Glenwright Name Study - Migrants to Cumberland

This profile is part of the Glenwright Name Study.

These Glenwright families migrated across the Thirlwall Gap (719', the route of the A69) or the Nenthead Pass (2043', now the route of the A689) to Cumberland:

  • John Glenwright, migrated 1788 or 1789 relocated in Holme Head in the western part of Haltwhistle to Lanercost, a distance of less than 7 miles just across the Thirlwall Gap. He moved shortly after marrying his second wife Elizabeth Laidler in November 1788 and before the birth of her first son Joseph in June 1789.
Most of John's children continued to migrate downriver to the Carlisle area and Wigton. However his second son, John Daniel (a/k/a Daniel) Glenwright was among the first 1820 British colonists of Capetown, South Africa and the ancestor of all Glenwrights in colonial South Africa.
A grandson, John Glenwright enigrated to Rhode Island, USA and a granddaughter, Jane (Glenwright) Carruthers emigrated to Cortland County, New York, USA.
