John Samuel Gilpin Research Notes
John Samuel Gilpin (1854-) is believed to have been married twice. First, to Matilda Jane Taylor, and second to Julia Hutchinson. A third marriage has been found for a Malinda Walters.

- I was told that Malinda died when Thomas was about 12 years old in Smyth County, Virginia. I have not been able to find a death record or cemetery record for her.
- John Samuel Gilpin then married Julia Hutchinson. Julia's father Peter Duncan Hutchinson. I was to point out some family relationships with Peter. I first saw Peter in Civil War records with Jarrett Francis Rigg. I next saw that his 2nd marriage was to the daughter of Jarrett Francis Rigg, Mary Jane Rigg.

- Birth and death record for their son, Thomas Walter Gilpin, born 1875 and died in 1960, in Logan West Virginia. The birth record gives her name as Malinda J, no last name. The death record gives her name as Jane Taylor.
- death record for a daughter, Isabelle Alice Gilpin, born 1883 and died 1883, in Summers County, West Virginia gives Malinda Gilpin as the mother.

While searching for sources for his first marriage, I came across a possible 3rd (but second in succession) marriage in 1888 to a Malinda Walters (married name was Terry, widowed). - If this is correct, they had at least one child: Janie Elizabeth [3]
While searching for sources for his first marriage, it became clear there is a possible second John Gilpin and family. Crawford-15512 12:57, 29 April 2022 (UTC) [4] This does not belong to the family I'm researching.
Thomas Walter Gilpin Research
While searching through records for the father, I came across a birth record for a Thomas Gilpin, born in Rich Valley, Smyth, Virginia on 7 Mar 1876 to a John S. Gilpin and mother named Jane.[5]This does not belong to the family I'm researching.
A marriage record for a T W Gilpin and Sarah Damron was also found, giving J.S Gilpin and Jane Taylor as parents.[6] Sarah's Last Name at Birth would therefore be Jude, and Damron was her married name.
A Draft Registration dated 1917/1918 in Logan, West Virginia was found. It gives his date of birth as 30 October 1875.[7] Other information from the record image: Age 42 at time of Draft; Present Occupation: Miner; Employer: H. S. Gay; Nearest Relative: Jennie Gilpin; Description: Tall, slender, brown eyes, brown hair.
A death record for a Thomas Walter Gilpin, died 6 May 1960, in Logan, West Virginia was found.[8] This record gives parents John Gilpin and Jane Taylor and gives Thomas's occupation as a retired miner and minister.
Sorting out the Census Data
1900 Census for Union District, Wayne, West Virginia shows a Thomas, age 25, a wife named Jennie, age 23 and a son, Samuel, age 3. Birth date was given as Oct 1875, in Virginia. Marriage date was estimated as 1897. His occupation is also listed as farmer. It lists the birth place of both parents as being in Virginia.
There is a second entry in the 1900 Census for Union District, Wayne, West Virginia that shows a Thomas Gilpon, age 24, born in Virginia, a wife named Jennie, age 22, a son named Samuel, age 3, and a son named Elendis, a newborn. Birth date was given as Oct 1876. Estimated year of marriage was 1896. His occupation is listed as a farmer. It lists the birth place of both his parents as being in Virginia. - This does not belong to the family I am researching.
1910 Census for Logan, West Virginia, Sheet A, #40 shows a Thomas Gilpin, age 32, married, born about 1878 in Virginia; wife Jennie, age 30, son Samuel, age 13, son Alondas, age 11, daughter Essie, age 6 ad son William, age 3.
1920 Census for Logan, West Virginia, Sheet B, #8 shows a Thomas Gilpin, age 44, married, born about 1876 in Virginia; wife Jennie, age 42; son Samuel, age 22, son Elonidost, age 19, daughter Essie, age 16, son Willie, age 13, daughter Frances, age 10, son Earl, age 7, son Walter, age 4 and daughter Dorothy, age 1.
1930 Census for Logan, Nebraska shows a Thomas W Gilpin, age 53, born in Virginia; married, estimated birth year 1877; wife Jennie, age 51; daughter Esshe Tabor, age 25; Walker Tabor, son in law, age 31; son Francis, age 19; son Earl, age 16, son Walter, age 14, daughter Dorothy, age 11, and son Thomas Gilpin, Jr., age 8
1940 Census for Logan, West Virginia shows a (T.W or J.W) Gilpin, age 64, wife, Jennie, age 61, son Thomas (absent), age 24, step-mother, Julia, age 65, neice, Edith Marie, age 6.[9]
