Origin of the Ginman Surname
It's unclear at this stage where and why the Ginman surname originated. The surname seems to be most prevalent in Finland. Are the England and Finnish Ginman's connected?
Potential Spelling Variations
Jinman, Genman, Jenman
England
The earliest known Ginman families appear to be from Kent, Sussex and London. The earliest known Ginman record found is for a Tomsen Ginman, who married John Walter in Kent, England on June 13, 1575.
An Ancestry search of the Ginman surname in the 1881 England Census returns 57 people. Findmypast returned 54. Given the surname has been around so long, it's a little surprising that so few Ginman's were found in this census.
Australia
The earliest known Ginman in Australia is William Ginman, who married an Elizabeth Watson in Geelong, Victoria in 1840.
United States
It's unclear when the first Ginman's arrived in the US. The 1830 census lists perhaps two Ginman families. The 1860 census has an Ada Ginman, born in New York in 1820.
