The goal of this project is to list the Magill families that have left the Glens of Antrim to other parts of the world.

This is a sub-project of McGill Name Study

Right now this project just has one member, me. I am John McGill.

Introduction

There are several known Magill/McGill families in the US, Canada, Australia and New Zealand that came from the Glens of Antrim. Some some of these were discovered via DNA matches. The data show several interesting patterns, including immigration year, rural vs. urban settlement, settling near other families from the Glens and religious denominations.

Looking at the dates of immigration, we can see that there was a small wave of immigration around 1825. We then see a larger wave in the famine years of approximately 1847 to 1855. There is then a trickle of immigration through the late nineteenth century. Immigration picks up from around 1910 through the 1930's.

Initial immigrants in the 1800's settled in rural areas. Later immigrants were more likely to settle in urban areas.

Another phenomenon is that Magill's of the Glens tended to settle near other families from the Glens. For example, 1850, 1860 and 1870 census records of Lake County, Illinois show neighbors named Tweed, Darragh and McGavock, which are all common surnames in the Glens. These same surnames show up as baptism and marriage sponsors of each other in church records in their new home.

The surname was typically spelled Magill in the Glens of Antrim. Many of the families changed the spelling to McGill in the US.

The Manitoba immigrants were Presbyterian. The Abbeville immigrants were Associate Reformed Presbyterians. The Kilwaughter familly was Non-subscribing Presbyterian/Unitarian. The remaining families were Roman Catholic.

Descendants of the Carncastle Magill immigrants report autosomal DNA matches with Argentiuel, Manitoba, Abbeville, Jackson County and Passaic County Magill descendants.

Argenteiul, Quebec McGill Family

Andrew McGill (abt.1795-bef.1851) and his wife Ellen McMonagle (abt.1796-abt.1870) immigrated to Quebec in about 1825. Their son Hughie McGill (1830-1899) was born in Canada. There are no known Irish records proving they were from the Glenarm area.

Descendants of this family have autosomal DNA matches with the descendants of the Carncastle/Lake County Magills.

Hawkesbury, Ontario McGill Family

John McGill (abt.1812-1882) and Mary (Glass) McGill (abt.1821-) settled in Ontario, Canada in approximately 1847.

East Hawkesbury, Ontario is just across the Ottowa river from Grenville, Quebec. One might presume that these two families were related and possible remained in contact in the new world.

Manitoba McGill Family

William John McGill (abt.1845-1927) and Julia Dornan (abt.1841-1929) immigrated in 1882.

Descendants of this family have autosomal DNA matches with the descendants of the Carncastle/Lake County Magills.

Lake Co., IL and Cuming Co., NE Family (Carncastle)

John Magill (abt.1818-1891) and Nancy (Hall) Magill (abt.1818-1859) left Ireland in approximately 1847. He appears in the 1850, 1860 and 1870 US Census records in Lake County, IL. After Nancy's death, John married Mary (Keefe) McGill (abt.1841-1889) in 1861.

John's brothers Hugh Magill (1830-1894) and Patrick Magill (1836-1880) had joined him in Lake County by the 1870 Census. Hugh actually appears in the 1870 Census in both Lake Co., IL and Cuming Co., NE indicating that he moved to Nebraska that year. Hugh served in the Civil War and likely lived near Albany, NY before coming to Lake Co., IL. John's family had moved to Cuming Co. by the 1880 Census.

Patrick's family stayed in Illinois.

These Magills were originally from Corkermain Townland, Carncastle Civil Parish.

Prominent members of this family include Patrick Joseph McGill (1896-1969), a professional wrestler in the 1920's and 30's. Francis William Leahy (1908-1973), legendary football coach of Notre Dame is a cousin of this family.

Abbeville Co., SC

James William Magill (1797-abt.1853) and Margaret (McFall) Magill (abt.1799-1877) sailed to Charleston, SC in 1842 and settled in Abbeville County, SC . The family is featured in the publication The Tucker Band:Tuckers and Related Families (Burtons and Magills)) Compiled by Harold Lawrence. Boyd Publishing Company, 1992.

