you need to do everything yourself. It's all about teamwork!
3. When you finish the cast member
  • Once you've sourced, written at least a basic biography, and connected the profile to the global tree, update this page to show it's done.
  • Do this by clicking the "edit" tab of this page and adding the following at the end of the cast member's status: ~~~~ 🎡
Click "save changes" and it will automatically add your name, the date and time.
4. Winning team
  • The winner will be the team that finishes all the cast members of their opera first, or that has finished the most at the end of the challenge.
  • All participants will receive a participant's sticker to add to their own profile!
    Participants' sticker
5. Questions and updates
  • We will be using Google Groups and the "project-challenges" channel on Discord for questions, updates and to encourage each other.

The casts

The Pirates of Penzance, The Mikado and other Gilbert and Sullivan operas were first performed by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, a professional light opera company established in the 1870s. You can find information about performers from the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in the Gilbert and Sullivan Archive.

This has been a fascinating experience and a trip down memory lane. Because my Dad introduced us to opera and music my sister and I had piano lessons and our teacher was friendly at the time with one of the conductors with the Rioyal Opeera House who performed Iolanthe at the Theatre Royal, Nottingham we got to go backstage and got autographs of Heather Begg and Derek Hammond Stroud. Dad bought some libretti of several of the operettas, so we would act out and sing all the parts we could. Rosie, my sister is much more of a singer than me but good memories whatever.
.
This is the very essence of an England competition
with Chinese interspersions for your expedition
Sing pirate songs to help you, inter alia
and raise your spirts in this little cornucopia
But though the the pleasure will be quite ephemeral
there are Rozzers and a modern Major-General
there’s marriage on the menu for a certain little fillia
(the latin wont escape you because you have great scientia)

The audience is hushed. Sir I Speed raises his baton and the overture begins. Dave provides a roll of the drums and we are off!