Descendants of this family have autosomal DNA matches with the descendants of the Carncastle/Lake County Magills.

Prominent members of this family include John Henry Magill (1848-1923), cofounder and editor of The Hartwell Sun newspaper in Hartwell, GA and David Haddon Magill (1857-1926), attorney in Greenwood, SC and member of South Carolina Legislature from 1892-1898.

John Magill (abt.1818-1842) is buried in Abbeville Co. and may be another child of James William Magill and Margaret McFall. (Or he could be the "Uncle John" referred to below). He married Jane Robinson (abt.1820-abt.1854) and had one son John T. Magill (abt.1843-1850).

Page 267 of The Tucker Band describes "Uncle John MaGill came to the United States and settled in Charleston, SC. He married a Charleston lady...during the crossing of the family (1842) to the United States Uncle John took suddenly ill and died." Records of this Magill have not yet been found.

William Magill (abt.1821-abt.1908) lived in Abbeville. He left Ireland around 1838. He married Margaret (Robinson) Magill (aft.1842-bef.1880) in 1854. His descendant has a DNA match to a Carncastle Magill descendant.

John E. Magill (abt.1824-1900) is another Magill from Larne who spent time in Abbeville, Co and moved on to Mississipi.

There is a different John Magill (abt.1841-1914) who lived in Charleston and came from Larne in 1865. See the Kilwaughter/Larne section below.

There were other Magill families that arrived in Abbeville County in the late 1700s. It is unknown whether they are related to the above Magill family.

Jackson Co., MI

There were three McGill families in Jackson Co., Michigan in the mid to late 1800s. Two of these families are from the Glens. The origin of the 3rd McGill family is unknown.

William McGill (abt.1828-1909) and Cecilia McQuillan (abt.1832-1924) immigrated in about 1852. His parents William McGill (abt.1802-bef.1880) and Jane (Davison) McGill (abt.1802-abt.1880) are believed to have immigrated to the US. William, Jr. had a brother John McGill (abt.1830-1900) who settled in Hartford, CT. He had at least 3 other sibblings, James, Elizabeth and Margaret whose statuses are unknown.

Charles Hector McGill (1857-1943) and Rosena (McQuillan) McGill (1863-1928) settled in Jackson County in 1880.

Descendants of Charles Hector Magill have autosomal DNA matches with the descendants of the Carncastle/Lake County Magills.

Verona, ND

Roland Magill (abt.1859-1939) and Mary Magill (abt.1860-abt.1895) were married in 1881 and immigrated to the US in 1882. He was from Kilnacolpaugh Townland. Mary was from Four Score Acres Townland.

Roland's sister Rose (Magill) McCann (1851-1921) and her husband Edward McCann came to Verona, ND in 1883.

New Jersey

Patrick McGill (abt.1800-1855) and Rose McQuillan (abt.1800-) settled in Paterson, Passaic county, NJ in 1847.

Brothers Hugh Magill (abt.1841-1926) and Daniel Magill (abt.1849-1915) settled near Tenafly, Bergen county, NJ.

New Zealand and Australia

Daniel Magill (1869-1948) and his wife Sarah (McAlister) Magill (abt.1890-1969) moved to New Zealand in 1924. They had 3 boys. 2 of them became Catholic priests. Dan was from Aughaboy townland and was part of the "Mor Magill" family.

Brothers Thomas, Patrick and Henry Magill from Unchenagh townland moved to New Zealand in the late 1800s.

Kilwaughter/Larne Magill

The family of Thomas Magill (abt.1803-1879) and Mary (Nelson) Magill (-1866) had several members leave Ireland. Ivan Whiteside Magill (1888-1986) was a pioneering anesthesiologist in London. John Magill (abt.1841-1914) went to Charleston, SC. Robert Haddon Common (abt.1907-1986) is a great grandson of Thomas Magill and was a professor of Agriculture in Canada. Several children of Hugh Magill (abt.1848-1925) went to Canada, including Robert Magill (abt.1877-1958) and Samuel Magill (abt.1885-1925) and Thomas Hugh Magill (1880-). Lizzie Magill (1888-abt.1981) went to York, Ontario.
